Reading Strategy – page 50 How to Identify Events in the Plot• The order of events in a story is the plot.

In many stories, the first event begins with a problem that the main character has. Each following event in the story carries the plot to it’s conclusion, or end. If you understand the plot, you know the beginning, the middle and the end of a story.

Reading Strategy – How to Identify Events in the Plot

As you read, ask yourself:

1. Who is the main character?

2. What is the character’s problem?

3. What events lead to the conclusion of the story?

planet Zaxton are lonely and want to meet some new people. One day Loomie, the queen on Zaxton, looks through a telescope and sees people on the planet Meepar. She wants them to come and live on Zaxton.

A independent clause has a subject and a verb. It can stand alone as a sentence. When you join two independent clauses, you make a compound sentence.

Some conjunctions used in compound sentences (from Handbook, pg. 430):

Grammar Mini-Lesson: Subject-Verb Agreement

The verb in a sentence must agree with its subject. Singular means “one.” A singular subject names one person and needs a singular verb.

Plural means “more than one.” A plural subject names more than one person and needs a plural verb. -see Handbook pg. 427 for more info.
