For example in the movie Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. So we are just going to try and get rid of some of those misconceptions.

Dissociative DisorderIt is the breakdown of ones perception of higher surrounding, memory, identity, or consciousness GeneticFound more frequently in women than in menUsed to be considered demonic possessionhttp://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.billfrymire.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/dna-strand-code.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.billfrymire.com/blog/2008/04/&usg=__kpORotjp7yJZ8tcnF00FNd286mk=&h=751&w=1000&sz=123&hl=en&start=219&zoom=1&tbnid=0oQLfb2gBQZgXM:&tbnh=132&tbnw=176&prev=/images%3Fq%3DDNA%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7GGLJ_en%26biw%3D1003%26bih%3D597%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C6557&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=275&vpy=283&dur=1266&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=119&ty=138&ei=ELsCTfvONsPFswaf2ZnlCQ&oei=47oCTcqTCMH78Ab2i8XoAg&esq=14&page=15&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:219&biw=1003&bih=597http://www.athealth.com/Consumer/disorders/Dissociative.htmlFour TypesDissociative Identity Disorder (DID)a.k.a multiple personality disorderDissociative AmnesiaDissociative FugueDepersonalization Disorderhttp://allpsych.com/disorders/dissociative/index.html

One common symptom is memory loss of specific time periods as well as people and events. Another common symptom is general mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Many people with dissociative disorders experience depersonalization. Which means theyfeel as if they are detached from themself. Another common symptom is derealization. This means that they perceive people and objects around them as unreal or distorted. The last major common symptom is a blurred sense of reality. a.k.a Multiple Personality Disorder

Some people feel the presence of one person or many people talking or living in their head. Each of these people living in their head may have a distinct history, characteristics, voice, manner, name etc. Each of the personalities is very different. And each identity takes control at a different time. In some cases the person is consciously aware of the other identities but some people are not. People with this disorder often have dissociative amnesia as well. The mental status of a person with DID is usually alert and oriented but with limited relatedness. The person is often in an anxious and irritable mood and they try to make minimal eye contact. They often have poor insight, reasoning, judgment and long term memory. Their orientation can be off and they have increased suicidal and homicidal thoughts. A person can also be fixed on external or internal stimuli. Their thoughts can often be characterized by hyper vigilance, preoccupations and hallucinations.

This memory loss cant be explained physically or neurologically. With this disorder traumatic times and events from your life seem to simply go missing, especially from childhood. So basically you have memory gaps but they are too wide to be considered normal. Again the mental status of these people are alert and oriented but lacking in reasoning and judgment. A person with this disorder also uses limited eye contact. Their speech is slow but it is very logical and they have limited attention and concentration. Their recent memory is a little impaired but their remote memory is fine. People with dissociative amnesia are often anxious. These people also have an increased liklihood suicidal, violent and even homicidal thoughts. This is usually due to the severe frustration of dissociation.TreatmentsMedication PentothalHypnosisPsychotherapyhttp://www.rxlist.com/pentothal-drug.htmhttp://www.psychnet-uk.com/dsm_iv/dissociative_amnesia.htm

For example they may abruptly leave home or work and travel away forgetting who they are and might adopt a new identity in a new location. They are capable of blending into their new location. These episodes can last varying lengths of times: for as little as a couple of hours or as long as a few months. These episodes end and begin very abruptly. At the end of these episodes the person often feels extremely disoriented, depressed and angry but they have no recollection of what happened.
