About Distance Learning
• Rio Salado College Incarcerated Re-Entry Distance
Learning (IRE DL) provides a paper based education
opportunity for incarcerated students.
• Students may be housed in a state or federal correctional
system, juvenile detention, a state hospital or in a residential
treatment center.
Our Mission
• Rio Salado College Distance Learning program is in alignment with the
Maricopa Community College District (MCCCD), Rio Salado College (RSC),
student completion agenda.
• Directly tied into the Department of Corrections (DOC) and Governor Doug
Ducey’s goal to reduce recidivism and reverse the growth of Arizona’s
prison population.

• To collaborate with the correctional system and the agencies and employers
working with re-entry and incarcerated individuals.
Print Based Learning Criteria
Rio Salado College Incarcerated Re-Entry Distance Learning follows
state or federal correctional system, juvenile detention, a state hospital
or residential treatment center policy regarding education.
Arizona Department of Corrections DO910 Education Criteria:
• High School diploma/GED and passed mandatory literacy
• Not have a major ticket within six months of the scholarship
evaluation date
• Not be in a special unit such as detention or in lockdown
• Approval from Correction Education Program Manager (CEPM) or
Correction Education Program Supervisor (CEPS)

Choosing a program of study
1. Time to release:
Is there time to earn a Rio Salado College Certificate of
Completion?
2. Academic history (we accept unofficial transcripts for program
pathway evaluation)
3. Availability of funds that can support more than one class a
semester
4. Possibly conviction example: drug crime, Addictions and Substance
Use Disorder
Scholarship Criteria
• DOC may recommend students
• Rio Salado DL Team reviews academic history and verify program of study based on time to release,
previous course history and funding sources
Student commit to Distance Learning Pathway and not change distance learning pathway
• All Certificates lead to Associate Degree
• Distance Learning as Path to Work and Strengthen Resume
• Food Service or industry: QCS or SBS
• Peer Mentoring Interest: WFR or ASD program
Priority Students:
• Recent GED completers
• Involved with community betterment programs at the prison i.e. peer mentor, teacher aid etc.
• Taking more than one class
• "A" or above
