Diagnostic Spelling Test – Nonwords (DiSTn) - November 2017 Page 1 of 20 General Information The Diagnostic Spelling Test – Nonwords (DiSTn) tests a person’s knowledge of English sound-letter-rules, also known as phoneme-grapheme-correspondences (PGCs). Proficient spellers use two key processes: translating sounds to letters using sound-letter-rules and their knowledge of spellings of whole words. The DiSTn evaluates which sound-letter-rules a person can apply when spelling made-up words (nonwords). The DiSTn is composed of 74 items (ie., nonwords) which assess the knowledge of over 40 sound-letter-rules. The tester says the nonwords and the speller tries to spell the nonwords as accurately as possible. A detailed analysis allows the tester to assess which of the 40 sound-letter-rules a person can apply in the spelling of nonwords. This test can be administered to a group or individual students. At the end of the test, the tester gets an overview of which sound-letter-rules the speller knows. The tester may then decide to train the rules that the speller does not know yet. The speller’s whole nonword accuracy score can be compared with that of individuals in the same year (grade) as the speller. The comparison gives an indication of a child’s nonword word spelling accuracy relative to spellers who have received similar amounts of instruction. Two kinds of norms are provided: 1) Norms where no stopping rule is applied (ie., the child was administered all test items) 2) Norms where a stopping rule was applied (ie., testing was discontinued after 5 consecutive errors) If you want to cite this test, please do so as follows: Kohnen, S., Colenbrander, D., Krajenbrink, T., & Nickels, L.
