The elecTrolAB emS-8 is a microcontroller based elec-tromagnetic sieve shaker. The movement produced is tri-dimensional, combining a ver-tical movement with a rotation of the material to be sifted on the surface of the sieve. The instrument is powered by an electromagnetic drive which has no rotating parts, making it maintenance free and extremely quiet in operation. The vibratory action produced by the power unit moves the sample all over the sieve in a unique way producing faster, more efficient sieving, while the rapid vertical movements also help to keep the aper-tures free from blocking. The emS-8 is very suitable for sieving of high density prod-ucts and for dry and wet siev-ing analysis. The unit has been designed for user friendly operation and sup-ports a menu driven 16 x 2 character lcD display. The unit is compact, portable and is robustly built and can be used in laboratories or at site.

The emS-8 is ideally used as a particle profile / size analyzer for the pharmaceuti-cal and chemical industries by governing the separation of particles according to their sizes. Particle size is one of

The Schott Karl Fischer titrator combines ease use and maximum accuracy for the daily laboratory routines. Its robustness is beneficial for the corrosive laboratory environment which outweighs the cost of the instrument. It is equipped with a uV-protected precision DuRAN glass cylinder and a motor-controlled 3/2 – way valve made of extremely resistant PTFe/eFTe.

Water and humidity is determined using Volumetric or Coulometric methods. The Schott Titroline KF is already programmed with suitable methods to determine sample titration, titre water, titre liquid standard, titre tartrate dehydrate, blank value and blank value solvent. All the methods are preset with the most commonly used parameters as well as with an option to change the parameters to cater for the individual laboratory needs. Thus when choosing the method, the correct formula is automatically selected and pre-assigned with the corresponding values.

The Titroline KF has an RS-232C interface and a uSB-port which allows you to connect a balance for automatic transfer of weighing data and connect a printer at the same time. It is also possible to connect a PC via the additional uSB-port. Both the Coloumetric and Volumetric can easily be controlled by the “KF-Soft” software that allows an easy transfer of the data and titration curve on a PC and store it in the integrated database.

R&D and testing laboratories in the petrochemical industry often deal with non-aqueous fluids that usually are difficult to aspirate and dispense correctly with regular air-displacement pipettes. RAININ, a leader in manual liquid handling, developed the Pos-D, one the first positive displacement pipettes with ergonomic

features which is ideal for liquids with high densities, viscosities or vapour pressures.

Conventional air-displacement pipettes are not suitable for viscous, dense, or high vapor pressure solutions, as the necessary pressure equalisation within the pipette tip does not completely occur. A viscous sample, for example,

will tend to adhere to the tip wall, and possibly allow air to be aspirated. A volatile liquid will evaporate, increasing the gas pressure in the tip above the sample, forcing some of the sample out of the tip. In these cases, sampling will be neither accurate nor precise and results will be compromised.

Precise testing of oils, fuels,

Pipetting of non-aqueous fluids

Schott titroline Karl Fischer

or lubricants is crucial in R&D and quality testing alike. like in any other laboratory, inaccuracies due to improper equipment cannot be accepted. With the RAININ Pos-D, precision and accuracy are assured even with these problematic liquids.

RAININ Pos-D is especially suited for liquids encountered in the petrochemical industry. The disposable piston, moving within a plastic capillary, makes direct

contact with the liquid. The positive wiping of the piston against the capillary wall ensures complete dispensing without droplets and protects samples from instrument contamination.

THe analysis of pesticides is relevant to both food quality and the environment. There is an increasing requirement for laboratories to monitor the levels of these compounds in food and other natural resources. Gas chromatography is the technique most widely used in the analysis of pesticides. In present laboratory practice it serves as a screening method for over 800 pesticides.

under eu legislation, the maximum residue limits (mrls) specified for pesticides are considered a potential health risk and laboratories are responsible for developing new, multi-residue analytical methods for specific classes of pesticides and their metabolites in foods and feeds. The analytical challenge is to gather more pesticide residue data, keep run times short and to achieve lower limits of detection (loDs).

multi-residue methods (mrm) are efficient for analysis of pesticide residues and fully comply to the conditions set forth by legislative bodies. For methods with a very wide scope, generic sample preparation procedures may be employed but the clean-up of extracts is limited, particularly when applied to complex food matrices, such as baby food, garlic, ginger, herbs, spices and

tobacco. To achieve enhanced selectivity in complex matrices, the analytical method of using gas chromatography (GC) with tandem quadrupole mass spectrometric detection (GC/mS/mS) provides a system capable of efficient, accurate and precise measurement of concentrations of pesticides and their degradation products, and thus compensates for the low selectivity in sample preparation. by monitoring mrm transitions these systems provide a distictive advantage over conventional GC/mS techniques.

The Waters Quattro micro GC™ system offers a simple and generic, rapid extraction method, allowing recovery of multi classes of pesticides (oP, oC, pyrethroids) and can analyse 100 or more pesticides in one run. multiple compounds in a variety of matrices can be detected and loDs are achieved at, or lower than the reporting level. This selective mS detection method with its multi-residue analysis capability provides adequate sensitivity to keep the amount of matrix introduced into the system, as low as possible.

The Waters Quattro micro GC™ is a tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer recognized as the benchmark for accurate, reproducible trace-level quantitative analysis. Providing

Miniflash Touch

exceptional sensitivity, selectivity and dynamic range, this system is the preferred choice for environmental, toxicology, food/beverage, and other trace analysis where target compounds are present at low levels in often complex matrices.

QualITy assurance of petrochemical raw materials and products is crucial. In the petrochemical industry, an important parameter is to judge the quality of olefin containing organic material, by determining the bromine index.

mettler Toledo’s C30 coulometer, is a flexible and powerful instrument for analyzing a variety of samples in the petrochemical industry. using the clean and elegant method of Karl Fischer coulometric titration, the C30 offers a dedicated method for the fast and accurate determination of the bromine Index, according to the aSTm regulations. The method control is fast for high bromine Index values and cautious for small values. This allows accurate and reproducible determination of even low one-digit bromine Indices. The simple method allows determinations without much method development, as the predefined method template can be applied. The solvent is blanked out and subsequent samples analyzed, all with the same method.

Important quality criteria is to determine the degree of unsaturation of organic compounds as it influences

different specifications of the compound such as viscosity, boiling point or the polymerization characteristics. It defines its tendency to form harmful gums that can clog fuel ports and filters. bromine will react with double bonds under certain conditions. The more double bonds a molecule offers the more bromine is consumed in this reaction. The bromine number is the amount of bromine in grams absorbed by 100 grams of a sample. The number indicates the degree of unsaturation. The bromine number is determined by titration of the sample with a bromide-bromate (br-/bro3-) solution. For lower bromine consumption, the result is given as consumption of mg bromine per 100g sample, and called the bromine Index.

mettler Toledo’s C30 coulometric method specifies that the bromine is not added in solution with a burette, but instead, is generated directly in the titration vessel by a current, applied by an electrolysis cell. In this way, fewer chemicals need to be used, and the current generates bromine even more accurately than a typical burette could dose a solution. Typical industry samples are in

the bromine Index range of 2 to 50 for clean aromatic samples such as benzene, Toluene, or Xylene. raffinates, which are cracked hydrocarbons destined for gasoline, can be much higher, several hundred to several thousand.

The C30’s one Click™ user interface makes the operation of the instrument simple. To start a method, run a sample or exchange the solvent, only `one click’ is required. The clever design of the coulometric current electrolysis cell makes cleaning easy and offers high accuracy. In order to empty and refill the titration vessel, the Solvent manager is simply activated by the titrator, thus contact with chemicals is avoided.

Infinite Latitude with only one light source

Extreme flexibility with minimum workloadContrAA reduces the preparation phase of the measuring process to a minimum. With only one light source for all elements and all available wavelengths, the instrument is ready to measure at all times. The previous dependence of the measurement on hollow cathode lamps is eliminated

and the associated costly preparation time no longer applies. The protracted burn- in time of the light source, necessary for conventional line sources, is not required.

Expanded application spectrumThe use of a xenon lamp as a continuous source of radiation opens up the entire wavelength range relevant for AAS for the customer in just one step. Thus the sequential multi-element routine becomes standard in flame analysis. This provides enormous savings in time and cost of materials. The evaluation of molecular absorption bands, allowing the analysis of additional elements, is a further innovation.

Impressive design

Intelligent design means readiness to operate quickly, high effectiveness and easy handling as a means of minimizing service and operating costs. Operating convenience is a top priority for the ContrAA. Moreover the ContrAA 700 offers unique flexibility. Thanks to the tandem principle, it is readily possible to change quickly from flame technology and vice versa, with only one mouse click!
