VI. Classroom Policies▪ “Office” Hours: I will be available for student/teacher conferencing and parent/ teacher

conferencing after school and by phone/email. You must make an appointment in advance for any conferences. In the event that you have any questions or concerns you may always stop by after class if my door is open.

▪ Absences: Work missed because of an unexcused absence cannot be made up. Any assignments missed will earn a Z in the gradebook. In the case of an excused absence, you will have 48 hours for every excused absence to make up work for a full grade as long as you immediately bring a signed note to the office. It is your responsibility to request any missed work. It is also your responsibility to stamp your work as absent and turn it in the late bin. If you know in advance that you are going to be absent, please see me ASAP during my “office” hours or the last 5 minutes of class so we can set up a schedule for you to make up your missed work.

▪ Late Work: Late work is accepted and must be turned in within 1 day of the original deadline. It is your responsibility to complete assignments on time and turn them in when I ask for them. Any late work will only be accepted 1 day after the due date (not counting weekends) for nothing higher than a C. It will be your responsibility to stamp your work as late and place it in the late bin.

▪ Tardiness: If you are going to be late to class, you MUST go to the office and obtain a tardy slip. If you are late coming from another teacher’s class, you MUST bring a note from that teacher. If the tardy is unexcused, you will get a zero for the classwork missed. Excessive tardy will result in a detention.

▪ Classroom Materials: There are materials reserved specifically for your use in this classroom as well as materials reserved specifically for the teacher’s use. Please adhere to which of these items you are allowed to use openly and which you may not use without my permission. DO NOT remove any of the items from my classroom, doing so will be considered stealing. Because I provide these materials for you I expect you to use them in a mature manner. Any materials stolen or broken will not be replaced by myself.

▪  ▪ Class Library: I have a collection of literature in my classroom; you are

welcome to read any of these during free time in class or to borrow them for your own pleasure. To borrow a book you must use the check-out sheet, and renew or return the book directly to me within a month’s time.

-Over 300 books, most are ones I’ve read.-Don’t see one you were looking for? Tell me.

▪ Bathroom pass- I have 2 bathroom passes: one boys and one girls. They are hung by the door. You may go when needed, but do not abuse the privilege. Make sure I see you take the pass before walking out and sign out on the clipboard by the passes.

▪ ***if you abuse the privilege, it will be revoked.****

Syllabus Review

▪ Independent reading: We will be reading roughly 8 books throughout the year. It will be your responsibility to acquire the book and read it. A list of the novels we will be reading will be posted to my website within the month. A deadline will be given in which you must show proof of purchasing the book for a grade at the beginning of each book being assigned. There will be classwork/ homework attached to each book as well as a writing project and a creative interpretation project. These two projects will be worth a test grade each. A quiz will be given (possibly more than once) for each independent reading selection.

 ▪ Because of the number of students not reading the novels and simply googling them, etc. there is a

grading policy in effect. All projects will be due BEFORE the quiz will be given. You MUST pass the quiz in order for your projects to be graded. A failing grade on the quiz results in Z’s being given for the projects. If there are questions about this policy please contact me.

▪ Fancy Words: An extensive vocabulary is a mark of an educated man (and woman). We will be working with the Princeton Review top 100 SAT words list throughout the semester to improve our vocabulary. We will be using index cards to break down and learn these words, this will be done mostly through bell ringers and homework. We will be quizzed and tested on these words each semester.

Tic-Tac-Toe

My advice: Take notes.

These directions are very simple ones, I demand a little more from my honors and gifted students.

For example, I want citations.
