Wire Rope Sling Inspection and Discard Criteria

Clean wire rope slings and inspect sling for the following defects or damage:

• Sling to be fitted with ID tag or stamped onferrule

• Tag to displayWLLand certificate number orID details

• Check ferrules and thimbles for damage, wear or bending

• Broken wires in sling in excess of 5% over x10 diameter of sling

• Or, 6 or more broken wires in one lay length• Or, 3 or more broken wires in the same strand

in one lay length• Or, any broken wires in eye area or at ferrule• Rope wear in excess of 10% of nominal

diameter • Permanent coils, kinks or doglegs• Bird caging exposing the core• Ropeflatteningexposingcore• Surface damage such as weld splatter• Burnt wires• Corrosion, rope fatigue or square breaks
