MESSAGE FROM OUR GOVERNOR

The leaves are falling, the temperatures are drop-ping and the weather forecast I heard on the news tonight used the “s” word! We are heading into the holiday season, and coming up soon is Thanksgiving.

This is the time of year for reflection on those things for which we are thankful, and this year I have a long list. We are all so fortunate that we live in this

country, and in Lions District 11-E2. We are surrounded by beautiful country and more importantly by wonderful caring Lions. As I visit our clubs, I am so proud of what we accomplish. We buy glasses, provide hearing aids, build handicapped ramps, do vision screenings, provide food for the poor and so much more. Our clubs are all different, as we come from small or large, rich or poor communities, but we have in common a desire to help our neighbors. I am so thankful that all of us are able to use our treasure and talents to help those less fortunate.

This is the time of year where the weather may not permit as many fundraisers as we have in other months, but a time of year where we can do so much to help others. One of Lions International’s signature service categories is “Relieving the Hunger”, and many of the district clubs give money to shelters or food pantries to help the needy enjoy the same wonderful Thanksgiving dinners we all get to eat. I can hardly wait to eat pumpkin pie, and it makes me feel good that my club and so many others contribute so others can as well.

Our other three signature service categories are Sharing the Vision, Protecting our Environment and Engaging our Youth. As we move closer to our 100th anniver-sary in 2017, we should all be thinking about what we can do for our communities that fall into these categories. there that your club can do that would fall into the cat-egory “Sharing the Vision”? If you haven’t done a KidSight screening lately, think about doing one. Plan an afternoon working at a Secretary of State’s office to sign up more organ donors. If you come up with other ideas that fit this category, share them with the rest of the District clubs at your next zone meeting. We all

have unique and interesting things that we do, so let’s share those ideas. Your club’s great project may spark a great project in another club and give that communi-ty something new for which to be thankful!

Have a great Thanksgiving, and don’t eat too much turkey!

AMAZON SMILE FOUNDATION — The Lions of Michigan Foundation is now registered at AmazonSmile. This is a program where Amazon (through the AmazonSmileFoundation) donates 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to charitable organizations selected by its customers. When you shop at smile.amazon.com you will have access to all of the Amazon products at the same prices, however, you can designate the Lions of Michigan Foun-dation to receive the 0.05% offered by Amazon.Smile.

ROMANCE NOVELIST—When Lion Marianne Tremaroli, wife of International Director Steve Tremaroli, spoke at our district convention this past May, she asked us to take small steps to become involved in our Lions’ clubs. She made reference to each step in the process as if it were a chapter in a book she was writing. What perfect imagery, as she is an author of four romance novels, “A Find through Time,” “Amulet of Darkness,” and “Rebecca’s Ghost.” Her fourth novel, “Behind the Mask,” takes place in France during the early years of the French resistance. Learn more by visiting her webpage at www.mariannepetitbooks.com.

PEACE POSTER CONTEST GUIDELINES: 1. Only one (1) Peace Poster per Lions club may be submitted for District 11-E2 judging. 2. A participating Lions Club should notify PDG Bill Stenback before sending an entry ([email protected]

or 231-544-6522). 3. The postmark deadline is November 15, 2014. 4. Mail to: PDG Bill Stenback, PO Box 242, Central Lake MI 49622-0242

MESSAGE FROM OUR VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Why do we have a website? Well, it is available to anyone, anywhere in the world. You don’t have to ask to join to view any-thing on milions11e2.org. It is there 24 hours a day. It reflects what Lions in northeastern Michi-gan are doing. This is a resource

of which you should take advantage.

The entry page contains a photo of DG Barb and Duane Durflinger. Below that photo is the important contact information for LCI and Lions of Michigan. Be-low that are links to the District Constitution and By-laws and the LCI Policy Manual. There is a statement directing you to the District Policy Manual.

There are pages which show photos of our projects, our clubs, and our news. You can get a feel for what other clubs in this district are doing. The NEWS page is in chronological order. The latest news is the first thing that you see. I try to include a photo of whatever a club sends to me but that’s not always possible

The latest addition to the website is the Photos of Lions Clubs page. As I travel around the District I will take of photo of the club when I visit. I will put that photo on the website on that page.

Other pages are self explanatory. Lions Clubs by Zone, District Officers, District Lions Clubs (includes

contact information for all club officers), Calendar of Events and much more information that is important to the District.

This newsletter will appear on the website just as soon as I get it. There is a folder entitled District News-letters and all of this year’s newsletters are located there. Likewise, there is a folder entitled Club News-letters. Any club that sends me their newsletter will find it there.

Another page is a link to the LCI website and takes you to Lions Clubs Members Resources. There are downloadable Lions clubs member resources, includ-ing logos, program guides, brochures and forms to help you.

This is a dynamic website. Some of the information will only change annually but there is information be-ing added all the time.

The last folder in the menu is All Projects. This lists our State Projects, District Projects and other projects that deserve attention. I encourage all clubs to consid-er making a donation to all of the projects listed.

A minimum donation from each of our 36 clubs can make such a difference in people’s lives. Remember, if someone in your community needs help and it is be-yond your club’s finances to cover it, the District or the State projects are there to assist.

VDG Bob

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

LIONS PROSPECT CARD—What do you do when you are talking to a prospective Lion? Do you fumble for some-thing to write on or give to that person? Consider printing a club “prospect” card that you can give to the person you are talking with. You can modify this format to fit your club. Give each member of your club several cards just in case they might need them!

WELCOME!

This program recognizes Lions for their length of service, beginning at 10 years and continuing in five year increments until 75 years of service. There are two different types of chevrons that vary slightly in appearance, the Charter Monarch Chevron, available to founding club members on-ly, and the Monarch Chevron. Chevron awards for the current fiscal year are automatically sent to district governors in the first quarter for presentation to the recipients at an appropriate event, such as a district conven-tion or other celebration.

I want to encourage you to continue sight-saving efforts through your club, your district, and beyond. Every project helps reduce preventable blindness and save sight, just like every donation to LCIF can help make a difference.

LCIF Recognizes Top Contributors in 2013-2014

Each year, Lions Clubs International Foundation recognizes the Lions districts and clubs that were top contributors in financial support of the Foundation. It is through this kind of generosity that LCIF can save and preserve sight, provide disaster relief, sup-port youth and meet humanitarian needs in local communities and around the world. You can view this year’s list online.

The LCIF recognition categories include the top five districts in each constitutional area based on total giving; the top five districts in each constitutional area based on per member average; the top five clubs in each constitutional area based on total giving; the districts in which 100 percent of clubs donated to LCIF; and more. Thank you and

congratulations!

LCIF Awards Humanitarian Grants

More than US$4.4 million was awarded in Lions Clubs International Foundation grants during the October 2014 Board of Trustees meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. With these funds, 56 grants will support life-changing projects around the world. Lions will expand an orphanage in South Africa, support volunteer emergency services in the United Kingdom, provide children's vision screening equipment in the United States, MD300 Taiwan and Japan, equip a home for the elderly in Portugal, fund a food program for women in Burkina Faso, and much more. Lions will help millions of people worldwide through these grants, which were made possible through your support. Thank you for your contributions to LCIF!

Dear Lions,

With World Sight Day taking place earlier this month, I was thinking about the amazing accom-plishments that Lions and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) have been able to achieve together. The theme of World Sight Day this year was “No More Preventable Blindness,” which is something we have been working towards for years by fighting diseases through SightFirst and working with partners to make a difference. Our Sight for Kids partnership with Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Companies (JJVCC) is a great example of what can be achieved. The Sight for Kids program has screened the vision of more than 20 million schoolchildren in Asia Pacific who might not have received a vision screening otherwise. And, the partnership program provides glasses and follow-up care as needed, all for free to students in need.
