June 20th Berkeley City Council disappointingly, voted to continue participation in Urban Shield, NCRIC and purchased the militarized van. After the final vote to continue the militarization, fusion center data collection, and to own a bulletproof van, concerned citizens spoke eloquently for hours. Outraged at the decision, the audience members moved in peacefully to display their banner across the stage. We then, experienced first hand what Urban Shield looks like. No glimpse of de-escalation training although emphasized in Berkeley Police Department’s presentation, instead we got a glimpse of the policing paradigm many around the country are so afraid of. Let’s unite to bring change, we can and must do better to transform policing.  http://sfbayview.com/2017/06/the-federalization-of-local-police-why-the-urban-shield-vote-failed/

Over 500 people packed the middle school auditorium, a larger than usual venue for the Berkeley City Council meeting on Urban Shield, which lasted six and a half hours. Berkeley residents raise their hands to show that that hundreds of the people who showed up to insist Berkeley get out of Urban Shield, USAI and NCRIC are residents and not outsiders as some council members had suggested. – Photo: Brooke Anderson

May 30th Frances Rachel who turned 100 years old received a proclamation for her excellence in years of activism. Sadly, Frances passed away June 27, 2017 but her spirit lives on.

April 17th We held a forum on the “Militarization of Police: What does it mean for Berkeley?” forum at The Way Christian Center. Pastor McBride shared opening remarks, Councilmembers Davila and Harrison moderated along with the Mayor Jesse Arreguin, who gave closing remarks. The outstanding panel, consisted of John Lindsay -Poland (American Friends Service Committee), Andrea Prichett (Copwatch), Jim Chanin (Civil Rights Attorney), Tash Nyguen (Ella Baker Center) and Rochelle Watson (Peace & Justice Commission).

April 14th D2’s Councilmember, along with Mayor Jesse Arrequín and Councilmember Sophie Hahn announced that the 2nd Street shelter would remain open past the original closing date, thanks to the generosity of donors. The shelter stayed open until June 15th.

On December 21st, I spoke with a person who I met at the shelter last April. The shelter provided a community and environment that allowed this individual to be stable enough to secure a job and is now housed.

January 29th We held a community meeting to discuss the shootings in District 2. Over 300 community members expressed concerns of violence, and we heard from the Goodwin family who lost their son, Alex Goodwin to gun violence. The meeting was insightful and the attendance alone, shed light on our how large and powerful our city is. It will take time, patience and persistence to evaluate the root causes of violence, strategize and resolve. Our office is working diligently to bring more peace and unity to our communities. Please note: There is a $20K reward for information leading to an arrest for the murder of Alex Goodwin.

Our Deepest Condolences  The Councilmember heard Mayor Edward Lee speak on December 8th at the 56th Annual Holiday Moose Feed Luncheon, he passed away 2 days later. Our condolences go to his family and all of San Francisco for their loss.   Tragedy strikes far too often, gun violence is the cause, by a cowardly assailant(s). We are saddened by the recent killings throughout our nation and beyond.    Please accept our condolences to all that were affected by the fires in our neighboring communities and throughout California.  Our hearts are heavy with the devastation in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, Texas, and Florida the wake of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.   With the rest of our nation, we mourn the loss of lives taken by acts of terrorism in Charlottesville , Barcelona and Nevada. We stand united in love and wish for healing for all.  We offer our deepest condolences to the families of Charles Austin, Elisa Cooper and Officer Alan Roberds as they mourn the transitioning of their loved ones. This time of year is especially difficult, you are in our thoughts and prayers.   We encourage you to please take care of yourself including your mental health. Please take a moment to see what resources are available, should you or a loved one be in need of support. Please take good care of you and your family. These are turbulent times, we must stand together, unite and resist.

Recognizing Excellence in our Community   Thank you to all, including firefighters, police officers and volunteers from Berkeley Fire and Berkeley Police Departments that worked tirelessly to put out the fires, save lives in Napa, Sonoma and beyond. Some of whom responded to the other catastrophic weather events throughout the United States. Thank you for your courage.   We would like to recognize the constituents and organizations for inspiring our community. Thank you for all you do for all of us. You know who you are!
