he arrival of October signals “last call” for our 2017 boating season.
And it’s a great time to be out on the wa-ter with cooler temps, no bugs and the beautiful fall colors. Let’s get together again this month on Sunday the 15
th for a unique, first-time
event for Skokie Valley – The Untoucha-ble Gangster Bus Tour in Chicago. We’ll learn the history of Chicago’s 1920’s – 1930’s underworld. And we’ll visit some infamous locations where history was made. Immediately following the tour is our Oc-tober Dinner Meeting at Maggiano’s Little Italy. At the dinner we can hear about the recent Mississippi Houseboat River cruise (Sept 29 – Oct 1). Thanks P/C Ron Zingler for arranging these great events. One week later, on the 20
th & 21
st, we’ll meet up
at the D/20 Fall Confer-ence in Elgin. Football is the theme. As per our usual, we will have a ful-ly decorated, fully stocked hospitality suite. Join us Friday night dressed up in football attire (pads optional). Bring a dish to share, and have a good time. There will be two seminars (t.b.a.) on Saturday morning. To be followed by the Education Awards Luncheon at noon. “A great skipper always uses his excel-lent judgment so as not to be forced to show off his amazing skill.” Source un-known.

Boating Trivia: Which brand of outboard was the
first to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 1985?
The Impact of Hurricanes
After seeing the damage done by Hurricane Harvey and Irma, I thought it would be interesting to look back at Katrina which was considered a national catastrophe. It was the most economically de-structive storm in the history of the United States. Damage from the storm and the resulting flooding of New Orleans has been estimated at 96 billion Dollars. About 300,000 homes were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. The loss of life was over 1,300 deaths. Most of the property damage was the result of breaches in the levees designed to protect New Orleans. Katrina made landfall as a category 3 storm.
The Damage and loss of life were pri-marily due to poor planning. As of this writing we don’t know the economic cost of Harvey and Irma. The loss of life is considerably less than that of Katrina. However, even though we were much better prepared for Harvey and Irma, it is believed the economic loss will be great-er than Katrina. As we continue to migrate to the coastal areas, whether it be for vacation living or relocation, with the earth getting warmer we will continue to see these major storms causing considerable destruction.

Introducing the New USPS Website…
At the USPS Governing Board meeting in Dallas, the USPS Marketing Committee announced they are launching a new public facing website. BeyondBoating.org The website has an updated look and feel that reflects our brand identity, is mobile responsive, and is designed to attract boaters to membership. It emphasizes we are a boating organization, offering much more beyond boating, like friendships, improving our boating community, and building confidence on the water through boating safety and education. The new public facing website will be part of a larger marketing and advertising effort starting in the Winter/Spring of 2018. Additionally, it will incorporate the America’s Boating Club logo and links from the AmericasBoatingClub.org website. Members will be able to login from the new website, and be redirected to our member site.
