INTERNATIONAL SERVICE NARRATIVE

KENYA ORPHANAGE PROJECT:

For several years now, The Rotary Club of Hawaii Kai has had a relationship with an orphanage in Kenya that

has proven to be of great need and fiscally responsible due to the accountability of a local church. This year’s

project was to repopulate a chicken farm that produced the eggs for the orphanage staff and children that was

wiped out this past year by an unexpected predator attack. Our Club donated a total of $800 to complete this

project in two installations, the purchase of the livestock and the equipment to repair the caging. The money

has now been sent and our club expects a full report this spring.

“MADE IN HOPE” CHILD SEX TRAFFICKING PREVENTION

This is a new project for our club as there have been several speakers to come visit our Club to present their

organization and the work done as well as the great need in this area of the world’s service. Our Club chose to

support financially the new “Made in Hope” organization that gives young women an alternative occupation

to prostitution after they have already been brainwashed into the lifestyle of prostitution and made to believe it

is their only option. Our club’s donations will help many thousands of very young children in years to come

find a way out of the slavery of prostitution in the Philippines and elsewhere in southeast Asia.

SISTER CLUB:

The Rotary Club of Kyoto Japan paid a special visit to our humble Club this year to kick-off our sister club

arrangement put together by one of our Club members and the District sister club coordinator. This

partnership will hopefully bring a bridge to Japan and Hawaii for our small Club and we look forward to more

gift exchanges and cooperative projects in future years.

The Rotary Club of Kapolei International Service Award We had numerous International Projects planned for this year. However, on October 29, 2012; Hurricane Sandy caused severe damage to Staten Island, New York. On Staten Island, which is only 16 miles long and 8 miles wide – 0ver 285 residents were killed, damage ran into several billion dollars, and over 200,000 were homeless. This was the worst Hurricane of the 2012 hurricane season. In the past, severe domestic catastrophies qualified for matching grants and money was used in lieu of International Projects. We contacted D5000 to see if we could use our International funds for this project and were told we could. The Rotary Club of Kapolei launched a District 5000-wide relief effort for these people. Several Clubs in District 5000 participated. We immediately contacted Dr. Dong Joon Lee who is the Past District Governor of District 7230 (New York and Bermuda). Dr. Lee is a member of the Rotary Club of Staten Island and was designated the Rotary point man for this relief effort. Dr. Lee had the assistance of 5 Interact Clubs on Staten Island who worked on the clean-up and getting food and clothing to the homeless victims. New York is cold in October. During this time temperatures dropped into the 20’s. So the money was used to purchase sweat suits and rubber boots for the homeless victims – many of which were living in tents and buses. Back in Hawaii, the Rotary Club of Kapolei went out through D5000 to partner up with clubs to provide relief funds. We came up with $6248 that we sent to Dr. Lee who in turn matched that, then got District 7230 to match that and then on to Rotary International to match that. Additionally, during this year the Rotary Club of Kapolei Donated money to the Following: An Orphanage in Cambodia. A library in the Philippines A water project in Thailand. Rotoplast to do cosmetic surgery on patients with cleft lips and/or cleft pallets. Christina Enoka, Our Past President, will be leading up the GSE team to Eastern Europe this year.

2012-2013 Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise partnered in a matching grant to help provide dialysis machines for kidney care in Rotary Bangalore Downtown Dialysis Center in Bangalore Karnataka, India. IRUSKU, RUSSIA: For eight years our club has been a financial sponsor of Cat 2 in Russia. Participation in this project is through Orphan Act. The goal is to educate to the highest level those capable of schooling, train all children with the skills which may lead to employment and to prepare those who could leave the orphanage at the age of 18 to adjust to real life and live independently. MEETING VISITORS/COMMEMORATIVE COIN: Our Club holds our meetings at a restaurant in the center of a resort area on one of the Best Islands in the World. This results in Rotarians from many parts of the world making up meetings at our club. During this year we have been fortunate to mingle with Rotarians from Germany, England, Switzerland, and Australia and from many provinces in Canada. Our club president awards our Commemorative Coin to the Rotarian who has travelled the most distance to attend a meeting. Award Category: International Service (H) NARRATIVE:

This past year, I, Carmen Karady, visited three project sites in Egypt: The first site is in a village outside Alexandria where a water project was initiated one year ago and is in the process of completion. Up until now, the women went to the canal to fetch their supply of water with buckets on their head. The second was a literacy project for women based in Cairo. The three other components attached to this project were (1) sewing, where they learned to use patterns and make clothing from recycled materials; (2) hygiene, and (3) family planning. When the young women successfully completed the entire course, they received a sewing machine. The third project, MG 78218, which was approved just recently, is a water project where a village will have its water supply connected to the municipal system which will make it sanitary. Aside from the MGs, our club helped sponsor the RYLA kids to travel to Honolulu for the International Peace Forum. Two of our club members, Senator Roz Baker and myself, attended the Forum as well. Currently, we are preparing for the Polish GSE Team and have committed our club to host them at the Old Lahaina Luau. Two members from our club are attending the RI Conference in Lisbon: President-elect Dr. Anne Biedel and myself. We would like to snag another international project during this time, possibly in Algeria.

International Service Award

The Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset has been forging new relationships with international funding sources for a

proposed “Reverse” Matching Grant application. The Club has been partnering with a Pahoa non-profit

organization (Ho’oulu Lahui) to carry out the first stage of development of a future Pu’ala’a la Cultural Center

for the area. This first stage involves constructing a Trail and planting Breadfruit and Coconut trees through

an ancient village site on the Puna Coast. Following the Peace Forum in Honolulu in January, several Taiwan

and Thailand and Russian Rotary Club representatives visited the Pahoa project site for a brief inspection and

to attend a ground breaking ceremony. Funding commitments have been received from six different

international clubs and Districts for this proposed project in Hawaii.

At the same time (during the month of January) our Club President-Elect and his wife volunteered to teach in

Rotary English Camps in Thailand schools for two weeks. These Camps were organized by a Chiang Rai and

an Alaskan Rotary Club. Following this activity, our PE then participated in a water filter installation project

jointly sponsored by the Chiang Mai and Pennisula (Redwood City) Rotary Clubs in a Hill Tribe village near

Chiang Mai. Excellent future relationships have been developed through these international contacts, which

will assist our Club and District in developing future Thailand project

TRF Chair was only filled for half of the year, so much of the prior year information was lost. The recovery has held up well enough to allow success in spite of the obstacles in which we have needed to overcome. The chair was filled by a very resilient lady who the club has appreciated for her diligence and continued effort to make things work. The support of many, is why matching grants work as well. This year, we are committing $450 to the Rotoplast International Project which allows surgeries of cleft lip in other countries, to take place for children who would otherwise not be able to afford such an expensive procedure. It was voted unanimously by our board. We are excited to see how well it works out.

Christmas Parade: Every year we create a float and join the fun in the annual Waimea Christmas Light Parade. This year it was a little different in that we partnered with all of the island's club to create one float of peace with origami storks to hand out to the children watching the parade. We had thousands of them made up from children in Morimoto Japan, which is a sister club to Kauai.. Social Humanitarian Events with all island clubs: We participated in the Humanitarian Awards Dinner with all island clubs this year. This allowed us the opportunity to recognize a non-Rotarian in the community for their service above self and humanitarian achievements. This was a publicized event which was received well by all. Matching Grants: Matching grant project was completed through partnership with RC of Kona Mauka, Hawaii & Rotary Club of Grahamstown to fund computer project for PJ Oliver HS in South Africa. After the school burnt down last year, the project remained as a continuing effort through this year. GSE Hosting: Participating in GSE this year – by hosting an all-island Rotary BBQ for the GSE team while they are on Kauai in May. This is also a combined effort to entertain and transport the members of the team around while on Kauai.

This narrative will cover Club Administration as well as International Service.

West Pearl Harbor’s biggest strength is in its International Service where it has dug water wells and

supported a street children’s orphanage in Cambodia.

This year 4 club members attended the RI convention and followed that with a trip to Cambodia to

which we also invited members of Kapolei, Wai’enae, and Metro clubs, as well as two friends, a spouse,

and a Thai volunteer.

During the visit to the orphanage we donated 1 ton of rice, a swing and slide set, and a computer lab

with six used computers and an internet connection (courtesy of an Internet company that we

arranged). We had a lunch and entertained the children with Nalani teaching them the hukilau song

and hula.

A trip was made to inspect one of the wells which had been dug previously and to donate farm tools to

the villagers.

We brought 50 sets of the LN-4 hands to Cambodia. Our group was only able to fit one but we

prevailed on an Australian doctor to fit another hand and enlisted his Rotary Club into the LN-4

project (they mailed a picture of the recipient).

Although the LN-4 hand project has only started, we are trying to find a way to work with the Buddhist

monks to find a way to get the hands fitted onto the many needy persons of Cambodia.
