IPDG Dr. Prakash Chandran inducted Rtn. Vinod Kutty as the new District Governor of the District. Rtn. Colonel V K. Poised at the threshold of a new Rotary Year, Rotary around the world is looking forward to making a difference in the world, the communities and the lives of its people based on the three strategic priorities set forth by the RI Board, namely strengthening the clubs, increasing sustainable humanitarian service and enhancing public image. Editor: Which are the major events that you attended in July?DG: I was very impressed with the water projects of Rotary Club of Kalladikkode that I inaugurated in two schools. The project involved recharging of groundwater level by using storm water sent back into the well after chemical filtration. Kalladikkode Club also installed a kiosk providing pure drinking water using RO techniques on the main highway. Travellers on this highway can avail themselves of this facility day and night free of cost. On the same day, the Club also did a massive tree-planting project. I also had the opportunity to participate in the Rotaract District Installation Ceremony at Coimbatore where Rtr. Ajay Chandran was installed as DRR. I participated in a 2-day seminar on TRF Endowment Major Gift and CSR held at New Delhi. This was attended by all DGs and TRF functionaries from across the country. RI Director C Basker and TRF Trustee Susheel Gupta led the deliberations, which were attended, by PRIPs Raja Saboo, Kalyan Banerjee and KR Ravindran. All India TB control project and election reform initiatives were also discussed at this conclave.

Editor: Which is the major program in the coming weeks? DG: August is Membership Development Month. Rotary Club of Coimbatore is hosting Abhivrddhi, our District Membership Seminar, jointly with sister clubs of Coimbatore on the 17th of September.

Editor: What is your vision for Rotary Year 2017-18?Rotary District 3201 in 2017-18 will do projects that will address the concerns related to water in our District. We will start by creating awareness amongst the people on conserving water. Our concern will not be about just drinking water, but also about conserving and avoiding wastage of water through several means. I also hope to simplify all functions of the Rotary keeping their elegance intact. If all Rotarians are in agreement on this, we can avoid ostentatious displays, thus saving money which can be diverted into worthwhile service projects.

Editor: Congratulations, Sir! The District changeover at Vadakkencherry on 2nd July was indeed, simple and elegant. What in your view was the best takeaway for the Clubs from the event?DG: I am happy that Presidents of 132 out of our 139 clubs were also installed along with me at the same event. This shows that our clubs have accepted the ‘simple and elegant’ concept. For the first time, DG’s installation was combined with the Presidents’ installation. I understand that many clubs later did simple changeover ceremonies at their clubs thereby saving substantial expenses.

Editor: Do you have a similar style – simple and elegant – in mind for the GOVs?Yes, I do. I have devised a couple of new formats for the GOVs for the individual clubs to choose from. They can opt for a combined visit or a half-day visit or continue with the current way of a full-day GOV, though I would prefer one of the new formats which are far simpler. Under the new formats, combined visits would include 3 clubs under the same GGR with separate meetings with the presidents and secretaries of each club and separate club assemblies. They would also include project visits of the different clubs, and there would be a joint public meeting of all the clubs.

DG in Conversation with Ripples

We need to change if we are to make a difference. It was our

founder Paul Harris who said so rightly: “If Rotary is to realize it's

proper destiny, it must be EVOLUTIONARY at all times,

REVOLUTIONARY on occasions.”

R I President'sMessage

R I Director'sMessage

Dear Fellow Rotarians,When someone asks you, “What is Rotary?” what do you say? I think we’ve all had the experience of being asked that deceptively simple question and finding ourselves suddenly at a loss for words. Even the most articulate among us have a hard time capturing the essence of our organisation in just a few sentences. As an organisation, Rotary has always had a difficult time conveying the scope of our work: not just what we do, but how we do it, and the value of what we contribute to the world. As an accountant, I like numbers. They work in every language, and often they communicate complex information much more effectively than words. That is why, in this Rotary year, I am asking each club to provide Rotary headquarters with two numbers: the amount of money, both in cash and in kind, spent on humanitarian service; and the number of hours of work performed in Rotary’s name.If we want these numbers to be useful, they have to be accurate. That means beginning now to accurately track the hours and the money that our clubs spend on their service. The simplest way for clubs to provide this information at the end of the year will be by entering it every month on Rotary Club Central - a tool that has been completely rebuilt and relaunched to be significantly more useful, and user-friendly, than it has been in the past. If for some reason (for example, limited internet access) your club is

Ian H S RiseleyPresident, Rotary International

not able to connect to Rotary Club Central, please be in touch with your district governor, who will ensure that your information can be submitted through other means.I cannot emphasise strongly enough that the goal of this effort is not getting the largest and most impressive numbers. There is not going to be any competition, recognition, or public use whatsoever of the numbers reported by any individual club. The goal is accurate and reliable numbers that we can present confidently in our public image work, in our membership materials, and to our partners - numbers backed by specific data, on the club level, that answer not only the question, “What is Rotary?” but the question, “What does Rotary do?”I strongly believe that with these numbers, we will be better able to demonstrate the value of Rotary: Making a Difference - which in time will enable us to make more of a difference, for more people, in more ways, than ever.

Dear Rotarians,At the outset Mala joins me in thanking you for your good wishes and the support extended to me to serve as a RI Director for the year 2017-19.I am glad to inform you that once again our Zones 4,5 & 6A contributed over USD 20 million to the TRF. We maintained our rank as the second highest contributing nation to TRF. And this despite the challenges due to demonetisation. I am happy and proud that we were able to achieve this milestone. This is all the more significant because it happened in a year when we were celebrating Rotary Foundation centennial and with our TRF Trustee Chair Kalyanda at the helm of affairs of the Rotary Foundation. Congratulations to each and every Rotarian who with their contribution supported TRF in 2016 -17.I hope some of you might have read my interview that appeared in RNT news magazine, June ’17 edition. Even though we have grown phenomenally in membership over the last few years you will no doubt agree with me that the quality of meetings, projects and other activities have come down due to lack of training to Rotarians and educating them on Rotary values. I therefore wish to propose certain new initiatives in this Rotary Year to improve the quality of our interactions at all levels of Rotary for which I seek your support:

Membership:1. The number based recognition process is being reviewed and a new evaluation method will be introduced based on qualitative criteria for recognitions.2. It is agreed at the DG council meeting that weak clubs (less than 20 members) need to be strengthened by adding more members before 31st Dec ’17 or they will be advised to merge with another club.3. The Rotary clubs which do not meet and are considered as ‘phantom’ clubs will be identified and their closure recommended.4. Recommended membership criteria has been given to Rotary Club Presidents to understand the importance of quality before inviting a new member into a club.Training:1. PETS & SETS training agenda has been made uniform across the Zones 4, 5 & 6A based on the RI Handbook.2. RI President & Secretary handbooks have been translated into regional languages and a hard copy has been given to the Presidents & Secretaries free of cost in addition to the English version given by RI.3. District Training Assembly will be only for training club officers and not for others.4. An animated video film - ‘Dos and Don’ts’ has been specially made to help the club leaders to conduct

Members can download and install in their respective phones and use their email ids as user id and temporary password as “rid3201”. The logged-in members may see all their club members’ list. The members may access a web application link http://ridist3201.clubful.com using the same email id and password to reset password and change their details, etc. Each club will be given an admin account with which they can manage their club / members, etc. Key Features: Club Details (My Club), Member List, Office Bearers, Meetings, Sister Clubs, Blood Group, Birthdays, Anniversaries, My District, etc.

orderly club meetings. https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=I3_bCkYvDwg5. For the first time we have conducted national level training programs under the name of ‘Disha’ for training DMC, DRFC, DPIC, DLC & DWC at Mumbai on 24th - 26th February ’17 so that we speak and act in one voice across the country.6. Both DEMGC & DCSRC were trained by EMGAs & RISAO staffs at New Delhi on 22nd - 23rd July ’17 at a national level training seminar.7. In order to give thrust to the Rotaract movement, a DRR & DRCC training program is organised at national level at Hyderabad on 29th - 30th July ’17.Public Image:1. Rotary Clubs are requested to download a copy of the brand manual from the download centre of RI web site and use only those images for their branding purpose for uniformity.2. Rotary Clubs are advised to give wide publicity to their activities through newspapers, local media channels and build outreach programmes to take the Rotary message to the masses.Service Projects:1. Rotary Clubs are requested to identify local community needs and address the same on priority (bottom to top approach) rather than doing community service projects recommended by others.New Initiatives:1. India has become Four Zones (4, 5, 6 & 7) w.e.f. 1st July 2017 and the details can be seen on RI website. However, the practical working of these Zones will come into effect only from 1st July 2019.2. To explain the benefit of creation of endowments and major gifts in the name of loved ones with TRF, a district level position as ‘District Endowment and Major Gift Chair - DEMGC’ has been created this year. They will identify potential Rotarians of the district with the guidance of DG & EMGA.3. You are aware that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs has introduced the concept of ‘Corporate Social Responsibility – CSR’ where profit making corporates in India are required to spend two percent of their net

profit in CSR service projects. I understand more than Rs. 15,000 crores is available for worthy community service projects within India annually. The Rotary Foundation has already given permission to Rotary Foundation India (RFI) to accept CSR funds and spend it through Rotary Clubs/Districts for helping the needy. To take advantage of this new initiative, DGs have already appointed ‘District Corporate Social Responsibility Chair - DCSRC’ to identify corporates in their district and start building relationships with them to partner in service through CSR.The Rotary Foundation:1. We have requested all the DGs to clearly inform the following important TRF rules to Rotary Clubs:a. Money cannot be received from any beneficiary for doing a Global Grant Project.b. Any member of Rotary Club shall not claim any TRF recognition like PHF or Major Donor by receiving money from others and falsely crediting to his Foundation Contribution Account.2. RFI also has set up an oversight panel for India with PDGs as volunteers to oversee global grants which have submitted closure report this year for compliance. This monitoring will reduce stewardship complaints on GGs from India.End Polio Campaign:1. You may be aware that we need about USD 1.2 billion to successfully complete our End Polio campaign within the next three years. The District Governors have agreed to prioritize collection towards End Polio collection this year and I request you to speak on this initiative whenever you get a chance at Club/ District/Zone levels.Administration:1. Rotary Clubs have been advised to circulate a copy of their constitution and byelaws to all their members, and Governors have been asked to verify this during their GOV.2. DGs have been advised to print District Directory containing the District byelaws for ready reference to Rotarians of the District.3. I understand that a number of trusts in the name of Rotary are functioning at the District

and club levels. I have advised the District Governor to check the activities and financial transparency of these trusts.4. Districts have been advised to reduce the number of events by merging two seminars (Ex: Membership & Public Image) to bring down the administrative costs of Rotary and to save members’ time.Election:1. RI has introduced e voting across the world for elections and from this year the vendor who conducts e voting for Zones 4, 5 & 6A is from USA appointed by RI. The Club President who participates in e voting can take a print out to whom he/she has cast the vote for records after voting.2. Any complaints on election campaign and canvassing is viewed very seriously by RI and if the complaint is proven the membership of the Rotarian will be terminated.Council of Governors:It is recommended to DGs to conduct at least three meetings a year to discuss about the growth and other relevant matters. This also can be used as a forum to resolve any internal issues amicably. One of the COG meetings can be a retreat with spouses with overnight stay in a mutually agreed location within the District.Rotary News Trust:We are looking at the possibilities of providing RNT magazine in the preferred regional languages for the subscriber to read with interest.PRIP K.R. Ravindran Panel:PRIP John Germ & RIP Ian Riseley have appointed PRIP K. R. Ravindran to set up a panel to enquire into complaints related to administrative, financial and operational misconduct in the districts in our zones.I am sure with your understanding and cooperation, Rotary India will emerge as one of the best amongst Rotary nations in the world in serving humanity and making a difference.

Editor’s NoteDear Reader,The new Rotary Year has begun in a totally new way. This year the District Governor and the Presidents of 132 Rotary Clubs of District 3201 were installed on the same day at the same function. Hopefully, this will help the Clubs have more money to spare for more humanitarian services to the community. This will also enhance the image of Rotary thus attracting more people to Rotary. In short, the ‘simple and elegant’ theme set off by DG Rtn. Vinod K Kutty is going to indirectly, if not directly, contribute to the three strategic priorities put forward by the RI Board. Most appropriately, the DG tells us via his interview included in this newsletter, the GOVs are also going to follow a similar format. DG Rtn. Kutty’s choice of water-related projects for the current Rotary Year is also very relevant and the need of the day. This is a most opportune choice considering RI President Rtn. Riseley’s observation that environmental sustainability is a matter of concern that can be ignored by Rotary no more. With projects focussing on conservation of water and avoidance of wastage of water in the different areas of the District in different ways as needed, we are

going to positively make a difference in the community. Rotary Kalladikkode has already gone ahead and completed a wonderful project with many more on the anvil by the rest of the Clubs. Ripples updates you with the fine details.I request all Rotary members in charge of various responsibilities to promptly send updates on activities along with relevant images to the Ripples Editorial, so we can include them in the newsletter. This would not only be informative, but also inspirational to other Club members. I also request you to kindly send your feedbacks and suggestions as regards various projects so we can make

possible improvements.

Wish you all an active month of August!

With warm regards,

Rtn. Dileep NarayananGML Editor [email protected]

team –“LET US MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE.” The GRANTS MANAGEMENT SEMINAR and PRE-PETS were held at regional levels at COIMBATORE, KALLADIKODE, KOLENCHERRY and COCHIN which were well attended and most of the clubs qualified for the grants. I specially thank all the organizing clubs for the wonderful conduct of their maiden ventures at training. A special mention of DRFC and TRF team, who meticulously imparted essentials of GRANTS and STEWARDSHIP to the Club Presidents, Secretaries and Club Rotary Foundation Chairs. The clubs now have a working knowledge on TRF and can make use

Report on Training Programs for the Rotary Year 2017-18

Training is an essential part for the success of any organization. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL is now emphasizing the need for training to reach the grassroot Rotarians and clubs which form the backbone of our organization. With this in mind and our District Governor Rtn. Vinod K Kutty’s theme of having “SIMPLE AND ELEGANT” programs, we had decided to restructure our training methodology.

Our DISTRICT TRAINING TEAM SEMINAR was held at Coimbatore and we have trained 54 committed and dedicated Rotarians in all aspects of Rotary’s mission and goals. These trainers are from 4 regions and they are available to enlighten the clubs and its members on a day-to-day basis. I request all the clubs in our District to make use of their services.

Our RI President’s theme ‘ ROTARY MAKING A DIFFERENCE’ was declared at the Rotary International Assembly and we further incorporated this into the future training methodology.

The ASSISTANT GOVERNOR’S TRAINING PROGRAM ‘BOOT CAMP – MUNNAR’ was held in February 2017. This was a residential training program and was attended by 23 vibrant Assistant Governors and 4 District Directors, all selected on their past performances as Presidents, and previous District Officials. As this report goes to print, I am proud to say that these leaders have been working as a team since then and have already planted seeds which have sprouted and are now nurturing the saplings on an individual basis and I have no doubt we will have an excellent harvest of fruits by the end of the year. Keep it up

of the TRF and Trainers to further help them in planning and implementing grants projects.PETS - The PRESIDENT ELECTS TRAINING SEMINAR was held at Angamaly and for the first time it was conducted without registration fees. This too was a residential program and had all President Elects participate actively in the various interactive sessions. The ice breaking sessions, group tasks, group entertainment and team work sessions have started making these GEMS of our District envisage common programs at Regional and District levels. Almost all clubs have conducted the BLOOD DONATION CAMPS on 1st JULY 2017 and are going ahead with the Tree Plantation. A special mention of the District Secretariat which was instrumental in organizing, coordinating and conducting these events in an exemplary manner – kudos! DRONA 2K17 - The DISTRICT OFFICERS TRAINING was held on 27th MAY at COIMBATORE, where all the District Chairs in all avenues of service were given the necessary tools to work with their committees with special emphasis on RI and District priorities and large and combined community service projects. This was the maiden venture of the Club and it was well planned and organized by the vibrant Chairman and his team and they have the capacity to undertake bigger programs.

SADAS 2K17 was The DISTRICT ASSEMBLY held on 27th & 28th May at COIMBATORE where the Club Chairs of Club

Administration, Public Relations, Service Projects, International Service, Membership Development and Rotary Foundation were given hands-on training to go forth and serve. The Assembly also had a special training session for the Governors Group Representatives. The Sgt - At - Arms and the Club Secretaries were also given detailed information about reporting and use of

various sites at district and international levels. The program had a record attendance and was appreciated by one and all. All the credit goes to the excellent coordination of the District Secretariat, District Directors, Assistant Governors, Governors Group Representatives and Team SADAS.The effects of the training programs could be gauged at the installation of the District Governor on 2nd July 2017, where for the first time 130 out of 137 Presidents Elects of our District were installed together at a colorful ceremony at Vadakkencherry, Palakkad.I should thank all - the chairman and members of the organizing committees, host clubs of all the training programs-who have meticulously and sincerely worked for the successful conduct and completion of each seminar, especially on time

management. I personally thank each one of you. A special thanks to all District Directors, Assistant Governors, Governors Group Representatives without whose sustained efforts these programs would never have been so well represented and conducted. No amount of gratitude will be enough for Past District Governors Rtn. Sunil K Zachariah and Rtn. Adv. Baby Joseph, both with rich experience in conducting such programs, who have been instrumental in guiding and advising me in my maiden assignment as a District Trainer. I hope, I have lived up to their expectations. I am deeply indebted to our training coordinator Rtn. PP B. Balagopal, DRFC Rtn. R. Jayasankar, Web Master Rtn. PP E. M. Varghese, District Chair Rtn. Dr. G. N. Ramesh, Rtn. Jojoe and the District Training Team for their unstinted and dedicated teamwork and for being there when it mattered. The District Secretariat led by District General Secretary, the one

and only Rtn. Col. V. K. Prabhakaran (Retd.), has worked hand in hand in conducting each and every program successfully. Special appreciation for the prompt and excellent communication. Finally I should be grateful to our simple and elegant Governor Vinod K Kutty for reposing his confidence in me for assigning me as the District Trainer and for giving me a free hand to go ahead with all the programs. I have done all possible to keep up the image and decorum of our District and Rotary International, the organization I am proud to be associated with. May God bless you to lead our District to unparalleled heights and I assure you my support in all your endeavors.Thank you one and all. Let us now go ahead, work together in a SIMPLE AND ELEGANT manner, to serve humanity and MAKE THE DIFFERENCE in the world.

Water Projects of R C Kalladikkode

DG inaugurated Rotary Club of Kalladikkode’s water projects in two schools. The project was recharging of ground water level by using storm water sent back into the well after chemical filtration.

It also provided a kiosk with pure drinking water using RO techniques on the main highway. Any traveler on this highway can avail of this drinking water facility day and night free of cost.

Tackling Water Woes

Students of SCMS Engineering College, aided by the Rotary Club of Cochin Milan, conducted a survey at the Mankaikadavu fisher-men colony, which suffers from

water problems. The house - to – house survey assessed water quality in the colony, which is home to 100 economically backward families living on the banks of

Vembanad Lake near Udayamperoor in Ernakulam district. They found that semi-saline water from the lake intrudes into the aquifers of open domestic wells in Mankaikadavu, thereby affecting the water quality of the area. The students found that the Kerala Water authority provides water to 37 families. However, this water was available only for a few hours, every two weeks. As a result, most of the families purchase water sold by private suppliers in tanker lorries at a hefty price. The students had a larger objective in mind.

“We wanted to prepare a proposal to provide purified drinking water to serve the basic water needs of the 100 families residing at Mankaikadavu fishermen colony. SCMS Water Institute, an expert in designing such drinking water supply systems, has agreed to provide all the technical support for this project to Rotary Club of Cochin Milan,” they said. In turn, the Rotary Club is doing its best to generate funds in order to help provide drinking water to this colony.
