January, 2020
The month of December brought out the generous nature of the Wainfleet community. We were over-
whelmed by the amount of donations that families made to our Christmas Basket Raffle and our Giving Tree.
Thank you for supporting our school and charity organizations in our area. Our turkey dinner on the last day
of school was, once again, a huge success. We want to thank the many families who donated items for the
meal as well as the many volunteers who prepared, served and tidied up on the last day of school. The food
was delicious and our students were very appreciative. WEB Cares Club was also busy this month caroling at
the Northland Point Nursing Home. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the singing and our students were
amazing with the residents. Thank you Mrs. Gooderham and Mr. Haining for assisting with this event.

We are sad to say “goodbye” to Mrs. Bartlett who has worked as an Educational
Assistant at WEB for many years. She works with students in most of our 10
classes so everyone knows and loves Mrs. Bartlett. We have appreciated her
willingness to go above and beyond for our students, staff and families. She
has been actively involved with our WEB Cares club and she will be missed. We
want to wish Mrs. Bartlett all the best as she moves to a system role assisting
EAs across DSBN be as successful as possible. We miss you already!

MAD SCIENCE IS COMING TO WEB IN JANUARY!
Our boys and girls triple ball teams have fin-
ished their seasons with much success. Great big
thanks goes to Mr. Haining, Mr. Bronn and Ms.
Mason for volunteering to coach these teams.
Intermediate boys and girls basketball be-
gins in January. Mr. Clark is acting as coach for
both teams and is the convener for the league as
well. Good luck badgers.
SPORTS UPDATE
Skating is just around the corner. Students in JK
to grade 8 will be given four opportunities to go skat-
ing at the Wainfleet arena. We will be going every
Thursday during the month of February. Please take
some time this month to acquire the necessary equip-
ment to send your child skating. Although we have
some skates and helmets to borrow, we don’t always
have enough or the right sizes. All students and adult
must wear a helmet.
Mad Science, the world’s leading provider of educational and entertaining science programs for children is coming to William E Brown School! They will be getting kids excited about science with fun, entertaining and exciting activities and demonstrations.
Students and teachers will be thrilled on 10/Jan/2020 when Mad Science comes to the school to do a Spec-
tacular Science show. The assembly will be educational, entertaining and also the kick off to the Mad Science
Club. The Club is a 6-week science enrichment program offered to the students. Students who join the Sci-
ence Club will go on a voyage of discovery designed to support the Ontario Science and Technology curricu-
lum. The topics will be different this year than when Mad Science was last at the school. The Club will take
place on Wednesday, Jan 22, 29, Feb 5, 12, 19, 26 from 10:45 AM - 11:25 AM. Mad Science also performs
Birthday Parties, Camps and Special Events. Give them a call at 905-937-1878 and watch out for them in
Malls, at Fairs, Festivals and Scouts and Guides.
TRY AT HOME ACTIVITY - ZOOM BALL
Materials:
Two 1 litre plastic pop bottles, scissors, optional: Coloured construction paper, masking tape, ribbons, two
plastic ring six pack holders, two 2.4 meter strings, an adult helper
1. Ask your adult helper to cut the bottoms off of the two plastic pop bottles.
2. Fit the bottles together so there is a neck on either end. Tape the bottles together to form a football shape.
3. Cover the bottles with construction paper and ribbon if you want to decorate your zoom ball.
5. Take the six-pack holders and cut the rings apart to make four two-loop handles.
4. Thread the two strings through the bottles.
5. Tie a set of handles to the ends of each string.
6. Get a friend and you are ready to play. Each player holds onto two handles and pulls on the strings until
they are tight. Slide the zoom ball to one end. When it is at your end snap your hands apart to send the zoom
ball back to your friend. To catch the zoom ball, keep your hands together.
EXPLANATION:
The pushing action of the strings sets the zoom ball in motion. When the zoom ball reaches the other end of the strings, an opposite pushing action, your friend snapping the strings, stops the ball for a moment and then sends it in the reverse direction.

Never before has there been such a wealth of knowledge available right at our fingertips. Did you know that
over half of elementary aged students own a smartphone? Students must develop the skills to manage screen
time appropriately in order to live healthy, balanced lives.
The Ice Dogs Screen Smart Challenge encourages students to choose active time over screen time. Our Ice
Dog Challenge this month will be for students to take time off from screen time and engage in some indoor
and outdoor play. This could include playing board or card games at home or enjoying the snow outside. More
information will be coming home with your child.
ICE DOGS SCREEN SMART CHALLENGE
START THE YEAR WITH CLEAR VISION
Children who have trouble seeing may struggle to learn and take part in activities at school. Children are of-
ten unaware of their own vision problems, so many issues can go unnoticed and untreated. If untreated, some
vision problems may affect a child’s vision for life.
Eye exams with an optometrist are important to identify and treat any possible vision issues. Yearly eye ex-
ams are free for anyone under 20 with a valid OHIP card. Families can find eye doctors in their com-
munity by visiting findaneyedoctor.ca
APP OF THE MONTH - DUOLINGO
Duolingo is a fun language learning app. You are able to use it as a mobile app or web.
With a few minutes a day, everyone can Duolingo. Learn 30+ languages online with bite
-size lessons based on science. Students in grades 4-8 have been introduced to this app
in the Core French classes. Be sure to check it out!
DSBN ACADEMY OPEN HOUSE
The DSBN Academy is located in St. Catharines with the mandate to assist fami-
lies whose parents did not graduate from college or university. It is a great op-
portunity for students to receive additional support and structure to be success-
ful in their elementary and high school education. The school begins at grade 6
and goes to grade 12. Graduates are assisted in finding additional funding to
help cover college/university costs when they are accepted into a post-
secondary institution. There is an Open House happening on Monday,
January 20 from 6:00—7:30 pm. Please take the time to attend if you
think this might be a viable option for your child. A presentation will be happen-
ing for our grade 5 & 6 students during the first week of December.
PRIMARY HOME READING PROGRAM
Parents/guardians of primary students may have noticed that your children are bringing home new books as
part of their home reading program. These books were purchased by the funds from the School Council. We
want to encourage you to read with your child every night. Below is an outline of things you can do with your
child before, during and after reading. For our beginning readers, you can also ask your child to find letters
of the alphabet and their sound, as well as little words inside of big words. For example a child may find the
word “in” inside the work “spin”.
Questions to ask before reading:
What do you think this book is about?
Have you read anything else by this author?
What do you think this book will be like?
After looking at the picture on the front cover and the pictures within the book, what do you think the book will be about now?
Questions to ask during reading:
Pause in the book and ask, what do you think will
happen next?
Why did a character do that?
How do you feel about a certain character?
See if you can find links between this book and your-
self?
Questions to ask after reading:
Was there a character you liked best? Why?
Why do you think a character did . . . ?
Was there a part of the book you liked? Why?
Does this remind you of another book? How?
Have you ever felt like the character in the book?

INCLEMENT WEATHER
There may be times during the school year where inclement weather or other situations could cause transpor-
tation cancellations or school closures.
At times when student transportation has been cancelled and schools remain open, the decision of whether or
not to have children in school on that day rests with the parent or guardian.
Should you decide not to send your child to school in the event that transportation is cancelled
but schools remain open, or if your child is ill or late, please ensure that you report through
SafeArrival or call your child’s school to inform them of your child’s absence.
A key resource in any emergency is the DSBN Emergency Information form that you filled out at the begin-
ning of the school year. Please let the school know of any changes in contact information or procedures you
wish to be followed throughout the school year. For secondary schools it may become necessary to cancel late
buses. Notice will be provided via school announcements and on the websites and subscription features by
11:30 a.m.
Information about transportation cancellations and school closures will be available as soon as it is available
through the following channels:
