Mood disorders are commonly seen in the elderly who are often suffering from chronic health

conditions, loss of independance and loneliness.

your health - MOOD DISORDERS

TALK ON MOOD DISORDERSFriday 26 JULY 10:00 – RP1 Hall

Speaker: Colette Jansen van Vuuren

A mood disorder may be mild or severe and includes depression, hypomania, or mania, or their combination. Some of the major symptoms of mood disorders are personality change, aggression, and loss of appetite, exhaustion, depression, agitation and anxiety. The major causes of mood disorders are imbalance in brain chemicals, financial strain, prolonged illness, relationship problems, chronic health problems, poor family relations and death of a beloved one. The main categories of mood disorder is Unipolar (Major Depression) and Bipolar disorder (Manic Depression). Unipolar – Major Depression is medical condition that affects people of all genders, races, ages, and income levels. People who have clinical depression feel more than sadness or “the blues.” They can feel hopeless and suffer deep emotional pain for prolonged periods. Depression can cause dysfunction in every aspect of one’s life. Major depression is the most commonly diagnosed depression. It tends to be episodic, but

can persistently recur. For diagnosis, symptoms must persist for at least two weeks; however, if the symptoms are affecting the person’s ability to function or if self-injury or thoughts of suicide are involved, seek help immediately. Mood disorders are a treatable medical condition. With appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and support, most people struggling with mood disorders will get better.Bipolar – Manic Depression is a mood disorder in which a person experiences periods of depression, periods of elevated moods (whether elated or irritable) and increased energy, periods of no symptoms, and – for some – mixed states with symptoms of depression and symptoms of mania simultaneously. These mood cycles can last for as short as hours and as long as months. Bipolar disorder can be mild to severe. This mental health condition runs in families: more than two-thirds of people with bipolar disorder have at least one close relative with a mood disorder.Anxiety disorders are a group of mental disorders characterized by significant feelings of anxiety and fear. Anxiety is a worry about future events, and fear is a reaction to current

events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a fast heart rate and shakiness. There are several anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, panic disorder, and selective mutism. The disorder differs by what results in the symptoms. People often have more than one anxiety disorder.

GARDEN CLUBBy Sandra Jakobi

Geraldine Postles from Rynpark 2 gave many useful tips on gardening, especially on taking cuttings of pelagoniums and general care of them. These four steps to achievement go hand in hand with gardening:1. Plan purposefully; 2. Prepare prayerfully;3. Proceed positively and 4. Pursue persistently.

TIPS FOR JULY– As the first frosts have hit us, marking the arrival of winter, we need to do one

of the simpler tasks and that is to get out our pruning shears and sharpen them now in time for our pruning at the end of the month into August.

– You don’t want to cut back your perennials and shrubs with a dull blade as you run the risk of injuring the plants which might make them susceptible to disease.

– For any new roses you might want to add to your garden, prepare by digging your holes and filling them with a good mix of compost. This is the only time you dig around roses. A good rose to plant for fragrance is the David Austin Roses – they flower all summer releasing their scents in the early morning.

– At the end of the month cut back hydrangeas and fushias that have flowered. Reduce them by half or two-thirds of their length and remove all diseased dead or damaged growth, but not if we have heavy frost.

– Keep watering bulbs and feed with a liquid fertilizer like Nitrosol every two weeks.

– Winter flowering Aloes will add instant colour and attract birds – visit the garden at Rynhaven Hall and see the sunbirds.

– Continue feeding and deadheading annuals like pansies and primulas. Get the most out of your blooms by feeding your plants regularly with a fertilizer high in potassium to encourage flower growth. A great product for this is “Multifeed Flowergro”.

– Now is the time to view Succulents at their best. Many have coloured flowers but even those that don’t are equally pretty as their foliage colours intensify.

(Gehoorverlies)

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me, and I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves, and satin sandals, and say I’ve no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired, and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells, and run my stick along the public railings, and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain, and pick the flowers in other people’s gardens, and learn to spit.

Voted Britain’s favourite poem in 1996, “Warning” written in 1961, is known and loved the world over. Its a declaration of defiance and appeals to the rebel in all of us.

I can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat, and eat three pounds of sausages at a go, or only bread and pickle for a week, and hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now I must have clothes that keep me dry, and pay my rent and not swear in the street, and set a good example for the children, I must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practise a little now! So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised, when suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Oordenking/Meditation by Jan Lubbe

– AMEN

FOLLOW JESUSIf you want to follow Jesus, you must suppress your own desires at the expence of other people. What do you desire? Do you desire faith, hope and love? Then you must spread the gospel of Faith, Hope and Love to all you meet. Tell all people that Jesus died for our sins, has risen and now sits at the righthand side of the Father to plead for us. That He is busy preparing our heavenly home and will come and fetch us when our home is ready. If you do not spread this word, you belittle the gospel of Jesus. For what will it profit a person if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Take up your cross and follow Jesus! – AMEN

The PilotA Sunday school teacher told the pupils to make a sketch depicting the Holy Nativity. One youngster drew a small aircraft with a woman in the back seat with a baby on her lap. The teacher asked him who the lady was. It is Mother Mary with the baby Jesus, he replied. And who is the man in the front seat?, she asked. Oh!, he said, it is Pontius, the Pilot.
