Certified Quality SystemThe IMPER Division never loses sight of itsgoal: ensuring that the products it suppliesfor protecting buildings and other infrastruc-tures from water come up to the customer’sexpectations in every respect.

This is a goal that dates back to the compa-ny’s foundation in 1936. Since then, howsuccessful the company has been in meetingthis goal – and the outstanding performan-ce of its products – are borne out by themany European Technical Approval certifi-cates issued and renewed by the ITC (theItalian National Research Council’s Instituteof Construction Technologies, formerlyknown as the ICITE) and by the nationalmember organizations of the UEAtc (UnionEuropéenne pour l’Agrément Tecnique dansla Construction), including CSTB in France,BBA in the United Kingdom, IAB in Ireland,BDA KOMO in the Netherlands, andBelgium’s UBAtc.

In addition, the Division’s product’s have beenapproved and certified by international orga-nizations such as EMI (Hungary), JIS (Japan),BRANZ (New Zealand), Factory MutualSystem (USA), Bureau Veritas (France),SOCOTEC (France), ZUS (Czech Republic),TSUS (Slovak Republic), TSE (Turkey), ZAG(Croatia), Laboratoire Central Ponts etChaussées (France), Italian State Railways, theItalian National Highway Administration, andmany others.

At the root of this international recognition isthe Division’s quality system, or in other wordsthe set of planned, systematic activities whichassure that production methods satisfy specificrequirements. The quality system thus servesas a guarantee of the company’s reliability.

UNI EN ISO 9001, the reference standardfor quality management, establishes thequality requirements for desi-gn/development, production and servicingthat the WATERPROOFING BUSINESSUNIT (Mappano Plant), where the IMPERDivision’s products are manufactured, satis-fies so successfully.

Everyone at IMPER has specific responsibili-ties for implementing and improving qualitystandards, with top management settinggoals, middle management overseeing qualitysystem management, and plant personneloptimizing manufacturing processes. The quality system implemented at themembrane production plant is certified tocomply with UNI EN ISO 9001 by BureauVeritas Quality International.

THE QUALITY ON WATERPROOFINGAchieving long-lasting waterproofing per-formance is a question of starting from awell executed design, using quality productsand entrusting the job to installers who canbe relied upon to follow the manufacturer’sdirections (see the section covering gener-al application instructions in DATAQUAD2000) and the accepted codes of practicethat establish standards for workmanship.

During membrane manufacturing, rawmaterials must be continually monitoredand, given their variety and variability, com-pound formulations must be constantlyadapted to the materials that are available atany given time. This calls for a wealth ofexperience and know-how, the support of afully equipped laboratory, and efficient pro-duction systems and processes that imple-ment appropriate controls. Above all, it callsfor a deep-seated commitment to quality. There are a number of common miscon-ceptions about waterproofing membranes. One such misconception, for example, con-cerns the weight per square meter of the

non-woven polyester fabrics used for rein-forcement purposes. In fact, the weight ofthis reinforcement is irrelevant, as qualitymust be gauged on the basis of the entirecombination of mechanical performanceparameters. These parameters are notlinked to weight, but to the processing tech-niques and composition of the reinforce-ment, in synergy with the bitumen-polymercompound with which it is co-extruded.

Another common misconception consistsof confusing the “cold flexibility” of bitu-men-polymer membranes with their abilityto resist cracking during installation at lowtemperatures.“Cold flexibility” is determined in the labo-ratory under test conditions established byEN standards. The cold flexibility deter-mined on the same product or on differentproducts can thus be compared, but has nodirect influence on whether or not mem-branes will crack when they are unrolled atthe installation site under differing temper-ature conditions. This is because the conditions encounteredwhen membranes are unrolled at the site

are much more severe than those used intesting, and are completely unrepeatable. In addition, rolls may be stored outdoors atlow temperatures for weeks at a time, anda few hours in the sun are not enough toensure that the entire roll – including theinnermost parts – reaches the recom-mended minimum application temperatureof 5 °C. And during installation, membranesare often unrolled very quickly (by kickingthe rolls, for instance). As one of the factors which is most impor-tant to the success of a waterproofing proj-ect is correct design, it is essential to usewaterproofing/insulation systems that areappropriate for the type of structure con-cerned – without neglecting such details asdrains, joints, steps, etc., in the surroundingareas. Finally, installation quality is an importantconsideration, as product performancedepends to a large extent on the installer’sskill at controlling the gas torch flame andsealing joins between sheets, and at ensur-ing that all flashing areas around the mem-brane are leak-free.

6

“Agréments”: quality certificatesAt first glance, all manufacturers’ water-proofing membranes look pretty muchthe same. They differ considerably, how-ever, as regards reliability, or in otherwords their ability to maintain theiroriginal characteristics for years afterinstallation, with a minimum amount ofdeterioration.

Now, choosing the best membranes iseasier, thanks to the “European TechnicalApproval Certificate” (Agrément tech-nique) issued by the official memberorganizations of the UEAtc (UnionEuropéenne pour l’Agrément techniquedans la construction), which consists ofrepresentative institutes from elevenEuropean countries.

The UEAtc issues directives coveringtest methods and performance require-ments, as well as installation techniques, thus providing a standardized approachfor assessing the quality of prefabricat-ed bitumen-polymer membranes and

many other innovative constructionmaterials.

The Italian member of the UEAtc is theITC (the National Research Council’sInstitute of Construction Technologies, for-merly known as the ICITE). As a service tomanufacturers, this Institute takes samplesof products in actual service and investi-gates their performance over time. It alsoperforms laboratory tests on samples ofnew products taken from production orstock, on products that have been exposedto extended service, and on samples takendirectly at the installation site. Through anextensive, complex process, the ITC canthus determine whether the product trulycomplies with the sample.

The Agrément certificate will be issuedto the manufacturer only after all of thechecks envisaged by this procedure havebeen carried out. And these checks arerepeated without advance warning forthe entire five-year period that the cer-tificate remains valid.

When the certificate expires, the pro-cedure starts all over again. Once anItalian Agrément certificate has beenobtained, the manufacturer can apply tohave it confirmed by UEAtc memberorganizations in other countries.

Quality that extends to serviceAs the performance-related quality ofwaterproofing membranes also dependson how they are installed, the IMPERDivision maintains a customer servicedepartment staffed by specialists in designand installation techniques. The customer service department fulfils avariety of functions: solving tricky water-proofing problems, developing new prod-ucts, research, performing diagnostic sitesurveys, training installers (at theMappano Plant’s Training Center), provid-ing designers with up-to-the-minuteinformation, and working out cost-effec-tive technological systems and solutionsfor special construction sites.

THE PRODUCTS

The IMPER Division markets a wide rangeof waterproofing products: from prefabri-cated bitumen-polymer membranes tosynthetic liquid-applied waterproofing ma -te rials, bituminous emulsi ons and bondedmulti-layer insulating systems.

Bitumen-polymer membranesMore and more countries have issuedconstruction regulations mandating theuse of materials with specific technicalcharacteristics and performance featureswhich have been checked and certifiedby official institutes.

A significant number of the IMPERDivision’s membranes have been certi-fied in many countries around the world, testifying to the high quality of the divi-sion’s products.

The IMPER Division’s membrane produc-tion plant is certified to comply with ISO

9001, guaranteeing consistent high quali-ty in all manufacturing processes. The range of prefabricated bitumen-polymer membranes includes:

• Membranes with plastomeric polymermodifying compounds (atacticpolypropylene, or APP), supplied blackor self-protected with slate chippingsand reinforced with non-woven poly-ester fabric (stabilized versions alsoavailable) or glass tissue.

• Membranes with elastomeric polymermodifying compounds (styrene-butadi-ene-styrene, or SBS), supplied black orself-protected with slate chippings ormetal foil and reinforced with non-woven polyester fabric or glass tissue.

• Membranes with PARALLOY® metal-locene resin based elasto-plastomericcompound, which combines the best fea-tures of SBS and APP compounds.PARALLOY® compound is used in twodifferent product ranges: PARALONPLUS and PARALON FIRE. In the latter

range, PARALLOY‚ is blended with spe-cial additives which increase the mem-brane’s fire resistance and make it self-extinguishing.The co-extruded reinforcement consistseither of compact, spun-bond non-wovenpolyester fabric, or of stabilized non-woven polyester fabric.Membranes are available in black or slatesurfaced versions.

Recommended usesThe range covers all waterproofingneeds for :• All kinds of roofing• Foundations, below-grade structures

SLATE GRANULE SURFACINGSlate surfacing is a treatment that pro-vides the membrane with additional,built-in protection by bonding gradedand sized natural slate chippings to theupper face during the productionprocess. A special ceramization processensures that the mineral pigments usedto tint the slate chippings are long-last-ing. Standard colors include naturalgray, red and green, while other colorsare available on request.

ALUMINIUM FOILARWENOL AL Series membranes featurean attractive surface finish produced byadhesive bonding a herringbone-patternedembossed aluminium foil layer to themembrane’s upper face. The embossedpattern is also designed to compensate forthermal movements on the part of themembrane and the aluminium foil, whichtake place at different rates. Available col-ors include natural aluminium, copper, redand green.

REFLECTA®

REFLECTA® is a heat-reflecting aluminumtreatment applied on a thermoplasticfilm. The REFLECTA® treatment is usedon SELECTA Series membranes, and isoptionally available on other products. The REFLECTA® treatment:

• Provides an attractive bright aluminumfinish which improves roll appearance.

• Reduces the temperature of rollsstored outdoors in direct sunlight byas much as 30 °C, helping the com-pound maintain its original adhesionproperties.

• Protects the membrane during flamebonding: the compound melts suffi-ciently to adhere to the substratewithout charring or other deterio-ration.

SURFACE TREATMENTSBitumen-polymer membranes can be supplied with upper and lower faces treated with a variety of surface finishes, depending onproduct and application requirements.

TERMOTÈNE®

TERMOTENE® is a thermoplastic filmwhose use in combination with bitumen-polymer membranes was patented byIMPER ITALIA as long ago as 1977. The TERMOTENE® treatment is normal-ly applied to the membrane’s lower face, though in some cases it is used on bothupper and lower faces. The TERMOTENE® treatment:

• Makes rolls easier to unroll

• Improves membrane adhesion to thesubstrate

• Reduces the amount of gas needed tomelt the compound

• Ensures that work sites are cleaner, neater and hence safer, as polyethyl-ene release sheets and large amountsof talc are no longer needed to keepmembrane surfaces from sticking.

TEXTENE®

TEXTENE® is a high value-added surfacefinish produced using a special process inwhich the membrane surface is coatedwith a layer of preformed textured poly-mer fiber film. The TEXTENE® treatmentis normally applied to the membrane’supper face, though in some cases it isused on both upper and lower faces. The TEXTENE® treatment improves:

• Appearance, as TEXTENE® gives themembrane a velvety smooth surface.

• Environmental impact: As they aretalc-free, TEXTENE® treated mem-branes are cleaner to work with andrelease less dust into the environment.

• Performance: The TEX-TENE®treatment improves membraneperformance, particularly as regardswaterproofing durability, ease of torchapplication, sheet strength and tearresistance, ability to bear foot trafficduring installation and paintability.

With their outstanding technical merits,PARALON waterproofing membraneshave been a byword for reliable per-formance and durability for over 25years. The new ITC Agrément certificatenow covers the entire PARALON rangeof products designed to meet the mostwidely varying design and applicationneeds. Certification covers both the clas-sic talc-treated and slate surfaced mem-branes, as well as those featuring IMPER’sTEXTENE® surface finish.

• The first Agrément certificate issued foran entire product series: the PARALONrange rather than a single product.

• The first Agrément certificate coveringfire resistant roofing products.

• The first Agrément certificate coveringproducts with different types of rein-forcement: classic continuous filamentpolyester fabric, stabilized continuous fil-ament polyester fabric, and composite.

• The first Agrément certificate coveringboth 3 mm and 4 mm thick versions.

PARALON Series products are pro-duced from a special compound calledPARALLOY®, which consists of metal-locene based resins of selected molecu-lar weight dispersed in bitumen, and isco-extruded with a compact, spun-bondnon-woven continuous filament poly-ester fabric reinforcing mat. In certainproducts, the reinforcing mat is stabilizedwith glass fiber. The lower face is protect-ed by "Termotene" hot-melt film, whichfacilitates application and improves mem-brane adhesion to the substrate to bewaterproofed. The PARALLOY® compound combinesall of the advantages of SBS and APPcompounds.

MEMBRANES FOR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS

Product descriptionPerforated bitumen-polymer mem-brane with reinforced glass tissue matfor use as an intermediate ply in par-tially bonded built-up waterproofingapplications. Upper and lower facesare coated with adhesion-inhibitingTERMOTENE film.

Recommended usesDesigned for partial bonding in built-upwaterproofing systems, MULTIHOLESS/40 membrane is ideal for use as a:

• Vapor control layer• Venting sheet.

MULTIHOLES S/40 membrane is loose-laid under the subsequent waterproofingply, which is then bonded to it only at thepoints established by the spaced holes.Benefits are as follows:

• Spot-bonded waterproofing mem-brane is able to distribute the stressescaused by thermal expansion andsubstrate settling more uniformly.

• The spaces formed between MULTI-HOLES S/40 membrane and thewaterproofing ply relieve the vaporpressure that builds up as trappedwater evaporates.

Using MULTIHOLES S/40 under thewaterproofing ply is essential when oldroofing systems must be renewed andrejuvenated without removing them.

Product descriptionBitumen-polymer membrane for specialapplications. UNOFIX 300 prefabricatedmembrane is produced by bonding abitumen-polymer compound with anon-woven polyester fabric reinforcingmat, which constitutes the membrane'slower face.

This reinforcing mat ensures thatmechanical strength is significantly high-er than that of the products normallyused for the same purpose.

SELF-ADHESIVE WATERPROOFING SYSTEMS

Tradition moves ahead

There was a time when prefabricated bitu-men-polymer waterproofing membranescould not be used on combustible substra-tes such as wood and synthetic insulationor in other areas where open-flame tor-ching would pose a risk. No longer IMPER ITALIA SpA, technologyhas solved the problem of combining relia-ble waterproofing and fire safety with ininnovative line of high performance self-adhesive membranes designed for flamefree installation: the STICKER Series. STICKER is a thick self-adhesive prefabrica-

ted waterproofing membrane produced byco-extruding layers of special bitumenbased compounds modified with elasto-thermoplastic polymers with a non-wovencomposite polyester reinforcing mat loca-ted midway through the membrane’s thick-ness and acting in total synergy with thewaterproofing compound. The membrane’s lower face is treated withspecial adhesion-promoting additives thatguarantee a tenacious bond between thebituminous compound and the substrate, and is backed with a silicone-treated relea-se liner which is removed at the time ofapplication.

THERMAL INSULATION BOARDS

ERABOARD Rigid nonflammable expanded perliteinsulation boards. Biologically inert,ERABOARD insulation boards do notemit gases or toxic substances, and donot allow static electricity to build up.Thanks to the high standards observedin the manufacturing process and theoutstanding technical features and per-formance provided by the finished prod-uct, ERABOARD insulation boards com-ply with CE marking requirements(Certificate of Conformity No. 1163 –CPD – 0035).In the United States, ERABOARD insu-lation boards have been approved byFactory Mutual for use as thermal insu-lation under built-up waterproofing sys-tems with IMPER bitumen-polymermembranes. In addition to the standardERABOARD version, the range alsoincludes the ERABOARD S version, whose upper face is coated with blownbitumen and covered with burn-off film toensure that torch-applied bitumen-poly-mer membranes are easier to bond to theboard and adhere more effectively.
