School is out, graduations are over, and the excitement is extreme for some young people who are relocating to their new schools, maybe to a dorm, or a new way of life, nonetheless, the result is the same, they are moving on.

in short, the changes and experiences that Summer brings are exciting transitions to new challenges: a new school, a new city, a new school year to start.

parents at home cannot stop yearning for their little child, who is now a grown person and is ready to conquer the world. it is really hard to believe how fast years go by!

hot, hot, hot chronicles to read... this is what summer brings!

in our feature Story, carolina davalos shares her first emotions of be-coming a new mother. She says: “life will never be the same. nothing would be possible if i did not have this great love for my child.” And it is true; the love for our children and our family is what really keeps us grounded and truly alive.

therefore, please take a moment to cherish the candid smile of a child, the happiness that his laughter brings, and enjoy that little voice that resonates in your heart when saying, “Mom!”

i am a mother and i can tell you, when i am in a public place and hear those voices calling, “Mom,” i can only imagine that my own children are calling for me! i love my family!

When Carmen Ramírez came to Oxnard 30 years ago to join Rural Legal Aid and work with people with low resources on legal issues, the idea of becoming a may-oral candidate was far from her mind. Ramirez and council women Dr. Irene Pinkard are seeking the hot seat current-ly held by Tom Holden.

A confident soft-spoken attorney who speaks volumes with the force of her ideas, she recently decided that it was time to step up from her City Council seat and seek Oxnard’s top post.

This is not the first time Ramírez tack-les issues that concern people she works with.

She came from a working class barrio in Los Angeles, earned high grades to at-tend UC San Francisco, and graduated with high marks from Loyola University law school in LA.

Once graduated, she could have contin-ued “with a comfortable, high paying job within the California Court System,” but

she had other ideas that involved public service. Then it was when she chose to come to Oxnard and work with Rural Le-gal Aid.

“That is when I became a community activist. I became involved in the move-ment to keep the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal off Oxnard. It had been rejected in many other areas along the coast including Santa Barbara, because of environmental and safety concerns.” Area residents rallied to her cause, and even-tually voters in the area elected her to a seat in the Council.

Her eyes soften and a smile comes to her lips, “I am glad I was able to work with the people of the area...”

In town, all you have to say is her first name, ‘Carmen,’ and everyone knows who you are talking about. Her sharp at-torney’s mind and her quiet yet forceful voice is a quality to be reckoned in a town where ethnic or gender politics are not usual subjects of polite conversation.

“My vision for Oxnard is to have a safe and clean city. We are now more than 200,000 (people) in this city and it is time for Oxnard to have “ its place as the large city that it is.”

Considering recent education cuts, she shared her vision about how she would like city programs to partner with schools and after school programs to help young people stay out of trouble.

Ramírez is married to architect Roy Price. “My biggest regret is having no children,” she commented with a touch of sadness in her voice. But, she aims at assuring the future of Oxnard’s children. As a busy professional woman, Ramirez looks back at her child home in San Ga-briel Valley, with nostalgia she shares. “My mother never had time for a profes-sion; her full time job was us seven chil-dren”. She says, “My dad always worked overtime to bring food to the table. His job eventually was the cause of his death; he painted railroad trucks and heavy ma-chinery with thick protective paint to pro-tect the metals from rusting. Eventually he acquired lead poison. That is why for me, creating consciousness and caring for the environment is a top priority.”

Even though a Latino, Dr. Manuel Lopez, held the helm of post in Oxnard a few years ago, she could be the first Latina mayor, or alcaldesa, to head the larg-est city in Ventura County. Her election could be a milestone for Oxnard. “I have the experience and the leadership to ac-complish this,” she concluded.

POLITICAL PLATFORMfor 2012

ELECTIOns

Summer 2012 | 9

With unemployment above eight percent, the deficit again above $1 trillion, troops still in Afghanistan, and Health Law that will have to wait until 2014 to be fully up and running, an incredible hard task for Presi-dent Barack Obama -who seeks a second term- is ahead.

Top advisors are brainstorming for his 2012 strategy. They try to figure out a way to make his

controversial accomplishments visible, and hence, reestablish trust in both, the moderate and the democratic base.

On the other hand, a Republican Preamble declares that their platform endures principle, not convenience, as it states, “We offer it to our fellow Americans in the assurance that our Republican ideals are those that unify our country: Courage in the face of foreign foes; and an optimistic patriotism, driven by a passion for freedom.”

RE/MAX Gold Coast Realtors has proudly announced signing a 10 year lease on a large office space at 5720 Ralston St #100 Ventura CA in the City Center, timing is perfect after also signing a10 yr extension with RE/MAX International Tenant improvements are underway and are on pace to be completed in time for the highly anticipated move in date of July 1, 2012. After unveiling the 3d virtual tour a few months back at their monthly office meeting , RE/MAX Gold Coast agents are eager to make their way to their new home away from home at its new location! The space has all the technological elements to stay a step ahead of the industry & market demands while maintaining a comfortable home like feel. The new space addresses the needs of today’s agent, the mo-bile agent, as well as the more tradi-tional agent! RE/MAX Gold Coast has and continues to be a trend setter in West Ventura County and prides itself on the character of its agents and its ability to thrive in the market despite any and all market conditions. They are truly proud of their long time #1 standing in West Ventura County! Briana Bouffard, Career Development Director, says “RE/MAX Gold Coast is the place to be! People can be resistant to change for fear of the unknown, however change means growth and growth is

our focus. The technology tools and support here cannot be beat! I’m so fortunate to be a part of team whose great reputation speaks for itself!” Broker/owner Michael Sipes spent a large amount of time researching po-tential space designs and is exciting for the unveiling! ”This is the office of the future, it has been a privilege to not only to be a part of the process but to watch it unfold every step of the way. The agents and consumers alike are going to be thrilled with the new space. This office is a dream come true.” This past Wednesday June 13, 2012, Sipes and Bouffard hosted a “Grand Preview” of the new office for their agents. Although still in the final stages of construction, the agents and staff alike were ecstatic about the new space. Agents were asked to bring their hard hats and enthusi-asm and great ideas, which they did!. Agents were seen all over the office with measuring tapes, discussing decorating ideas, buzzing with ex-citement. Sipes stated, “The agents mean everything to this company and to myself. The energy was very positive, and our agents were able to look past the construction and clear-ly visualize themselves in productive new space. I am very pleased!”

They had planned his room and the colors on the walls. She planned how their relationship with their

son should be. However despite the desire to have a little boy, Carolina felt strange when people talked to her during her pregnancy assuming the child was a boy: “It made me upset, and did not understand why I felt that way, I knew that I wanted a boy.” When the doctor told her that she was expecting a girl,

that was the moment of bliss. That was the first time she cried. It was only then when she realized that she wanted a baby girl so bad that she was afraid to even admit it to her-self. “Deep down I always wanted a girl. And now I want another child, “ she laughs.

With tenderness and candor Carolina confesses she is now more in love with her husband than ever. Since their pregnancy started, it has been a rediscovery between them. She was reunited with her partner and unconditional friend. Claramente, La Mejor Opción Para Su Salud

there is a classic hollywood charm in the air as the eager diner opens the door of the Mupu Grill in downtown Santa paula. the fare is typically hollywood Americana with succulent porterhouse steaks, fresh crisp salads and scrumptious sandwiches.

the atmosphere is nostalgic, the visitor can see photos of movie stars and even presidents. At the same time there is a feeling of déjà vu – as if you have seen this place before but cannot quite place it. the answer comes as the operator, bill Shiells, a kind man with a congenial smile and charm, explains how the Mupu Grill got its mojo.

“the simple elegant furniture is no ordinary furniture, it came from chasen’s restaurant in beverly hills and many actors and actresses used to sit at these booths and tables,” he pointed out with unabashed pride. “the booths have numbers and some of these stars used to request their favorite booth to sit at,” Shiells noted opening his arms to the spacious dining room. “As a matter of fact, ronald reagan proposed to nancy in one of these booths and that booth is now at the reagan library…or could be at Mupu Grill.

“the building has stood here for a long time and it has been a restaurant for more than 60 years. it was named after the Mupu native American tribe that populated Santa paula in earlier times. An allegorical drawing of a native American stands on the wall of the right dining room facing the bar. “the bar is the original one that was in chasen’s,” he added.

A fillmore native, Shiells worked at his family’s ranch but had a good feel for food preparation. “christmas and thanks-giving are my favorite time of the year for food and cooking.” his chefs follow his traditional methods in the kitchen and bring in local residents who favor the home cooked fl avor of the restaurant and occasionally sit at the long mahogany bar that carries with it the history of hollywood luminaries.

With luck, bill Shiells will entertain listeners with stories about chasen’s or even his colorful stories about places he has visited or lived in.

thursday and Saturday, nights you may even enjoy a chance to sing karaoke and to make the dining experience an event, fridays soft guitar music. the Sunday brunch is a tasty and enjoyable feast along with afternoon live band. there is also an outdoor dining area for those times when the diner prefers the natural Santa paula weather.

Community among friends (Caf) was a vision of gus Sanchez, operations Manager for Republic Services, Inc. in oxnard, California. All women experience different symptoms, aches, and pains during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, you ought to know that your body and the baby’s change dramatically daily. So, to start working toward a healthy pregnancy, you must start from even before you conceive. The following steps will help you in this wonderful stage of your life.

First, visit your doctor, he or she will set you in the right path to a successful pregnancy. Second, eat daily a balanced and healthy diet. And third, do moderate exercise; it will help you to get back in shape right after the baby is born.

Furthermore, intake of prenatal vitamins is extremely important. Among these nutrients, folic acid plays a vital role, for studies say that it might be capable to prevent by up to 40 percent the risk of autism in newborns.

Summer 2012 | 23

Let’s get real…from pool parties to lazy beach days to BBQ’s; the California Summer time provides a wide array of fun places to visit and activities to do, but it is important to remember that taking care of your skin is crucial during this sizzling, hot season. When you think of taking care of your skin, you must think of what you are doing internally, not just externally.

STAY HYDRATED AND MOISTURIZE

My number one recommendation is to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. It helps and improves many bodily functions including digestion, absorption, circulation, and excretion.

Another tip for this season is to always moisturize and use sun block, not just on those long days spent lounging on the beach, but even if you’re stepping out to your ve-hicle and are only in the sun for a short time. The sun ages the skin; therefore, if you are into tanning, please skip tanning your face. Believe me, your skin will thank you.

Invest in a good eye cream to apply every night. I love Su-per Restorative Total eye Concentrate from Clarin’s and Chanel skin care products.

Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty about my make up tips to maintain that beautiful Summer glow.

DON’T MAKEUP, MAKEEVEN

I usually replace my foundation for a tinted moisturizer, and I prefer a shade or two darker than the face skin to even out the body and face complexion. I recommend

“Beauty Balm” by Too Face, it is a light-diffusing pigment, oil free moisturizer, and most importantly it has SPF20 for all skin types. The texture of this product is fantastic and it makes the skin radiant and fl awless.

Next is concealer. I prefer Makeup Forever’s concealers for a fabulous coverage. If you prefer a matte fi nish, after you apply the balm and concealer, let the product dry for about fi ve minutes and set it with a loose powder. Try Bare Minerals in a matte fi nish.

LIPS AND EYES THAT SHINE

Follow with the Napoleon Perdis, “Red Carpet Set” palette that includes some of the most requested lip colors this Summer: vibrant coral, orange blushes and four Sum-mer shades for eye shadow. Too Face also has an amazing Summer Eye Palette from mattes to shimmers to bright coral. For the lips try Benefi t’s lip stains from the original Benetint to Coralista, and to my personal favorite Chacha. These can all be found at your nearest Benefi t counter.

SAY GOODBYE TO MAKEUP MELTDOWNS

For those women who spend time at the pool you might want to try Cargo’s waterproof bronzer, eye liner and mas-cara. These are all great products that maintain that natu-ral Summer look even in the water!

Hope you all found these make up tips helpful, however don’t forget the essentials: moisturize, use sun block and drink plenty of water for that radiant summer glow.

When visiting e Alamo Restaurant in Newbury Park, prepare for a dining experience that will keep you coming back to this friendly family-run eatery for more.Every detail, from its clean and spacious dining area to its meticulously kept kitchen is lovingly supervised by owner-restaurateur, Stephen P. Vasquez, who has framed the perfect setting for authentic Mexican cuisine. From his excellent steak picado to his grandmother’s tortillas de harina, every detail is a touch of gastronomic art. Taste these tortillas, please.“ ese tortillas are the way my grandmother used to make them,” said Vazquez. “She was from Sonora, Mexico and she did not like corn tortillas so she made these tortillas de ha-rina and has continued making sure these are the authentic tortillas.”How good is the food? People come from miles around to his establishment no doubt because of the fond memories the name Alamo Restaurant brings back. e original Alamo was located near the Ventura County Government Center. Vasquez only bought the Newbury park establishment and later opened another one in Agoura Hills.Vasquez, a jovial man with an easy smile has his own memories of that original venue. As a young man and looking for work he answered an advertisement for a waiter position. His inexperience was evident “and I was fi red on the fi rst day on the job,” he added. He did not give up. He worked at Sambo’s restaurant in Oxnard and eventu-ally came back becoming one of the managers of the Alamo chain that at one time owned six restaurants in the area.Hit with hard economic times, then owner Robert Campos tried to diversify the menu to attract more customers but it did not work. “ e restaurant had everything from Chinese food to Pizza,” he pointed out raising his eyes heaven-ward. “Mr Campos said the Alamo was a California restaurant.” But the menu diversifi cation did not work. “Maybe that is not what people expected because the Alamo had been a Mexi-can restaurant. ere is even a nice allegorical tale to this eatery.“In the restaurant, prominently displayed in an enclosed case was the costume John Wayne used during the fi lming of the 1961 fi lm Remember the Alamo,’ he noted ‘But the costume disappeared sometime before I acquired the restaurant.’And the rest is restaurant history. “When Mr. Campos died, his wife asked me to help her run the restaurant and eventually asked me if I wanted to buy this place,” he said opening his arms as if to embrace the whole venue. I did not have the money, so I talked it over with my parents and we gathered the money among family and friends.”And the success formula was to return to its Mexican cuisine roots including those Tortilllas de Harina from Sonora that abuelita used to make. “My father is very happy to have been included as owner,” and his father, Robert Vasquez, holds court as host of the restaurant that gives this place the zest of the Vasquez clan.‘My father comes from a family of 14 and he is the life of the party. e fi esta does not start until my father arrives.’ A nephew, Christopher Vasquez, son Mark Vasquez, and other family members

serve the tables and operate the register as well as Gary Cabello a family friend “I have known ever since he was in high school.” And this family crew “are all the people I trust to run this res-taurant and take care of its clientele.”And even though Vasquez has done his stint as chef whose favor-ite creation is the steak picado, “now I leave that up to the chefs and do not interfere with them. I taste the food and make sure it is up to par but I let them do their own cooking.’ he said.As to other amenities, the restaurant features a full sports bar with a 52 inch LCD screen where patrons can enjoy Los Dodg-ers playing while savoring their favorite spirit.Overall, an outstanding experience with specials such as Tex Mex Buff et, Margarita ursday and and enjoyable Happy Hour from 3 to 5 p.m.

Before you say “I do,” Wouldn’t you like to get married on an exotic island, or a remote beach in the Caribbean? Destination weddings are becoming an alternative choice for couples that want to avoid having to arrange for a venue, caterer, seating arrangements and everything that comes with a traditional wedding and the expen-sive price tag.

Many couples are choosing to have a destination wedding because they want their wedding day to feel special and personal to them, or just simply because they want to simplify the entire process. It’s a way to get your entire family and friends involved and interested. Destination weddings have increased in popularity for several rea-sons. There’s couples who are on budget that don’t want to spend on things they feel are unnecessary or don’t want the big produc-tion that comes with it. There’s also couples with a smaller guest list in mind, or even those that plan on reserving the entire resort for a really big guest count, and lets not forget there’s also those that are getting married for the second time and want to do it a little different the second time around.

There are resorts and hotels around the world that take care of ev-erything for you, from your marriage license, priest or minister, fl owers and photographer, your wedding cake, champagne toast and your wedding reception. Whether the special day involves just the two of you or whether you’ll be inviting friends and relatives to join in the occasion, a destination wedding can be a way to create wonderful memories.

Destination Weddings… A New Trend!
