I t’s hard to imagine a dest inat ion

that offers d ive t rave lers more

than the Cayman Is lands. Under-

water there i s incredib le

d ivers i ty : co lorfu l wal l s ,

sha l low cora l reefs , new and

old wrecks, and f r iendly,

photogenic

mar ine l i fe . Divers enjoy

a l l of th is in v i s ib i l i ty that

averages 75 to 100 feet and water

temperatures f rom 79° to 83°F.

Div ing couldn’t be eas ier

anywhere. The tops ide d ive

serv ices are state of the art and

just as d iverse as the underwater

att ract ions. There i s a d ive

operat ion to su i t every need,

every budget and every wish.

The three is lands are very differ-

ent. L itt le Cayman and Cayman Brac

are sparsely populated and quiet.

Grand Cayman offers a l i t t le of

everything. The capital of George

Town has every modern amenity but

there are quiet, laidback areas as well.

Whi le great dive dest inat ions of-

ten require diff icult travel , the

Cayman Is lands are easi ly reached—

they’re just a l i t t le more than an

hour’s jet f l ight from Miami.

G rand Cayman’s reefs offer a

var iety of marine l i fe en-

counters. The f ish and cr itters are

unafraid of divers, knowing we

pose no threat. They don’t f lee

when approached. Instead, s i lvery

Tarpon hover motionless in mid-

water, surrounded by gl i ttery

Si lvers ides, and French Angelf ish

f in in c lose to check you out.

Huge Barrel Sponges and swir l ing

schools of f ish are common off

Grand Cayman. These reefs are

unspoi led; gorgonians and hard

corals thr ive in the clear, warm

waters. And last but not least,

most dives s i tes are just minutes

offshore.

A mong Grand Cayman‘s

many f ine dive attrac-

t ions are i ts wal ls—the

is land is v irtual ly surrounded

by them. Some slope gently,

others drop precipitously in-

to the depths. Al l wear a

cloak of luxurious marine

l i fe; Orange Elephant Ear

and Strawberry Vase

Sponges are found forming

underwater bouquets with

pastel colored gorgonians.

These s i lent depths are the

terr i tory of patrol l ing Eagle

Rays, turt les and big f ish,

divers are merely v is i tors.

Grand Cayman’s wrecks

are r ipe for explorat ion.

Most have been down for

many years and have ac-

quired a pat ina of growth;

they are s lowly becoming

parts of the reefs. Each

wreck has i ts own eccentr ic

residents that are fun to f ind

and photograph.

I t’s an exhi larat ing, one of a k ind adventure.

The Wor ld’s Best 12 Foot Dive takes p lace on a

sandy seaf loor in Grand Cayman’s North Sound.

The att ract ion i s numerous Southern St ingrays .

Accustomed to handouts , they waste no t ime

congregat ing under arr iv ing d ive boats . They’re

as eager to see d ivers and snorke lers as d ivers

and snorke lers are to see them.

Underwater, you kneel and they approach.

L ike miniature underwater p lanes, they “f ly”

here, there and everywhere. Up, down, in and

among the guests , they’ re looking for food. I f

you’ve brought squid—the rays ’ favor i te

snack—you’ l l quick ly d iscover you have a whole

new set of f r iends. Gent ly, gent ly, the rays

explore your body, looking for the t reat they

know you have. Produce i t and they’ l l inhale i t .

A lso jo in ing the melee are Yel lowtai l Snappers ,

never ones to let a tender morse l go to waste.

As the rays g l ide in and around, you’ l l be

treated to int imate and very personal

encounters . Caress the i r ve lvety unders ides as

they pass by. Take photographs and v ideos. Be

forewarned, though: One d ive i s not enough!

The Phenomenon of Stingray City is Wild Marine LifeInteracting With Divers in Such a Familiar Manner.

Renamed the MV Capt. Kei th T ibbetts , she i s the

only d ivable Russ ian warship in the Western
