Vocabulary of Diversity

Goal #1 Vocabulary

Race – Refers to a person’s skin color, hair color, and size and shape of one’s features

Skin color is determined by the amount of melanin in a person’s skin, which is a result of ancestry and their location to the sun.

Culture – What’s on the inside of a person Holidays Religion Family Values

Ethnicity – Where someone is from geographically

Racial Makeup of the US

77% of Americans are white Midwest has the highest proportion of

white people to other racial groups One-fifth of the population is foreign-

born or has a parent who is foreign-born

96% of child care centers care for children from diverse racial groups.

80% care for children from other language groups

Changing Population

64% of school children are white. By 2020 children of color will make

up the majority of school children 22% of all immigrants are under 25 87% of all teachers are white middle

Institutional Racism

Occurs when they are unequal outcomes for children of the same age from different groups

At 6 months children notice skin color Doll Experiment

Children of color who had direct experience with within the white community tended to prefer white dolls rather than dolls with brown skin.

By age 7 children tend to demonstrate more positive attitudes towards children of their own race. White children tend to have negative attitudes about children from other races.
