Inthefallof2015weranaresearchpilotwithanon-profitorganiza7ontoproveahypothesisthathasbeenempiricallyverifiedrepeatedlyelsewhere1:diversitystrengthensinnova7on.Weini7allyproposedtoemployInterna'onally-TrainedProfessionalsorITPstobecome‘innova7onconsultants’toworkonreal-worldprojectsprovidedbycompaniesintheMetroVancouverarea.WhileitiswellknownthatqualifiedITPsbringawealthofskillsandknowledgethattheycanputtousealmostimmediatelyaMertheirarrival,theyarenormallysubjecttosub-employmentfor3-5yearsbecauseoflackoftheinfamous“CanadianExperience”.Weasked,“whatif,insteadofhavinginterna7onaltalentworkingsurvivaljobswhileaccumula7ngyearsof“Canadianexperience”,theycouldu7lizetheirexper7seandskillsrightawayinprofessionalprojects?”Theproposalincludedexploi7ngtheexis7ngskillsofITPs“asis”notindividually,butasagroupofprofessionalsthatwouldaddressproblemsandiden7fyopportuni7esforinnova7onu7lizingonecommonapproach:innova7onanddesignthinking.

Acommonbuzzwordthrownaroundinpresenta7ondecksandtheobligatoryinclusioninannualreports,“innova7on”isapervasiveyetoMenmisunderstoodconcept.Manyexecu7vess7lluseitinterchangeablytoconnote“technology”andevensomeotherstodefine“ITini7a7ves”.Therealityisthatinnova7vecompaniesunderstandthatthecoreconceptofbeingaprogressiveorganiza7onliesontheinculca7onof“innova7on”asawayofdoingthings;regardlessofwhetheritisamul7-milliondollardeploymentofanITinfrastructureorhowtogreetcustomersinaface-to-facebanktellerservice.

Hireforinnova/onIt’sbeenproventhatdiversitystrengthensinnova7onwhereverthereexistspropermechanismstoexploitmul7-skilledtalent.Companiesshouldpaymorea]en7ontopersonalcharacteris7csofnewhiresthatarereflec7veofaninquisi7vepersonality,opennesstonewideasand,toacertainextent,aprogressiveagtudetochallengingthestatusquo.Createopportuni/esforcollabora/on Buildingtherightframeworkthatallowsforcross-disciplinary,mul7-ethnic,mul7-skilledcollabora7onisreallytheonlywaytoexploitin-housecrea7vity.Hackathons,10%innova7oncommitment,squash-bugdays,innova7onfairs,cross-disciplinarytaskforces,theyareallstrategiesthatcompaniescanengagetheiremployeeswithvirtuallyzerobudgetalloca7on,andyetreaptherewardsintheformofnewideas,proposalsandcon7nuousimprovementprojects.
