Page 2: Diversity Survey 2021

Introduction for Publication of our Diversity SurveyWhen I first came out publicly as gay, way back in 1984, and became the first openly gay MP, I did so in a speech in Rugby at a rally protesting about a Rugby Council decision toremove “sexual orientation” from the list of things they would not discriminate against in their employment policy. It struck me that the fundamental issue at stake was theability of anyone, no matter what their sexual orientation happened to be, to do an equally good and valid job as anyone else, working for Rugby Council. And I realised thatexactly the same applied to MPs.

Exactly the same, of course, applies to patent and trade mark attorneys too. The field of brilliant IP attorneys embraces men and women, young and old, LGBT+, people withdisabilities, people with caring responsibilities, people from advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds, people from a huge range of ethnic backgrounds. And to get the verybest field of attorneys there can possibly be, we must ensure that no one feels they are potentially excluded because of who or what they are. That’s why sustaining andenhancing the diversity of the profession is so important; and it’s why I warmly welcome this survey that IPReg has just conducted. It gives us a snapshot picture of theprofession, but more importantly it provides us with much food for thought, and the opportunity to consider how we can remove barriers and welcome broader diversity into thefuture.

In IPReg we will be looking in detail at what this survey reveals, and developing ideas about how – working together with the profession – we can make further progress. We willcertainly welcome responses and ideas about how best we can do so.

Lord Chris Smith - Chair of IPReg
