To test the divisibility by 3, 9 and 11 we form the sum of the digits or alternate digits of the given number till we get a single digit number. The divisibility by 2, 4 and 8 is restricted to the divisibility of the number formed by the last 1, 2 or 3 digits only of the given number. In other words we reduce the given number in to a smaller number, whose divisibility implies the divisibility of the given number. The question is: Can we reduce an arbitrary number into a smaller one whose divisibility or otherwise by an integer ensures the divisibility of the given number? The answer is in affirmative. In fact, in any base b-number system, for a divisor d co-prime to the base, every number can be reduced, at least, to a T d - digit number, where T d is the period of the representation of the reciprocal of the divisor in the base b. In case the divisor is a prime number (primality is base insensitive) and T d is even, the dividend can be further reduced to a T d / 2 - digit number. The divisibility tests (in decimal system) for certain integers such as 2, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 11 are well known.

To test the divisibility by 3, 9 and 11 we form the sum of the digits or alternate digits of the given

number till we get a single digit number. The divisibility by 2, 4 and 8 is restricted to the divisibility of the

number formed by the last 1, 2 or 3 digits only of the given number. In other words we reduce the given

number in to a smaller number, whose divisibility implies the divisibility of the given number.

The question is: Can we reduce an arbitrary number into a smaller one whose divisibility or

otherwise by an integer ensures the divisibility of the given number? The answer is in affirmative. In

we provide, in tables 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 respectively given in the end of this paper, rules/tests

denoted by Jg(d)= m and J(d)g= m, where m, d and g are integers such that 0 <g ≤Td , 0 < ІmІ <d.

We define these rules/tests as;

Jg(d) = m: Starting from the end parse s into g-digit groups. Delete and multiply the leftmost group by

m and add to the next group. Repeat and continue the process till s is reduced to a ≤ g-digit

number say t.

J(d)g= m: Starting from the end parse s into g-digit groups. Delete and multiply the rightmost group by

m and add to the truncated s. Repeat and continue the process till the reduced number say t is ≤ a g-

digit number or starts increasing. If s is divisible by d, t may start repeating.

Then in both the cases s is divisible by d if and only if t is so. In these rules/tests ( given in table 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 ) the multiplier i. e. m is generally a single digit

number and where ever it is 2 or 3 digit number, all the digits are equal or only one of the digits is

different from 0 and 1. By this arrangement multiplication can be performed easily.

In fact, for a full period n-digit divisor d there are 2(d – n) rules /tests of each type mentioned above in

which 0 < ІmІ ≤ (d – 1). As an example (in decimal system) for d = 7, a full-period prime number, there

are 24 such rules/ tests.
