Division Goals(as of Sept 5)

It’s finally December, the last month of the year! It’s time for relaxation and cheer. We finally get a long, two week vacation. It’s just in time because we have a busy December coming up. From CTC to Interkey, we have a load on our shoulders.

Remember that this vacation is an opportunity to do more for your community. Imagine the happiness you could bring to many since a lot of the events happening in December happen to do with the holidays. Their happiness can bring you happiness, so go and spread that cheer!

Providing Basic Needs

December’s Service InitiativeThe Spotlight on Service Program was created to educate Cali-Nev-Ha Key Clubbers about the Key Club International as well as Cali-Nev-Ha Service Initiatives and encourage active participation with/for the or-ganizations and initiatives. A service Initiative is assigned each month in which clubs should focus a project or two on supporting the initiative.

The December Focus is...

The holiday season is a time to spend quality time with friends and families. This month, our focus to provide basic needs to those who need our help so

they can have a memorable holiday season as well. Whether that need is food, shelter, warmth, clothes, or a kind letter of appreciation, we will be making a

positive difference to our communities!

CLUB REPORTS

Alameda

Albany

This past month has been pretty busy for the seniors due to college applications, but that just gives our underclassmen members time to shine. This month, Alameda Key club helped out at a Haunted House, the OMCA Day of the Dead, the food bank, and at Uhuru Pies. In ad-dition to that, we have received many books due to the book drive created by our fundraising chairs. Early in the month, we passed out UNICEF boxes to help fundraise for children in need, and we plan to collect the boxes in the near future.

This month was a rather slow month for Albany. While many of our new members went to FRN to get into the true Key Club spirit, others volunteered at the Ocean View Fall Festival, a carnival held at an Albany elementary school. We ran games, painted faces, and more. We also had a successful bake sale at our high school, selling the majority of baked goods made by our members. Although service events come slowly once in a while, we’re ready to get back to it in November!

15

Page 16: Division 2 December 2014

16

American Indian Public For the month of October, American Indian participated in the Swim-A-Mile event at mills College, where we counted laps for swimmers. We also attended the October DCM to pre-pare for FRN by learning new chants. Moreover, American Indian participated in our very first FRN! For Halloween, we cleaned up after our school’s Halloween Party, and we went trick-or-treating for UNICEF! Overall, October was a very productive month for our club.

This month has been really busy for Arroyo Key Club as we had numerous events. Our events include: beautification of San Leandro High School’s campus, Halloween Dance for Special Needs, Lorenzo Manor Elementary Fall Festival, St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room, Dia de los Muertos, Break Free Run, Weekend Weed Warriors, and our school’s very own art gallery and Oktoberfest carnival. Many of our new and returning members volunteered in these events and have lately become really active. Arroyo Key Club also held a poster-making social where our members got to socialize while eating snacks and making beautiful posters about Key Club and our fundraiser, Stuck for a Buck. We hosted our Stuck for a Buck fun-draiser during our school lunch on November 6th where we taped our new principal to the gym wall, pied our officers, and fundraised for PTP. We flew past our goal of $200 and made exactly $313.62! This month was probably the best and most active month we’ve had so far!

Berkeley High has started off the school year strong! We have volunteered at multiple events such as the Coastal Cleanup at the Berkeley Marina and the DWS at the Port of Oakland. That same day, 16 of our members volunteered at the Eat Real Festival in Jack London Square. We also spent a morning at GLIDE in San Francisco making bagged lunches and prepping for meals. Most recently, we volunteered at Sunday Streets which took place along Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley. We are planning to have bake sales at school and on Fourth Street this month.

Berkeley

Castro ValleyOctober was a month filled with great division events and lots of preparation for FRN. It started with another successful bake sale where our members made wonderful cookies, cup-cakes and other baked goods which we sold in order to raise funds for PTP and Eliminate. Frn was on the 18th and we had many members attend and got to experience a great fall rally with Key clubbers from northern California. And with October being the month of Halloween, we got the opportunity to help out at a couple harvest festivals such as Proctor elementary and the Salvation Army, October was a great month of service and fun

17

Page 18: Division 2 December 2014

18

El Cerrito

EncinalEverything this month went by smoothly. We helped at the Alameda Food Bank again. We are finding more events for next month and may collect small gifts for the local elderly.

This month we are volunteering at Riverside Elementary on Wednesdays after school. There is also an opportunity to get involved with volunteering at a senior citizen center.

18

OaklandNovember has been a great month for Oakland High’s Key Club. Our school has participat-ed in various events such as Sasaul Creek, Life is Living, Campus Cleanup, Trybe’s Hallow-een Event and much more. Once again, with the participation of many dedicated members, we’ve fulfilled the minimum goal of having at least 100 service hours. With all the engage-ment this month, we’ve pulled through with over 238 hours of service! We are happy our club is going strong and we are looking forward to many more projects/service events in the upcoming months.

Leadership PublicJust last Saturday, our school took part in the Science in the Fair exhibition in which stu-dents had the opportunity to do hands on experiments with major scientists, and have fun. For example, we got to see rockets launch, pet brown llamas, and learn about climate change since it’s obviously important considering the drought and extreme temperatures in Califor-nia right now.

19

Page 20: Division 2 December 2014

20

Oakland TechnicalOver the past month we’ve been partaking in a bunch of services. We’ve been helping a whole bunch with Uhuru and other local services. We participated in 2 haunted houses events, boba sales at school, and even helping out our school. We’ve have been doing a ton of services and now we are planning for more as well as fundraiser for our club and of course, Eliminate.

PiedmontWe’re finally back into the volunteer spirit! Recently, we volunteered at the Children’s Fairy-land in Oakland to help them hand out treats to excited miniature princesses and Batmen. We’ve also been working with Uhuru in their annual pie campaign by helping to make mixes and bake pies. As for fundraising, we are still holding biweekly bubble tea sales and are ex-cited to donate to PTP and The Eliminate Project!

20

Page 21: Division 2 December 2014

21

San LeandroThis month San Leandro’s key club had some fun events! Past events we had were Beautifica-tion day at San Leandro High School with our local Kiwanis club, Food pantry, Roosevelt’s Fall Festival, and 2nd annual break free run where our club helped cheer the runners on! Also, in honor of key club week, our club attended a Kiwanis meeting to thank each of the Kiwanis who support our club! Future events we have are food pantry and James Madison fall festival.

In mid October Key Clubbers had few service events to participate in. I myself participated in today’s event with LMUMC’s food drive from 8:30-12. As mentioned before we aided in the Oaktoberfest, but we also volunteered with FOSC on the 18th, and Building A Park on the November. There, our members pulled out weeds and worked on invasive plant removal. We are still planning our bake sale since our fundraising officer was absent on account of injury.

Fall FestivalAsha L., Albany

On the same Saturday as FRN, our club helped out at the Ocean View Fall Festival. Volunteers were assigned different jobs, such as running the carnival games. Some members handed out prizes to the little kids as they hit glass bottles with balls, or painted cute designs on their faces. Also, just in time for Halloween, members helped the kids be safe and careful as they carved and decorated pumpkins. We also assisted in jewelry making as well as selling delicious food from local vendors, such as smoothies and Vietnamese sandwiches. There was even a giant slide that, when we weren’t working, we might have enjoyed, too. Aside from the carnival was the Walk-a-thon, where kids and students walked around 1.5 miles to raise money for their school. Members motivated them with cheers as well as keeping them hydrated. Although certain members had to miss FRN, helping out the little kids was worth it.

Uhuru PiesOn Saturday, November 1, Piedmont Key Clubbers volunteered at the Uhuru Pie kitchen to make pie filling for Uhuru’s holiday pumpkin pies. Uhuru Pies is one of many Black Star Industries, aimed at building self-sustaining economic devel-opment to benefit African people worldwide and bringing recognition to African culture. We arrived at the kitchen at 2:00 p.m. and received a debriefing on the goals and mission statement of Uhuru. Afterwards we were split into two teams to begin the first step in creating the pie filling. One group measured out the dry ingredients, including flour, sugar, and spices. A second group cracked and whipped the eggs as well measured out cream for the pie filling. After the first batch’s ingredients were measured out, we began to assemble the filling. In an extremely large bowl, the dry mixture was slowly added to pumpkin puree and mixed until combined thoroughly. Then, the eggs and cream were poured in and stirred, creating a creamy and fragrant pie filling that made everyone’s mouths water. After everything was completely combined, the pie filling was transferred into 5-gallon tubs and labeled to be refrigerated and baked at a later date. Each batch makes a total of 54 pies and we were able to make four batches in four hours. We had a lot of fun making pie filling together and trying hard not to spill too much of it on the floor in the process. This was an extremely rewarding event and a great way to start off the holiday season!

During school lunch on Thursday, November 6th, Arroyo Key Club hosted its own 2nd Annual Stuck for a Buck fundraiser! We taped our new principal, Mr. Gray, to the gym wall for only a dollar per yard of duct tape, hence the name “Stuck for a Buck,” and fundraised for PTP! We also allowed people to pie our officers for $5, and it turned out to be a fun, sticky mess! Many enthusiastic Arroyo students as well as teachers and staff members came out to check out our fundraiser and also participated whether it was taping Mr. Gray, donating, pieing an officer, or simply cheering us kiwis on! This turned out to be a very successful fundraiser; we surpassed our original goal of $200 and fundraised exactly $313.62! We promised to pie our new principal if we reached our goal, but when lunch ended, we had only made about $150 and disappointingly couldn’t pie him. However, after people left, something unexpected happened! Our kiwanian, Mike Le Faivre, donated over $100, helping us reach our goal of $200! No one was around to witness Mike’s amazing donation other than a few officers, teachers, and kiwanians, so on behalf of Arroyo Key Club, we would like to thank Mike for his kind donation! We would also like to give a special shout-out and a grateful thanks to kiwanian Susan Reisz for donating $40 during our club meeting to boost our total over $300 and to kiwanian Vonnah Bagner for donating as well! We give an enormous thanks to those who participated and made this event happen! Without them, this event wouldn’t have been as ecstatic as it was!

We have been doing a whole bunch of services with Uhuru because they are a weekly service that we do every other week. Last time Oakland Tech’s Key Club helped out with Uhuru we helped out with prepping food. We peeled sweet potatos and helped set up with everything and things got a bit messy but it was extremely fun. It was a great event knowing that Uhuru is also an organization and that we were able to help their cause. We can’t wait to continue helping them out every other week and we wish them success too.

October was a month filled with Halloween and harvest festivals all over. Elementary schools all over Castro Valley had planned their own festivals and carnivals, which meant a lot of service opportunities for CVHS Key Club! One of the events we attended was the Proctor Elementary Halloween Festival, which was a great success. There were a lot of kids there, so there was never a dull moment during the event. We helped run many booths, such as carnival games, selling tickets, and running the cotton candy machine they had there as well. The Proctor event was a great success with so many key clubbers and kids at the event. Everyone had a great time and It is one of our yearly events so we will definitely be returning next year.

DNE’S CLOSING MESSAGEHujambo Kiwis!

That’s how you say hello in Swahili! Did you know that Swahili is spoken in over 10 countries including Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique? I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family, friends, and good food! Now that we’re nice and well-rested from the break, let’s power through school for a couple more weeks. Then, it’ll be Winter Break and the holidays! But that doesn’t mean a lazy month, oh no, not at all. In fact, December is jam-packed with all sorts of events, all fun, but some more serious than others. On the more serious spectrum, we have our Candidate Training Conference. That’s right, it’s time to start thinking about if you want to run to be our next Lieutenant Governor! But not to worry, CTC is filled with lots of information about running for and being LTG so I hope that you’ve registered and are planning on coming if you’re interested. This month we have TWO bonding events: a service InterKey event with Interact’s Area 2 and an ice skating social with Division 26 South! I’m super excited for all the events coming up this month, for the break and the holidays, and the new year! It’s pretty crazy that we’re only a month away, but I guess it’s time to start thinking about those New Year’s resolutions. As we get closer and closer to the end of the month and year, make sure you take some time to reflect; what did you do in this wonderful year of 2014? What changes do you want to make for next year? I hope you accomplished what you wanted, but if not, here comes 2015! Here’s to an amazing 2015!!!

With love,
