THE FORMULA
Kiwanis, like all service
clubs, struggles to retain
and grow its membership,
and all it takes in most
cases to bring in that new
member is a simple ASK.
So keep Kiwanis front of
mind when you are out and
about this Christmas
season - we have a great
story to tell and there are
many likeminded people
out there who would love
to be invited to join us but
have just never been asked.

ORILLIA CLUB
Growing
The ORILLIA club has been on a roll so far this year, with the induction of FIVE
new members since President Ben Cole took office, and they have several more
prospective new members in the pipeline. The most recent inductees are
Heather Breckles, a long time supporter and wife of former Kiwanian and Past
President, Dave Breckles, and Mark Goode, also a former member, who was
eager to get back into serving the children of our community through the work
of Kiwanis. It is great to have two such community-minded individuals join the
ranks of the club.

The ORILLIA Club continues to run and operate its very successful Kiwanis
Children’s Safety Village (KCSV), which recently received a donation of $2,000
from the Paramedics of Simcoe County, and the donation was in conjunction
with their decision to also join the KCSV instructional team.

Orillia Club auction
The Orillia Club’s annual Mammoth Auction at the beginning of November was
another huge success, with the net profit expected to exceed last year’s
impressive $61,000. There were some terrific items, a great crowd of bidders
and lots of fun for the Kiwanis club members and their families, who all turned
out in force to help with the event. Several members of the Barrie Club, including
LG Eric Gonneau, as well as Gary and Julia Levine from Owen Sound club,
showed up Friday night to share the fun and dinner, and to see what the
auction is all about. ________________________________________________________________
The Orillia Club celebrated the Christmas season with "glow in the dark bowling,"
attended by about 30 adults and 17 kids, and even Santa dropped by for a visit
and fun and food.

Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound
A new Kiwanis year begins under the leadership of President Bill Sornberger, the
Chief of Police in Owen Sound. The club was pleased to welcome members of the
Barrie Club to its induction night on October 1st.
President Bill Sornberger is presented L to R: PG Chuck McIlravey, Division 8 The President’s Gavel by PP Paul Strimas Treasurer K Dorothy McIlravey, LG Eric Gonneau Secretary Gail Andrews and PLG Bob Bogardis
The club is also delighted to have inducted three new members –
PP Golden K Jack Tweddle and PP Golden K Dr. Gilbert Howey, in addition
to Kerry-Ann Weaver, daughter of PLG Al Kelly and his wife Ann Kelly. Their
enthusiasm will be a wonderful addition to the club.

This year has been the 100th year of Kiwanis International and a special
Centennial medal was struck. Owen Sound was pleased to present this medal to
its faithful Past Presidents in attendance at the induction night: Andy Drury, Gord
Harris, Clarke McLeod, Don Sweatman, Bob Miller and John Prettie.
PLG Linda van Aalst assisted PP Paul Strimas in making the presentations.
![Page 7: DIVISION 8 CLUBLETTER - Kiwanis Club of OrilliaKIWANIS KIDS BRING UP GRADES (BUG) This is a program designed to provide recognition to students who raise their grades into an acceptable](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022050402/5f7fdaa5ef78a47e5226b2f9/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
A HUGE tip of the hat to the Owen Sound Club which not only fullfilled its club pledge of $45,000 to ELIMINATE, but even raised an additional $1,100 with its Trick or
Treat for UNICEF coin collection in October, and over and above that is still receiving dollar matches from the government.
Ted Horton presented a cheque for $35,000 to Whispering Pines Chair Steve Sired.
which was the culmination of his efforts to raise money to offset the cost of building
and equipping the cabins. These new cabins are now ready for use at the campground
and greatly enhance the property.
A cheque for $20,000 was presented to the City of Owen Sound as part of the
club’s commitment of $100,000 as the major sponsor of the SK8 and Bike Park.
It was built beside the club’s new recreation centre and is being enjoyed daily by
youth of all ages.
Donations such as these are not possible without the fundraising efforts of the
Kiwanis Kitchen, the Christmas Tree Sales and the Whispering Pines Campground.
The highlight for November was hosting the Owen Sound’s 70th Kiwanis Santa
Claus Parade. The club continues to assist at OSHaRE in serving food each month
and is pleased to recognize and congratulate students at the monthly Terrific Kids
assemblies as well.

ELIMINATE
PROJECT
ELIMINATE continues to eradicate neonatal
and maternal tetanus around the world, and at last count had raised around $105 million. Wow!!
Barrie Golden K
The Golden K of Barrie has been busy, adding three new members since mid-
September, with a fourth one “in process.”
Through October the members delivered the poppies to Barrie businesses and
schools to assist the Legion in its fundraising drive, and provided a wreath for the
service at the cenotaph. One of their members is a 92 year old veteran who
served with the RCAF and survived being shot down and finished the war as a
POW. The November 10 club meeting was in the form of a Remembrance service
with six of the members, younger and older, reminiscing about VE Day.
The week of November 16 saw the club manning Salvation Army kettles, and the
club’s fundraising Christmas cake sales are now underway (and thanks go out to
the Barrie club for allowing them to sell at their Christmas tree locale).
On November 24, the club is taking a bus trip to the Famous People Players, and
its annual Christmas party will be held December 8 - members of other clubs are
most welcome – maybe plan to make it an Interclub!
MEAFORD
The Meaford Club held a pancake breakfast at the very widely attended October
Craft Show in Meaford, and also ran a two day Food Booth at the event, to raise
extra funds.
They also continue to run their main fundraiser, the Midas Mart, which takes a lot
of member time, but fortunately there are a lot of volunteers to help keep it
going. This is a hugely successful venture for the club.
Although the club membership is aging and ailing, and is now down to just 10
members, this club remains a viable force in the Meaford area and their
community work is very well known to the local residents.
