New Business C-5 Bylaws Revisions (D. Karcher)
• Long over-due for an update
• Many thanks to J. Murphy for drafting the updated language in early September (circulated 62 days prior to vote according to bylaws)
• Update language to conform to CSSA Bylaws
– Corrected division name to Turfgrass Science
– Remove gender specific language (Chairman)
– Formalize Stiegler Awards Committee
• Charged with awarding Stiegler Travel Awards
• Functions similar to other committees
• Chair-Elect is a member who communicates w/ applicants
• Previous topics were open to discussion.
• No discussion
• Motion to Approve (J. Stire) Second (A. Patton)
• Revisions Approved
C-5 Name change consideration (D. Karcher)
• Not able to vote but open discussion on changing the name of C-5 Turfgrass Science to Turf Science
– Comments:
• As a member of CSSA the name change might imply getting away from crops.
• Possibility of alienating sod producers (H. Cummings)
• Could lead to publishing issues (J. Stire)
• Might lead to perception that division is specifically synthetic turf (R. Golembiewski)
• New research is including broadleaves (clovers) in turfgrass therefore it would not be covered if their was a name change (C. Bigelow)
• Information passed along to K. Kopp for future consideration
C-5 Member Legacy (P. Cookingham)
Moving the analog records all over to digital records
Safe place to store information
Valuable scholarship and history preservation

Appendix A 2014 Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award
Committee report
While this is officially a CSSA committee, I felt that the C-5 group would be interested in getting an
update on the activity of this committee.
Award description and criteria:
1. DESCRIPTION OF AWARD: The Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award is
presented in recognition of significant career contributions in turfgrass science.
Contributions may include outstanding research, teaching, extension, commercial,
or administrative activities, or a combination of these activities. The award
consists of a certificate, a complimentary ticket to the awards presentation, and an
honorarium of $1,000.
2. AWARD CRITERIA: Significance and originality of basic and/or applied research.
Teaching ability and effectiveness. Planning and implementation of extension
programs and demonstrated impact. Development and implementation of
significant industrial programs. Administrative ability and effectiveness. Total
impact of activities on turfgrass science, nationally and internationally.
Contributions on which the nomination is based must have been made within the
past 15 years of the nominee's career.
Nominations: We had 5 nominees for this award in 2014. All were very excellent and well deserving
of recognition for their contribution to the turf industry. Lambert Blanchard (L.B.) (Bert) McCarty
was our committee selection and the 2014 Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award winner. Please
congratulate Bert the next time you see him.
Committee members 2014: Aaron Patton, Purdue University - Chair
Bingru Huang, Rutgers University
Tony Koski, Colorado State University
Yaling Qian , Colorado State University
Bryan Unruh, Univ. of Florida-WFREC
Scott Warnke, USDA-ARS
Ben Wherley, Texas A&M University
Committee activities in 2014:
Committee activities in 2014 also included drafting revised guidelines for the award. The guidelines are
similar to a set of bylaws as they lay out the qualifications for the award but also instructions on how the
committee is formed and functions. The guidelines were last revised in 1995. Here is an overview of some
of our key suggested modifications:
• The current bylaws do not require that any member of our committee be involved with the C-5
division.
• Consider increasing the term of the committee members from 2 to 3 years. This would help
with the introduction of new committee members and help increase the “training” of the chair-
elect.
• Adds an official involvement from C-5 in the nomination solicitation process.
• Places an “every 5-years” mandatory review period on the guidelines to help ensure that they
do not become dated again.
• Makes minor adjustments to the award criteria that highlights the “impact” of the nominee’s
program.
Changes in 2015:
Bryan Unruh has agreed to serve as chair in 2015.
Aaron Patton, Bingru Huang, Tony Koski, Yaling Qian, Scott Warnke will all be rotating off this
committee. We are looking for volunteers to serve on this committee.
