On campus, in the hospitals, and in our community, our faculty, students, and staff are hard at work—unified in their passion to create new knowledge, to teach and to learn, and to change lives through research and clinical care. That’s the story behind the numbers.
The Division of Biology and Medicine:

A Boost for Computational Biology A new $11.5 million grant from the NIH launched a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in computational biology, which will support five faculty members as they tackle the genomics underlying diseases such as cancer, preeclampsia, and severe lung infections.
Understanding Aging With a $9.67 million program grant from the National Institutes of Health, researchers at Brown, New York University, and the University of Rochester will collaborate to strengthen evidence that mobility within the genome of potentially harmful DNA snippets, called retrotransposable elements, may cause health problems associated with aging.
Environmental Influences on Health Researchers in the Warren Alpert Medical School are taking part in the NIH’s Environmental Influences on Child Health
Outcomes consortium. The projects include studying the neurodevelopmental outcomes of very preterm infants and Rhode Island’s participation in the IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network.

Science, Translated A $19.5 million award from the NIH established Advance Clinical and Translational Research (Advance-CTR), a central hub to support and educate clinical and translational researchers in Rhode Island. With partners at the University of Rhode Island and Brown’s affiliated hospitals, the center will enhance coordination of translational research across the state to accelerate discoveries that improve health.
An Enduring Partnership The Warren Alpert Foundation gave $27 million to support two top-priority projects. Of the new gift, $22 million endowed the Warren Alpert
Physician-Scientist MD/PhD and Advanced Training Program, which will enable more students to pursue the joint degree; and $5 million established the first endowed professorship in the Brown Institute for Translational Science.
