What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
A range of conditions characterized by challenges in two core domains:
- social communication and interaction
- restrictive and repetitive behaviors.
All students with ASD have unique assets
and differences.2

Why is there a need for a Academy of Integrated Arts &
Technology (AIAT)?
• LAUSD spends over $200 million a year to provide non-public
(NPS) and private school educations to students with disabilities
• Identified need for an alternative to NPS within LAUSD
• Many students identified as twice-exceptional were being sent
to NPS settings, as we were not meeting their needs in LAUSD
and we had limited oversight of program quality in NPS
• Decided to pilot a program in LAUSD that was college
preparatory program on comprehensive school campus
• Serves students that are identified
• Gifted
• Twice-exceptional (ex. Gifted and Learning Disability)
