“OSTRICH WALK” Dixieland At Its Best
PREACHER ROLLO andthe FIVE SAINTS The album you hold in your hand represents one of the finest recorded collections any devotee of Dixieland could hope for! Here you'll find twelve of the great Dixie standards solidly and sumptuously styled by one of the best combos around these days: Preacher Rollo and the Five Saints. High spirits reign supreme, for Dixie is happy music. So, if it’s listening fun you’re seeking, just join the ol’ Preach and his five companions in the gay “OSTRICH WALK” and eleven other all-time Dixie favorites!
The career of Preacher Rollo Laylan has been a long and distinguished one. He started “drumming for Dixie”, as he puts it, in high-school days back in his home town of Genoa, Wiscon- sin. His talents carried him on to a jazz band in college, in which he held forth musically with his roommate, the late, great Bunny Berigan. Later, he joined a combo in Chicago with Eddie Condon, travelling east with the group when Condon decided to explore the wonders of New York. Finally, the Preach decided to carry
Dixieland back below the Mason-Dixon line, settling himself in sunny Florida. He gathered himself a select group of musicians and played a whole string of spots from Miami Beach to Lauder- dale and back: places like The Sky Club, The Poinciana Hotel, The Vagabond Club, The MacFadden-Deauville, The Shoremede Hotel and other select bistros along Florida’s ‘“‘Gold Coast.”
Vacationers and Floridians alike have delighted ever since to the distinctive Dixie stylings of the Preach. The nation at large has had its share of Dixie fun, too, through performances by the genial drummer and his “Saints” over such network radio shows as Mutual’s “Dixieland Breakfast Club” and ‘‘Dixieland Matinee.” And, the world at large has had the pleasure of the group through records. f
In the present stellar recording, the Preach holds forth with “Saints” Tommy Justice, Ernie Goodson, Marie Marcus, Jerry Gorman, Al Matucci, and Tony Parenti.
