DIY FAIRY HALLOWEEN COSTUME (WITH MAKE-UP TUTORIAL) By: Gillian del Rosario Aside from Halloween being scary, it is a time to get creative, glam up and be cute for the boys and also, for ourselves (don’t deny it!). Halloween has changed from scary costumes to cute costumes, which can readily be seen in the 2004 film Mean Girls, when Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) was the only one who actually went to the party wearing a creepy costume while everyone else wore something cute, girly and even – sexy. I guess we wouldn’t want to be like her for now. (photo courtesy: http://giphy.com/search/scary-tv-shows) For this tutorial, I would opt for the girly and for the cute. This how you can become a fairy, a nymph, a Tinkerbelle – or any other creature with wings that you aspire for. But with this – I am opting for the Nature Fairy.

DIY FAIRY HALLOWEEN COSTUME (WITH MAKE-UP TUTORIAL) By: Gillian del Rosario

Aside from Halloween being scary, it is a time to get creative, glam up and be cute for the boys and also, for ourselves (don’t deny it!).

For this tutorial, I would opt for the girly and for the cute. This how you can become a fairy, a nymph, a Tinkerbelle – or any other creature with wings that you aspire for. But with this – I am opting for the Nature Fairy.

When thinking about fairies – one essential things pops to the mind: Wings! This is the most important aspect of this costume because this would readily tell & scream at people saying, “Hey, I’m a gorgeous fairy!” and I wouldn’t want you guys to end up like Karen Smith which people didn’t get that she was a mouse at first glance. I wouldn’t want you guys saying, “I’m a fairy, duh!”

In creating this fairy wings, first and foremost, I know that I am not a hands-on type of person – I am not handy. So this tutorial would be relatively easy, especially if you are already good with crafting things and if not, hey! If I could do it, so can you. You would need the following:

• Ready made white/transparent wings from any shop (National Bookstore, Toy Kingdom, etc.) (This costs less than P 100)

• Spray Paint (color of your choice) • Old Newspapers • Adhesive Spray (or any glue you have)

Page 3: DIY FAIRY HALLOWEEN COSTUMEjournoportfolio.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/... · Aside from Halloween being scary, it is a time to get creative, glam up and be cute for the boys

• Glitters (in all colors you prefer) • Strings (optional) • Scissors (optional)

First Step:

• Gather all your materials, envision what kind of design/color you would want your wings to have

Second Step:

• Lay down newspapers (please do this outside as you might stain your furniture) and place your wings

Third Step:

• Start spraying paint (please shake it before spraying it and do not spray paint directly close to the wings as it might turn out to be too dark)

• Evenly spray your paint and just spray spray spray! Up until you have decided that this is the color intensity you want. I, on the other hand, opted for a lighter teal!

• After spraying the paint, leave it to dry for about 30 minutes. (I have noticed that mine dried up relatively faster, so just check to make sure!)

Fourth Step: • You can now go inside your homes – it is now safe to enter. Spraying glue

is relatively acceptable as opposed to spraying paint. Once it has dried up, gather another set of newspapers and place it on the floor/ground.

• Get your spray adhesive (if you opted for regular glue, get that as well) and if you want to particularly follow a pattern of your own go right ahead, but I prefer something much more messy, random and whimsical.

Fifth Step: • Grab your bottles of glitters and start doing your own design or be like and

just yolo the design and just randomly puff the glitter with all the colors you choose.

Sixth Step:

• After doing your design, I suggest you spray adhesive glue again over it just to make sure the glitters don’t fall off.

Seventh Step: (optional) • After the glitter has been properly placed and everything is all set, you

need to measure the wings. Since it is usually for kids, the garter might be too tight. If it is like mine, you can opt to cut the garter and tie a ball of yarn or whatever for of rope you have. And voila! It perfectly fits.

FLOWER-CROWN TUTORIAL This tutorial will now explore on flower crowns. This will add a girlier and more sophisticated look (besides hipster-ness) to your fairy outfit. What you need:

• An old cloth headband • Fake flowers (I used around 11 flowers and I got mine from the craft

section in national) • Glue gun • Scissors

Step One:

• Position the flowers onto where you want to place it, envision onto what you want the design to be

Step Two: • If the “stem” of the fake flower is available, try twisting it around the

headband (if you are a lazy person and prefer not glue gunning anything). But personal, I suggest you start cutting those stems at it will feel weird on your forehead.

Step Three: • Glue gun your flowers one by one and be careful! I accidentally burned my

finger around 3 times. Just be extra careful, as I don’t want you guys burning your fingers.

Step Four:

• Let it dry and if it is dry, try it on! • There you have it, your very own DIY flower crown!!

MAKE – UP SECTION

This section will focus more on the eye shadow region and also the lip color. I suggest you do your regular make-up routine minus the eye shadow part. WHAT YOU NEED:

• Primer/Moisturizer • Foundation/BB cream • Concealer (if you have something to conceal) • Eye shadow palette (with the color green, light beige and brown) • Eye shadow primer (only if you have) • Eyeliner (either black, brown or dark blue) • Mascara • Eyelash Curler • Blush/Bronzer (optional) • Light Pink lipstick/Nude lipstick

Page 8: DIY FAIRY HALLOWEEN COSTUMEjournoportfolio.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/... · Aside from Halloween being scary, it is a time to get creative, glam up and be cute for the boys

First Step:

• Moisturize and Prime your face. If you don’t moisturize, then at least prime your face so that it’ll be a smooth place to put make-up on.

Second Step:

• Put BB cream/Foundation evenly in your skin. Third Step:

• Once you have achieved an even look, conceal those dark under eye circles with your concealer and other blemishes you want to hide.

Page 9: DIY FAIRY HALLOWEEN COSTUMEjournoportfolio.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/... · Aside from Halloween being scary, it is a time to get creative, glam up and be cute for the boys

Fourth Step:

• If you have en eyelid primer, use it. As it would make the eye shadow more vibrant. If you don’t, then it is okay.

• Start by placing a beige color eye shadow to your lid. This will be your base color. Since we’re going for a more natural look, there shouldn’t be too many colors. (The red dot represents which color I used as the base)

Fifth Step:

• Grab a medium size eye shadow brush and place a brown/darker brown color to the sides of your eyelid. This will give more definition and depth to your eye. With a fluffier brush, start by blending it all in, by fluffing and buffing the color until you achieve the look you want. (the green spot is the darker brown I used in the palette)

Page 10: DIY FAIRY HALLOWEEN COSTUMEjournoportfolio.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/... · Aside from Halloween being scary, it is a time to get creative, glam up and be cute for the boys

Sixth Step:

• Get your small brush and start lining the bottom of your eye near your eyelashes with a green eye shadow.

Seventh Step:

• Grab your preferred eyeliners, and start lining your upper lid lines. Eight Step:

• Curl your eyelashes, and start by applying your preferred mascaras. Ninth Step:

• If it is part of your routine, you can either put blush/bronzer. I did not use it as I do not need to put any.

Tenth Step: • Grab your pink/nude lipstick and start putting them on your lips

Last step: • Voila! Very easy make-up!

HAIR TUTORIAL This is the simplest of them all. Just blow-dry your hair to give more volume and style it the way you want it styled. If you prefer curling your hair, go

right ahead. The more waves the better! I chose to go with a more natural look and just styled my hair the way I usually style it. OUTFIT SUGGESTIONS: You can go for something I did, a white top and a light colored skirt. You can also go for a white dress and any light colored dress. I suggest you choose something light and less distracting as it might be too crazy of an outfit. For the shoes, just use simpler things if you just want a plain outfit (flats, sandals, white sneakers) and if you feel a little bolder heels would do (just remember to choose a more neutral or within the rage of the color palate of the glitters you choose and also the make-up)

Here’s how mine turned out:
