Analysis of music magazine 1: ‘NME’

The masthead is placed clearly at the top left of the magazine and uses a clear, bold, san-font. It is made to stand out by adding an inner shadow which gives it a 3D look and by giving it a white outline and then a black outline. It uses the brands colour scheme which is also the same as the main selling lines to the right of it which links them together well.A puff has been placed just under the masthead and uses the same colours as the masthead to grab the readers attention. It uses informal language to make the reader feel more comfortable and more likely to want to buy and read the magazine.

The main image shows Dizzee Rascal, a well known music artist who will help to sell the magazine as it will interest potential readers. He is in an approachable stance and has a very happy facial expression which in turn makes readers more likely to want to pick up the magazine as it gives the magazine joyful vibes. The image is at a canted angle which connotes chaos. The Mise en Scene shows him in a room with graffiti on the wall which shows more of an urban scene. He is also wearing a chain, baggy trousers and trainers which is the normal stereotype of hip-hop. Although the image is technically a long shot photo due to the fact that his whole body is in the image however, due to the fact that he is crouching and the main focus is on this head and upper body we would class it as a mid shot. Some of these facts, such as the camera angle and clothing stereotype, show us that the genre of at least this article is hip-hop.

The sell lines match the colours used on the masthead which links them together. They tell the user that there will be somefamous stars, as it is says ‘starring’ in the magazine. The way it adds ‘& more’ makes the magazine seem even more full and interesting and worth a read.

There is a grab quote underneath the main cover line from Dizzee Rascal himself. The use of the words ‘man’ makes it more friendly and informal and therefore more approachable. The use of the word joy makes it more positive and once again makes the magazine more approachable.

The footer is at the bottom of the page and tells the reader even more information about what they can find within the magazine.

There is only one other cover line apart from the main cover line. This is because the person who designed the cover felt like the story relating to the main image was such a good selling point that other stories were not needed on the cover.

The barcode, issue number and price have all been placed in the area of empty space in the bottom right of the cover. This is necessary on all magazine covers to provide information to the shop as well as the reader.

and colours and the masthead on the front cover. This links the 2 pages together.

The main image is of an NME reporter next to a tour bus. This is because as stated underneath it, the issue is a ‘touring special’. The mid-shot of the reporter and the tour bus make it more personal and as if the reader is actually there.

The band index is down the left hand side of the page and uses sans-sarif font in two bold colours, red and black, which again link it to the colour scheme of the magazine. The page numbers to the side show the reader where to find that band so they can look at their favourite bands easily.

The contents list is done in a simple yet bold way. It looks sophisticated with its different section headings and includes page numbers and a little bit about the listed pages. It again uses the magazine colour scheme to link it with the brand.

The date of the magazine is printed clearly under the title which follows code and convention.

There is a box with other things that the reader might want to know such as how to subscribe to the magazine. It is in yellow to contrast the rest of the page and grab the readers attention to these extra things that the reader might be interested in.

The images used show what type of person the artist is and try to grab the readers attention. The background is covered in graffiti which gives the page an urban look which more people can relate to. The bottles and stereo at first glance make the reader relate these props to the artist in the image. Due to this, the mise-en-scene suggests a bit of rebellious character which people will be interested in.

The design of the page gives a feel of rebellion and mischief. Firstly, due to the image chosen but also due to the title not being clean cut and the letter not lining up exactly. This also makes the page feel more informal

The text is in big bold letters and draws attention to itself really well. It uses a play on words, changing the well know quote ‘from rags to riches’ into ‘from tags to riches’. This makes the title more familiar to the reader which interests them further.

The language used in the articles attracts the target audience due to its frequent use of slang. Also the way that ‘Dizzee Rascal’ has been made bold emphasizes the fact that he is the star in this article.
