The End of One Year…The Beginning of a New YearBeginnings and endings. At this time of year, my thoughts turn towards all of the many blessings which I am abundantly grateful for…family, friends, work, love, laughter. This year-end issue

of Destination Jeddah is a celebration of life! A celebration of this complex, vibrant city of Jeddah which I am privileged and honored to call home. From prominent Businessmen like Dr. Ghassan Al-Sulaiman to aspiring artists like Fahad Ayad, and so many other talented people contribute to the life-blood of Jeddah - we’re fortunate to reap the benefits of their vision.

A few friends of mine were recently lamenting about their perceived lack of activities here in Jeddah, which got me thinking about all the amazing op-portunities which abound around us. Be it indoors at some of the world’s most exclusive shopping venues or fine-dining destinations to the bounty of the Red Sea and the plethora of outdoor options…Jeddah is actually bursting at the seams with exciting family-friendly adventures of all kinds! Martial arts, golf, horse-back riding, go-karting; the list seems endless for those in the know. Not to mention art galleries, restaurant openings, classes in all subjects, etc - who has the time to be bored in Jeddah?

We decided to do a short article about some new dining spots of 2011, so imagine our delight when this article quickly grew to over four pages! Even more exotic cuisines and fusion restaurants are in the planning stages for 2012 - completely vindicat-ing our suspicion that Jeddah is fast becoming a gourmand’s destination. Japanese, Italian, Frozen Yoghurt…if you can imagine it, then you can find it right here, right now!

As always, our pages are full of information for the busy city-dweller, the young jet-setters, and every-one in between. As this year draws to a close, I must thank all of our loyal readers for their continuing support and feedback. Without you, there would be no magazine to record the monthly highs and lows of this marvelous city… this city which I have come to call home… Jeddah.

Thank you :)

Word on the street

Greetings, Today, my fiancé and I thought it would be nice to visit Zodiac for shisha and drinks. Since the weather is starting to be nice and lovely, we thought that Zodiac’s balcony would be the perfect choice. I’m afraid we were wrong.

First of all, after we settled down and started enjoying the cool breeze and the nice view, the waiter said that we have to have dinner and the minimum charge was 120 per person (which is a bit too much in my opinion). We weren’t hungry at all so we asked him if we could only have drinks and shisha but he strictly refused, even if we went indoors. We felt uneasy because we really weren’t hungry for a meal. Nevertheless, we couldn’t resist the lovely view and decided to stay, and after a while we ordered sushi and their famous chicken pastry with spinach konafa shells. Okay, so the dishes were poorly made, the creamy sauce was too greasy, and the waiter was too pushy all the time. It’s nice when a waiter recommends a popular dish, but it’s annoying when he makes the decision for you!

In conclusion, the minimum charge was over priced, the waiter made us feel uncomfortable, the food wasn’t as good as I remember it, and they should give people the choice of either dining in or having a relaxing shisha time. But after all... the weather and the view were amazing tonight. Luji

Dear Editor,

Greetings from Makkah. I recently got ahold of your magazine and it was very helpful as I was unaware of the restaurants and “things to do” in Jeddah. The magazine is well organized, lively and colorful, so keep up with good work. Also, on the website if you could use “Google maps”, to pinpoint the locations of the restaurants or other “Outlets”, then it would be really easy getting to the desired location.

Thank you.Mubashar

Greetings,

I first extend my warmest congratulations to the staff and management of Destination Jeddah Mag. You know what? The first thing I did when I got back from my vacation was to find a copy of your magazine. We’re happy that we are a part of the August issue. Some of my friends already have a copy from the Saudia Arabian Airlines library. We introduced this magazine to the Saudia flight attendants and they were amazed and impressed, saying that it was a total package with fashion, culture, tradition, adventure, restaurants, malls and other services found in the directory. We also shared your magazine on Facebook.

Thoughts to Ponder

Although the calibre of academics and teachers are always important factors while selecting a school for your child, the safety of your child must remain a priority. Always find out if necessary health and safety measures are implemented in your school of choice, and that they have adequate resources to tackle emergencies should the occasion arise – such as fire extinguishers and staff trained in CPR and First Aid. While the incidence of a tragedy is rare, schools with proper safety measures will set your mind at ease and

minimize the chances of your child’s safety being jeopardized. Also ensure that you keep your contact details valid and up to date on your child’s registration, so that you can be directly informed when alarming situations occur. A secure environment is imperative to both the learning and wellbeing of your child. Parental pressure can be the necessary impetus to ensure school reform - schools will quickly adopt all necessary safety measures if they see that they are losing their students to more responsible schools!

Parental pressure for better schools

Thumbs up to...

Institutions that have been licensed and inspected by the Fire Department provide us with greater reassurance. The Jeddah Knowledge School, for example, adheres to all safety and health standards stipulated by the Kingdom and runs regular fire drills with exit plans posted throughout the building. Security guards patrol the campus and the playground equipment is frequently inspected for hazards. Thanks for looking after our kids, JKS! We hope other schools will incorporate comprehensive safety measures like this too.

Schools with adequate safety measures

In light of the recent fire that occurred at a local girls’ school, several issues have been raised with regards to school safety. Schools are entrusted with not only the education, but also the welfare of our kids, and should up the ante in providing a secure atmosphere to prevent such devastating circumstances. We never want the safety of our kids to be compromised simply due to the incompetency of school staff or facilities.

Thumbs down to...Schools with inadequate safety measures

Settling In

Useful Information

Settling In…For KidsYour parents made the decision to travel halfway around the world and drop you in a foreign country, probably against your will. If you’re between the ages of 0-18…your first instinct is to complain about the heat and the absence of your friends! But instead of reveling in your misery, why not embrace the adventure of life in an exotic country – you can learn a new language, make new friends, and have a wealth of amazing stories to relate to your family and friends back home via Facebook, it all depends upon your attitude.

If you are deposited in one of the many international compounds around Jeddah, look to your neighbors to form a solid base for your new social life. BBQs, pool parties, and weekend get-togethers are all wonderful

opportunities to meet and mingle with kids of your age. Life within compounds can be as hectic or calm as you desire – you’ll find people welcome newcomers with open arms and are quick to suggest the best shops and restaurants around town

to help you settle in. Weekend bus trips and outings are convenient ways

to navigate the city if the family driver is monopolized by your parents; embrace these opportunities for independence, especially if you’re a teenager.

School life will become inordinately important to your happiness, so put a smile on your face and put your best foot forward in making a good first impression. The international student bodies at Jeddah’s many international schools guarantee that you will find someone who speaks your language and understands your situation. Bonding with your school friends is an important first step in your future happiness; invitations to the beach, parties, dinners, and shopping trips will all revolve upon your circle of friends, so cast your net as wide as possible to include a variety of interesting people! If you’re lucky enough to already have family in Jeddah, use their contacts to kick-start your social life.

Profile:Who: Dr.Ghassan Al-SulaimanWhat: Chairman of Ghassan Al-Sulaiman Holding CompanyWhere: Jeddah, Saudi ArabiaQualifications: MA in Business Administration, University of San Fransisco, 1980. PhD in BusinessAdministration, Hull University, UK, 2004

Who’sWho

With a clear mindset and a visionary approach, Dr. Ghassan Al-Sulaiman makes distinctive footprints in a variety of industries in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries. Be it retail, food and beverage, investment banking, real estate, or advertising and marketing, Dr. Al-Sulaiman has managed to establish entities that are successfully operating within their markets or are excelling as leaders with renowned names. IKEA for instance, is a retail landmark in Saudi Arabia that was launched by Dr. Al-Sulaiman in the early 1980’s. Securing the IKEA franchise was a coup which only hinted at the bright future in entrepreneurship for this ambitious businessman.

Today, Dr. Al-Sulaiman is the chairman of numerous reputable companies that are operating powerfully in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain; all exceptionally dominant brands and franchises. IKEA in furniture, Margherita and Semsom in food and beverage, Emara and Siraj Capital in real estate, Venture Capital Bank and Saudi Venture Capital in investment banking, and the list continues. All his companies carry his hallmark of his vision to capitalize upon existing business vacuums in order to create and sustain long-term business success.

The key driver behind Dr. Al-Sulaiman’s investment in these diverse industries is his ‘entrepreneurship mindset’; his passion lies in “building a company from scratch rather than getting involved in an already existing one,” as he clarifies. And up until today, Dr. Al-Sulaiman refers to himself as an ‘entrepreneur who delves into novel initiatives and takes considerable

risk’ - he personally relates to this title more than as chairman or CEO or any other position he may have held considering the nature of his professional accomplishments.Realizing that his strength is in ’finding new opportunities, fulfilling visions, and building business models’, Dr. Al-Sulaiman knew how to best leverage his skills and expertise and utilize them efficiently. “I truly add value when the business is in its early development stages, when it is at the beginning of its life cycle, regardless of the industry,” elaborates Dr. Al-Sulaiman as he modestly explains the most effective role he plays in the professional arena. “I am not an executive man,” he bluntly states; operational management of his projects is handled by his teams who excel in these tasks, leaving him the key role of strategist.

One of the essential investment strategies that Dr. Al-Sulaiman believes in and adopts is ‘to invest when people are not investing’, referring to a concept first articulated by billionaire Warren Buffett. Dr. Al-Sulaiman is currently applying this strategy in Bahrain with his new real estate investment in a mixed-use development. To this farsighted entrepreneur, his investments are generated from macro outlooks with long-term visions and a full understanding of the socio-economic dynamics at play in the constantly changing global economy.

Another innovative, macro project that Dr. Al-Sulaiman is launching soon is Al-Jazira; an all-inclusive tourism company that will offer diverse services to tourists in Saudi Arabia with a holistic approach. Considering the novelty of this sector in the country, (the Ministry of

DESTINATION JEDDAH 15

Tourism was founded within the past 10 years), there are notable opportunities for breakthrough investments. “This year, we’ve had 20 million people coming for Hajj and Umrah; yet the vast majority came and left without seeing much of what this country has to offer.” An opportunity for Al-Jazira to provide comprehensive touristic services in order to promote domestic tourism and provide a richer experience for international tourists as well? Dr. Al-Sulaiman thinks so...hence the motivation behind Al-Jazira is built first and foremost upon the certainty of his business acumen.

Aside from the commercial opportunity, Dr. Al-Sulaiman also envisions Al-Jazira’s role as fulfilling specific community service objectives that are key priorities for his country’s development. The first is diversification in economy – it has been integral for the country to develop other sectors besides oil to support the economy; and Saudi Arabia happens to be exclusively fortunate with the geographical treasures, Makkah and Madinah, which are significant landmarks that continue to attract religious tourists from around the world.

The second community service that AL-Jazira will present to the country is employment; “tourism is considered the largest employer in the world,” as Dr. Al-Sulaiman points out. Given the human- based nature of this industry, businesses operating within it actively contribute to reducing unemployment by creating jobs for people with different qualifications and skills. In addition to tackling the well-documented male

Page 18: DJ Issue 35

DESTINATION JEDDAH16

unemployment dilemma, he plans to increase the number of women in the workplace through Al-Jazira and all his other companies. It’s recognized that women can play an important role in all sectors of Saudi Arabia’s continued growth strategies.

Commitment to social development is a personal pledge to this entrepreneur. “I try to find the community benefit in my work, even if I am the only one who sees it,” he states. Regardless of the industry he is investing in, Dr. Al-Sulaiman always finds a way to serve the community while offering beneficial products or services. Al-Jazira is definitely one clear manifestation of his genuine dedication.

Serving the community is an issue on the top of his agenda, and at one point in his life he spent most of his time with non-profit organizations. However, the civil society in the country today needs to develop further in order to support NGOs. Accordingly, Dr. Al-Sulaiman realized that he can “add more value to the community through profit organizations with strong corporate social responsibility activities.”

In fact, when deciding on investing in a new business, Dr. Ghassan considers three key factors: differentiation, community service, and profitability/risk. To him, differentiation is the basic make-it or break-it of all new businesses; “ideas can be borrowed, however they have to be developed in one’s own way to ultimately create a unique offering.” As for profitability and risk, he rightfully states that “evaluating risk comes with experience” and every entrepreneur must go through a couple of failures in order to gain that expertise. The restaurant business, for example, is a deceptively risky one; it is quite common

for entrepreneurs to invest in it given the low barriers to starting up a restaurant. However, this is a challenging industry, as it is easy to enter yet challenging to maintain. Dr. Al-Sulaiman’s food and beverage company, Al-Mathaq, is behind the recent openings of Margherita and Semsom. Naysayers poised to pounce upon these new restaurants, yet since both opened their doors, their dining rooms have been overflowing with satisfied customers. Due to their differentiated concepts, they have successfully established their popularity in Jeddah’s competitive dining scene. Not one to rest upon his laurels, Dr. Al-Sulaiman is planning upon opening more restaurants under his Al-Mathaq umbrella. Four different dining concepts will be launched throughout 2012, one of which is an original bakery concept. Distinctiveness is fundamental, especially in this market, given the competitive scene and sophisticated consumer appetites. Al-Mathaq ensures that it offers novel concepts to ensure that it is always one step ahead.

Dr. Al-Sulaiman proudly confesses, “I am a workaholic. I love my work because there is always something new.” This passionate, self-made entrepreneur has recognized his innate business strengths and utilized them in his areas of interest. Although at first glance, the link between real estate, investment banking, food and beverages and his other industries may not be clear; when a true entrepreneur explains the connecting thread, outsiders can also discern his patterns of success. Since Dr. Al-Sulaiman is more concerned with the timing and reasons behind his investment descisions rather than the country or the industry, his varied business interests span global industries with equal success, proving that excellence can be achieved anytime, anywhere... it’s just a matter of vision.

CLASSIC MUSIC, CONTEMPORARY JAZZ & THE SOUNDS OF ARABIA:

A musical evening at the behest of the German Consul General, Dr. Rolf Theodor Schuster, took place on November 22 at the Italian Cultural Center. German brothers Johannes Tonio Kreusch and Cornelius Claudio Kreusch, classically trained artists of the guitar and piano, combined the European legacy of classical music and contemporary jazz. Their recent Jeddah concert invited musicians from all over Arabia to join them on the stage in a unique, musical fusion experience. Johannes débuted at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1996, while Cornelius was selected as the youngest pianist for the Concours International de Piano Jazz Martial Solal in Paris in 1989 and was one of five finalists at the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in 1994. Music lovers were able to appreciate the new sounds as the expert musicians merged the classical tradition with an Arabian flair. Artistic collaborations such as these are hallmarks of Jeddah’s international appeal and cosmopolitan audience.

The technology era has an enormous impact in breaking the barrier of distance while encouraging participation in international programs and initiatives. It sparks the passion of individuals in the international community to learn about the culture of Saudi Arabia through the variety of civil society initiatives which flourish via Facebook and Twitter.

“It is commonly known that Saudi Arabia is the source of black gold, but what else do others know about us?!” says Mohammad Bakhrieba. “This is why I decided to launch the ‘Call of Culture’ initiative, a call for individuals to take the lead in fulfilling their natural mission towards the global society.” He explains that influential initiatives are usually based on scientific studies in order to quantify goals, therefore he devised a questionnaire to measure Saudi youth’s understanding of their Saudi culture. Unfortunately, the dominance of western culture in media and social networks has resulted in misconceptions about local Saudi culture.

This idea is the first social project of an international group founded by Globcal

International to advance intellectual communication. The word ‘Globcal’ is a combination of the words Global and Local. This means that everyone has a role locally and globally; the duty to answer this global call is imperative in order to unify the world. This all volunteer project hopes to empower the youth of Saudi Arabia to communicate proudly and effectively on the world stage.

Bakhrieba first promoted the idea in Italy, then came back home and re-launched it in TEDx. The project will be launched in Naples 2.0 – International Social Innovation Conference, organized by the EU Commission for Social Development. After the project is completed, he plans to send CDs to all Saudi students abroad to learn about their culture and start their role in promoting it internationally. “It’s a BIG BANG project and we are looking forward to making it happen!” he says enthusiastically. “Just remember, every one of us has a role in the development and well being of world societies…both locally and internationally.”

Leila Al Marashi’s Art exhibition features a series of canvases derived from her popular fashion label, SugarVintage. Inspired by her Emirati heritage and celebrating her passion for 1940s vintage fashion icons, SugarVintage was founded in April 2008.

Marashi’s current exhibition, taking place at Maison Bo-M in Stars Avenue Mall, features iconic images from her ‘Turathi’ collection. She mixes elements of authentic UAE cultural heritage such as the Burqa masks, with film stars and pop culture references like Marilyn Monroe & Audrey Hepburn, fully embroidered with pearls, sequins and stones. Imaginative, playful, and irreverent creations which are delights to behold! The exhibition will run until January 2012 – a wonderful opportunity to begin the new year with some new art to grace your walls.

The group is called “Jeddah Hash House Harriers”. Originally a British social running club, Harrier clubs can be found all over the world and have evolved into a relaxed, expat-oriented weekly get-together. Personally, I’ve been a member for about a year and a half now, and have gone from a casual sight-seer to a dedicated runner in the different hills, mountains and locations we visit each week. Here is what you need to know to become a HASHer:

1 THURSDAY IS MINE!I’ve found it quite peaceful and therapeutic to dedicate Thursday of every week to this natural outing. The hike is usually a 5-7 km trail of ups and downs at various locations east and north of the borders of Jeddah. Locations include Usfan, Briman and Mersal

village. Tell everyone around you that Thursdays are yours. A great boost to clear your mind and feel that you still own part of your busy week to fill with some fresh air and beautiful people.

2 A GOOD STRETCHAnother thing I’ve come to like is guaranteeing that a week will not pass without me getting some physical activity. The age of people ranges from 7-70 yrs old. You must always remember to stretch and warm up. The trail can take a toll on your joints and body if you’re not an active person. But don’t worry, you’ll get used to it with time. I remember being out of breath after the first kilometer, but now, I strive to make sure I’m among the top 10 finishers. Don’t forget to hydrate all day long leading up to the hike as well.

ON, ON!By Rayan A. Karkadan

Hiking? In Jeddah? Like a real hike? Where…the mall? These are some of the responses I usually get when I tell people I go hiking in Jeddah. Yes, hiking - even running!

What’s even more shocking is that this Thursday marks the 1,601 consecutive week that this hike has been conducted, right here in our hometown. Let me repeat that number again: 1601 consecutive weeks. And since a large number of this group is non-Saudi, they find it amusing that Saudis living in Jeddah have not experienced a hike in their own backyard. New comers are usually greeted with smiles, a humorous Introduction ,and the question “Where have you been all this time?!“

5 FOOD AND MUSICAfter everyone has completed the course, the group usually divides into smaller groups to socialize and enjoy a casual BBQ. Firewood, meat, marshmallows, and a good ole’ guitar…nothing like some good food, good music, and good laughs with good people under the stars right here in your hometown!

ON, ON!

3 ARE YOU A LONG OR A MINI?The good people of the “HASH” go a day earlier and mark the trails with chalk to make sure it’s safe and to add a little fun. They occasionally mark the wrong ways on purpose as to mislead you. You have to find the right trail, and the first person to do so yells “On, on!” This famous phrase has become closely related to all HASHers. That being said, the HASHers mark two trails - a more family oriented ‘Mini HASH‘, and the long run, which involves longer, advanced running. I suggest newbies start with the mini to test the waters (and their physical prowess.)

4 DO YOU TEND TO TAKE THINGS SERIOUSLY?I ask this because the answer in my case is “Yes!” If you’re the competitive type, you’ll enjoy the friendly, competitive nature of your fellow HASHers, so don’t worry if your first attempt is only the mini-run, (my first was the mini as well.) However, I often went for a brisk jog during the week to improve my speed and stamina. Having so many fit hikers around really helps you get the best out of yourself.

There is no shortage of family-friendly outings in Jeddah. Amusement parks, beaches, and everything in between are available in town and most residents have become pretty familiar with what is available. There are even plenty of green parks for the enterprising families who need a little more greenery in their lives, especially in the cooler winter months when it’s positively pleasant to spend time outdoors.

In September of last year, Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu Ras introduced the mayoralty’s plan of establishing public parks throughout Jeddah. The development initiative also included plans to further improve existing parks in the city. The project was coordinated through the Parks and Beautification Department which has also been overseeing the addition of thousands of trees and other greenery in the city.

What does this mean for you and your family? Simply put, there is no simpler and more pleasant way to spend an afternoon than picnicking with family friends in a park. Over 90 parks have already been implemented in various areas and districts around Jeddah – each including a differing range of facilities such as seating areas, playgrounds, car parking, shaded areas, and football and basketball courts, so be sure to plan a visit before temperatures soar and the idea of a day spent outside starts to seem a little less appealing.

The Jeddah parks project has made it easier than ever to take advantage of Jeddah’s beauty as a city. Rather than spending all day cooped up in an over air-conditioned, underwhelming location, be creative about your outings and take your family to one of

the many parks that now proudly dot the Jeddah landscape. Pack a picnic, a deck of cards, and some toys and head out in the late afternoon when the sun is not as strong - also the perfect time to enjoy a spectacular Jeddah sunset.

The artistice sand dunes and impressive deserts of the Middle East may not immediately bring images of lush greenery to mind - but Jeddah has managed to make it possible...so why not try it out and start enjoying Jeddah’s scenic outdoors?

San Francisco has a world-famous Chinatown, London has a world-famous Southall (India/Pakistan town) …and Jeddah has Aziziyah. The largest concentration of Indians and Pakistanis in the entire Kingdom, this neighborhood has its origins in two schools which relocated to the area in the mid-1980’s. The Pakistan International School Jeddah and the International Indian School together have a student body approaching 30,000 students! As families clustered into the area in order to be close to these schools, the neighborhood took on a distinctively South Asian flavor. Today, Aziziyah is THE place to visit for authentic Indian and Pakistani food, clothing, and groceries, and the Kababish Market (named after one of the earliest Pakistani restaurants in Jeddah) is the center of Aziziyah.

Located between Amir Majed Street and Moalifeen Street, Kababish Market comes alive in the evenings when men, women, and children throng the streets to enjoy freshly fried pakoras, samosas, and jilebis (tasty meat or vegetable fritters and sweet, crispy snacks, respectively). Sidewalk vendors display their wares ranging from toys and trinkets, home goods, and the luscious fresh fruits and vegetables necessary for truly authentic regional dishes. Women crowd the fabric stores to purchase the latest designs from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, either ready-made garments or the fabrics which they can get tailored to their specifications, while single men frequent the many excellent kabab, nihari, and take-away curry stalls.

If you’ve never been to Aziziyah, prepare yourself for a step into a different culture where you will hear Urdu, Hindi, and the myriad regional dialects of the subcontinent as well as see people from all over the world. It’s a popular destination for visitors to Jeddah who are performing Umrah and Hajj – simply to enjoy a spicy meal or pick up some gift items unavailable elsewhere in the Kingdom. The famous hand-made leather slippers called ‘khussas’ can be found here, as well as glittering glass

bangles, costume jewelry, and even bridal wear to adorn both the bride and groom from head to toe. The weeks leading up to both Eids are an especially busy time as people from outlying areas such as Rabigh and Yanbu also frequent the markets in Aziziyah for all their food and shopping needs.

Beauty parlors offer intricate henna designs to decorate ladies’ hands and feet, in addition to beauty treatments from the subcontinent. Threading, waxing, turmeric face masques, hot-oil hair massage, and henna hair-dyes are just a sample of the specialties on offer. Jewelry stores stocked with gold, silver, and precious stones from the region present delicate daily wear to ornate bridal sets – Aziziyah is a one-stop shopping and dining experience where you can travel to Pakistan and India without a passport!

End your visit with a freshly-made ‘paan’ – it’s a customary treat which is popular after a meal to aid in digestion and as a breath-freshener. Made of crushed betel nuts, cardamom, spices, (sweet paan contains desiccated coconut and sugar), and herbal pastes wrapped in a betel-leaf; paan is a delicious, unique taste of the region. For those searching for a sweeter taste, try the golden, pretzel-shaped jilebis which emerge crispy from hot oil and an immersion in sugar syrup…it’s impossible to stop after just one bite.

FAHAD AYYADWhat’s Up Jeddah’s resident photographer Fahad Ayyad mostly works in his wood paneled, sound-proof, home-recording studio. His colorful collection of acoustic and electric guitars are perfectly aligned against a wall. With comfy couches and dim lighting, it looks like a classic recording studio…except that multi-talented Ayyad is switching gears from music to photography. Both remain passions of his; he has installed large lighting fixtures placed high against the walls and an interesting variety of different props fill up the shelves and corners. It’s truly an atmosphere built for creativity.

developed technically as a photographer. With his reliable Cannon 1DS Mark III, Ayyad has done personal requests, fashion spreads, and his ads are featured in the streets of Jeddah. Although usually hired for his technical skills, Ayyad prefers to be more involved. He would rather keep editing to a minimum and only what he can do in a dark room. This dedication stems from his love of the art of photography, collecting vintage cameras and his dream of having a darkroom of his own. In the future, Ayyad is hoping to create videos. It will be exciting to see what he can create with his inventiveness and motivation to simultaneously use the two mediums he loves best…music and photography

Music has been a major inspiration for Ayyad’s work, he was in a band that stood out from the heavy metal Jeddah scene. His experiences led him to explore the use of images. Ayyad’s photographs clearly show a meticulous dedication to creating and achieving a certain picture he has in his mind. Ayyad’s photographs are of things that are out of place, hazy implausible situations that are almost dreamlike. Like a perplexing collage that’s also slightly melancholic, perhaps of situations that only exist in the mind. Except they do for him, being so driven and resourceful. It could be a prop-laden story in his studio or more ambitious endeavors such as a challenging underwater adventure. It isn’t something the viewer always understands, but it is there to be seen and experienced thru Ayyad’s eyes. Within the space of a few years, Ayyad had

MOONA Al-Qahtani:Fashion Illustrator & Artist

Moona Al-Qahtani grew up in an atmosphere of freedom to explore her innate curiosity for life…a formative experience where she was afforded the opportunity and tools to pursue her passions. As an experimental artist trying out different mediums, she found school guidelines restrictive; her home was the place where she found the artistic support and freedom to thrive.

MOONA Al-Qahtani:Fashion Illustrator & Artist

Her mother, who owns a craft and sewing class shop, was her initial source of inspiration. She used to make dresses for her daughters and used patterns and cuts she would find in Vogue and McCall’s, magazines which were always around the house. Moona took cues from the world of fashion and applied her skills to oil paintings, but the efficiency and immediacy of digital art soon became attractive to her. Fashion designers such as Galliano and Vogue illustrators such as Rene Bouche and Rene Grau become her new influences.

Moona wanted to become a part of this world with its colors and she soon became a digital fashion illustrator. She found that it was a method to maximize creativity to create something real and was the foundational element of the fashion process. Her style is glamorous and luxurious, reminiscent of a time when intricate details and quality were a part of clothes. She takes her cues from old Hollywood and Egyptian cinema, touches which are transported into her modern designs. Women with bountiful constructions of lavish fabrics, sparkling, large shapes of jewelry and sophisticated up-dos are her visions of beauty.

Other works of Moona’s include graphic illustrations which exhibit the art of collaging and styling. Some of her work resembles pop art, with its cultural references, bright bold colors and print screen-like qualities. She has also leaned towards including common images from the Arab community. Her brightly colored ensembles of camels with Louis Vuitton bags and fully veiled women by an Eiffel Tower in the desert reveal a different vision of Mona’s - one with a sharp eye on social habits and a satirical sense of humor. Alongside a prolific interest in fashion illustration, Moona also exposes society’s use of beauty affectations; layers upon layers masking and covering, out-of-place styles, and clown make-up. Moona hasn’t completely abandoned making art with her hands, creating large canvas paintings using knives for experimentation. Her latest series, ‘Shanab,’ features large towering portraits of men with scraggily moustaches and colorful faces.

She updates regularly on her blog and portfolio, http://www.psychomagic.net/. It is the joy of creating art that continues to motivate her.

Colin Farell the Irish actor has always been more famous for his rowdy behavior than his fashion sense, however here it looks like he has made an effort to polish up his looks! Although it’s still part of his care-free sense of style, he is right on track with the plaid trend and he pairs it up with a neat navy cardigan.

While Alakeel’s Toby brand is well-known locally and fast becoming a presence upon the international style scene, kudos to illustrious shoe-designer Christian Louboutin for wearing a Toby shirt in the French Marie Claire’s October issue! Although Hatem has previously mentioned being a close friend of Louboutin – their acquaintance even preceding Hatem’s days as a designer – it came as a pleasant surprise when the fashion mogul exhibited his shirt for the magazine photoshoot. Hatem originally presented Louboutin with the shirt as a gift, but never expected such a thrilling response. To be endorsed by such a prominent designer has certainly been a major honour for Toby, providing the brand with further international exposure at a time when it is already receiving wide recognition abroad. Hatem

previously collaborated with Louboutin in 2009 when his models sported Louboutin shoes at Fashion Expo Arabia in the UAE. Hatem’s new line of shirts continue to convey his already well-established penchant for artistically fusing Middle Eastern and Western style into a genre all his own. Steeped in aesthetic flair, males of all ages can now enjoy Hatem’s iconic clothing and proudly join the thobe revolution – looking edgy and refined in Hatem’s contemporary twist to the traditional Arabian robe.

Hatem Alakeel, the designer behind the iconic Toby brand, continues to build up his fashion empire. 2011 saw him open a second boutique in Jeddah, heralded for both its stylish interior as well as the masterfully executed clothing adorning the hangers. In addition, he oversaw the strategic placement of his line in the Saks Fifth Avenue store in Dubai, launched his HA Design Company for corporate uniforms, and recently unveiled his new line of dress shirts...leaving fans to wonder what 2012 will bring!

Ginza i ChomeJapanese cuisine is a trend in Jeddah that shows no signs of slowing down. It certainly has come a long way this millennium with newer and more creative selections that cater to Jeddah tastes. With its increased popularity and growing demands, new Japanese restaurants are opening up, from casual to fine dining, and even delivery based. One of these restaurants which offers a great dining experience is Ginza i Chome located in the ritzy Rosewood Corniche Hotel.

As one would expect, the setting is unrivaled. Modern, yet with natural textures, the décor exudes quality, somehow reminding one of entering an Asian-inspired spa. Choose a seat at the sushi bar where Saudi Arabia’s award winning sushi chef can gratify your unique requests; or go for the “Omakase” (As Per the Chef) and let him take the lead and make something for you. A quick conversation with him and you won’t be disappointed. Or, if sitting at a bar isn’t your style, the seating for two offers a more intimate and relaxing first rate view of the Red Sea. The scenery alone during sunset will get your taste buds all wound up. Tables for more private gatherings are also available. Soft music and a

friendly and knowledgeable staff are only the beginning of the pleasantries of the outing. Servers are well-versed regarding the items on the menu, as well as having impeccable timing.

They offer many classic sushi rolls such as California and Unagi, as well as twists tosome favorite items. Instead of a miso soup, we tried a pumpkin soup infused with Japanese flavors. Creamy, yet subtle, it was a flavor that can only be experienced here. A shredded cucumber and crab salad in a light dressing leaves you wanting more. Also, if eating raw fish isn’t your cup of tea, this would be the place to brave up and give it a try. It’s all extremely fresh and of a high-

quality. The salmon and tuna sashimi are like butter and practically melt in your mouth. As with true Japanese restaurants, there is no smoking at this restaurant, as it compromises the integrityof the sushi, so don’t expect to sit next to any smokers or find shishas anywhere. Choices for a main course include different tempuras, teppenyakis, teriyakis and noodles, so the variety is offered for those who don’t fill up on sushi alone. Or, starting this December, go for the All-You-Can-Eat Sushi, and really get your money’s worth! For dessert, the banana tempura arrives warm, drizzled with a berry sauce, and served with a scoop each of vanilla and

chocolate ice cream. You will find that it is the perfect end to a satisfying meal.

With all of the competition sushi restaurants are facing, Ginza i Chome stands out as a must-try for sushi and sashimi lovers. More on the pricier side, yet definitely worth the experience as the focus is on the quality of the ingredients as well as on the impeccable service. Treat your loved ones to a superior dining experience. This place is fast becoming THE place for quality Japanese food in Jeddah.

There is frozen yoghurt…and then there is Pinkberry. This gourmet, luscious brand from California carries the superstar touch as it’s the frozen yoghurt of choice among Hollywood stars. Pinkberry is Here!!

Non-fat, but full of exquisite flavor, Pinkberry comes in six mouth-watering flavors: Original, Chocolate, Passion Fruit, Pomegranate, Mango, and Coconut. Rich in calcium, vitamins and minerals, yoghurt gourmands can customize their serving with the addition of toppings ranging from fresh fruit, decadent chocolate, nuts, or crushed

cookies. “Pinkberry brings a fresh and appealing new taste experience to

KSA and we are delighted to open our first store here in Jeddah,” said Nader Hallal, Head of Marketing for the brand. “We are sure that Pinkberry will win the

hearts of local consumers.”

Pinkberry is headquartered in California with a large number of outlets spread across Southern California and New York and a

strong fan base among Hollywood stars. The first Pinkberry store was introduced to the Gulf region in Kuwait in 2009 and is now widely available throughout the Middle East. The concept began in 2005 when co-founders Shelly Hwang, a restaurateur, and Young Lee, a Parsons-trained designer with a fascination for desserts and frozen treats, blended past inspirations from an Italian gelato store with fond memories of mixing fruit with soft serve at a Hawaiian pineapple plantation. Pinkberry is made with real non-fat milk and real non-fat yogurt, among many other natural ingredients, that gives it a refreshing, tart taste. It’s more than just a dessert…it’s a social experience.

SAKURADeriving its name from the Japanese cherry blossom, the Crowne Plaza’s Hotel new Japanese restaurant Sakura embodies every aspect of its namesake – charming, elegant and unique. Japanese cuisine at its best, Sakura delivers high-quality dishes in a refined, contemporary atmosphere. Formerly located on the mezzanine floor of Crowne Plaza, the restaurant has been recently renovated and relocated to a premiere position in the hotel where it is now accessible from the street and thus convenient to diners who are not hotel guests.

Sakura’s interior is both contemporary and upscale, featuring a sushi bar and skilful attention to every detail. This is evident throughout the restaurant, from its matchless décor to elaborate table settings. It boasts an extensive menu with vibrant pictures of each individual dish, providing visual examples of the culinary delights that await the diner. Aside from the regular varieties of sushi and teppanyaki, Sakura has made its menu distinctive by offering dishes such as Japanese curry and a simmering ‘hot pot’, complex dishes not found in other Japanese restaurants in Jeddah.

Although only in its soft opening stages, Sakura’s service is exemplary, with waiters eager to satisfy and possessing insightful knowledge into each dish served. Its grand opening is currently scheduled for early February, and Sakura already displays the

vivid potential to become one of the city’s favourite food hubs for Japanese cuisine, with its enticing ambience and exotic menu.

Three friends and I went out for tea and dessert to Chai N Ba, but as soon as we walked in the manager said, “No, no…we don’t have shisha.” I don’t know why he im-mediately assumed that we wanted shisha, so we assured him that we didn’t want any. He then proceeded to inform us that there is a minimum charge of 50SR! We agreed to his odd demand, but when we tried to order, the waiter informed us that they had ran out of everything except 3 or 4 types of panini sandwiches (no dessert, no pizza, no nothing else!) So we ordered tea for 16SR.

When we asked for our bill, we were shocked to receive a bill for 200SR…just for tea! I called the manager and asked him how he could charge us for that amount when his restaurant didn’t even have most of their menu items available. He was very rude and responded, “That’s how we are. We only have sandwiches – which one do you want?” I replied that we had wanted tea and dessert; if he wanted to charge us the minimum cover charge, then he should have had ALL the menu items available, otherwise don’t have the nerve to overcharge us just for tea. He then complained about his rent and overhead and told us “Nobody is forcing you to stay here.” So we left 20SR to cover our tea. He quizzed us before we left to check if we had paid, then sent a waiter to our car to return our money with the message, “The manager says he doesn’t want your money.”

Although we heard they just closed for reno-vation or maybe even permanently, that’s not an excuse to have such a bad experience.

The Zamzam well is located approximately 20m east of the Kaaba. Electric pumps draw the water, which is available throughout the Masjid al-Haram, via water fountains and dispensing containers. Since then, millions and millions of pilgrims coming for Hajj and Umrah from every part of the world have not only drank it to their heart’s content, but also carried it with them back to their homes. Despite the long years and heavy usage, the well remains clean with steady levels – a miracle of the desert. The well has never been infected by germs or microbes, nor has it been polluted by floodwater or drainage. No one has ever contracted any disease whatsoever over the ages due to harmful bacteria in the water.

“Zamzam is the best water on the face of the Earth,” according to Dr. Hamdi Saif, a professor of Alexandria University who has conducted extensive research of the chemical and physical properties of Zamzam water. He found that it contains the perfect balance of electrolytes and also essential trace minerals that are vital for good health. Zamzam water is believed useful in aiding the treatment of kidney and heart diseases, eye problems, migraine headaches, and a number of other chronic conditions. “Unlike any other water, Zamzam contains appreciable amounts of calcium, magnesium, and fluoride,” said Saif.

A Contemporary Miracleof TheWell ZAMZAM:

By Habib Shaikh

Visitors to Makkah invariably depart this holy city with containers full of water. But this is no ordinary water; Zamzam water is considered one of the miracles bestowed upon the land. It started gushing out nearly 4,000 years ago in a spontaneous way to meet a dire need. The story began when Prophet Ibrahim set forth on a mission and left his wife Hajar and baby son Ismail in the barren lands of the Makkan valley upon God’s command. When they ran out of water, Hajar feared her young son would die of hunger and thirst, so she frantically ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa in search of water. She ran between these points seven times (a journey which is recreated by pilgrims to Makkah during the Sai), only to discover that a bubbling spring of fresh water had sprung up from the ground where Ismail had struck his heel! Muslims believe that upon God’s command, Archangel Jibril caused the Zamzam spring to provide sustenance for Hajar and Ismail. The name of the well comes from the phrase Zomë Zomë, meaning ‘stop’, a command repeated by Hagar during her attempt to contain the spring water.

Q&A

DJ’s Beauty Editor Nilo shares her knowledge and expertise with our readers. Her goal is to impart confidence, share tips, revamp beauty routines, and let you in on Jeddah’s latest beauty news and great finds - enjoy!

A: Many women end up adding more powder to their face to make themselves look fresh and at times it ends up looking cakey and overdone. Don’t add more makeup until you’ve sprayed your face with some mineral water, rose water or a hydration spray. Then separate a tissue and gently blot. Then proceed with applying your lipstick, blush, concealer or powder. This will help to avoid the “dry” look and give you a fresh face! Try Givenchy’s Mist Me Gentle Spray

Beauty Tip !For red lips that don’t look retro, fill in lips with a red pencil, add a clear balm and blot for the perfect natural red lip color.

Is Keratin Hair Treatment Safe?

Thick, frizzy coarse hair can be hard to maintain. Women are always looking for easy solutions to tame their unruly hair...especially in Jeddah’s humid environment. Keratin is an expensive but popular treatment not only in Jeddah, but all over the world. Little do people know that all Keratin treatments, including Brazilian blow dry and Brazilian Keratin Treatments, contain a straightening agent called formaldehyde which is a chemical typically used for preserving bodies and cigarettes! Formaldehyde may straighten the hair, but it can be dangerous to your skin, respiratory tract, cause hair loss and has even been linked to cancer. There are no formaldehyde-free formulas for straightening hair on the market – no matter what they say – so beware. If you still decide you must get it done, please ensure you wear a mask, close your eyes and try not to inhale the fumes.

FACT: Hair treatments are unregulated.

No health agency regulates ingredients in cosmetics - it’s up to the manufacturers to police themselves. The profit motive rarely takes consumer safety into consideration.

FACT: Keratin Treatments cannot work without Formaldehyde

Many companies claim their products are Formaldehyde-free, but they still

contain glycol or formalin (which becomes formaldehyde gas after

being heated or dried). Even the Brazilian Blow-dry (which

claims to be Formaldehyde-free) still contains over 12% of the chemical.

Many women dream of soft silky “Pantene Pro-V” model hair. But if the reality is that you have curly, frizzy or coarse hair - don’t ruin your hair by trying to permanently change it; invest in a top of the line hair straightener and smoothing/styling products to work with what you already have.

Let’s face the FACTS

FACT: Formaldehyde is toxic. Period. This chemical can cause short-term irritation to the eyes and upper respiratory tract. Long-term effects include possible links to nasal cancer and leukemia according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Many women claim hair loss due to repeated treatment. Many universities studying the effects of this chemical including Berkeley say, “All products containing it should be banned.”

4. Once the water in the cans is frozen, take the cans out and start to hammer out the dotted designs. (The ice inside the cans acts as resistance, so the can won’t crumple or dent when you hammer it.)5. When you finish hammering out your designs, run the cans under warm water to melt the ice.6. Give the cans a coat of bright paint, then let them dry7. Insert a candle and light them up - they are beautiful in the house or garden.photos courtesy of homemademamas.net

Last month, Ford Middle East honoured the recipients of its 2011 Conservation and Environmental Grants, with 12 projects receiving a total of US$100,000 in a ceremony held in Dubai. This year’s projects include volunteerism to collect and segregate plastic waste in Kuwait, saving coral reefs in the UAE, and many more.

Each year, Ford Grants makes US$100,000 available to individuals and non-profit groups with projects in nature preservation, environmental education and conservation engineering. The programme is open to applicants from KSA and other gulf countries.

For more information about Ford Grants, supported by UNESCO, visit www.me.ford.com.

What you need: 1. The design template.2. A sharp nail. The bigger the nail the bigger the holes.3. A clean tin can. The template is made for a 4.5 inch tall can.4. Scissors.5. An old rag. You really only need this if you’re working on cement. It helps keep your can from getting scratched up.6. A hammer. 7. Tape.

Method: 1. Wash the cans, remove the labels, and smooth any rough or jagged edges.2. Using the marker, mark out designs using dots and lines. Be as creative as you’d like!3. Fill the cans with water until they are almost full, then put the cans in the freezer.

Turn unwanted cans into beautiful lanterns using this safe and easy technique. Start collecting tin cans of different sizes because once you see how pretty these little lanterns are...You’ll be busy making them for all your friends and family!

Food-savvy Jeddahwis know that consuming at least five servings of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis is the smart way to long-life and good health…but did you know that you can quickly and easily satisfy a serving with a daily glass of delicious fresh juice? Fresh fruit juice bars can be found all over Jeddah and offer a mind-boggling variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables available for immediate juicing. Purists enjoy their one-flavor juices while adventurous types request custom-made mixes (ever tried apple/grape, carrot/watermelon, or banana/kiwi?!)

Juice should be consumed immediately or by the end of the day in order to maximize vitamin and mineral absorption. Freshly juiced fruits and vegetables also contain vital enzymes which trigger the body’s digestive and immune systems to operate at maximum efficiency. While juice is lacking in the fiber found in whole fruits and vegetables, the immediate benefits of regular consumption is evident in higher energy levels, a stronger immune system, and improved skin clarity.

For a start, don’t expect all green teas to taste the same, just because they’re all one color doesn’t mean that they’re identical. Different kinds of green tea have different flavors depending on the type of leaves selected and how they were processed. Popular for its fresh, light flavor, green tea can be drank hot or cold and is a fashionable flavoring for ice creams, soft drinks, and even as a spice.

Green tea’s medicinal properties have also been proven anecdotally as well as scientifically. It’s known to lower the risks for a wide range of diseases, from simple infections to chronic degenerative conditions such as cardiovascular disease and even cancer. It may also help prevent or slow weight gain by limiting fat absorption in the body; hence it’s recent popularity as THE weight loss drug of the 21st century.

A version of green tea called ‘matcha’ is made from the powder of ground green tea leaves. Originally from Japan, matcha can be bitter for those unaccustomed to its bitter taste. However it is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, fiber and chlorophyll. Tea drinkers all over the world are making the switch from black to green – experience the rejuvenating properties of green tea for yourself.

green tea: Overhyped or Nature’s Miracle Drink?

Green tea originated in China thousands of years ago and spread throughout East Asia. It’s now the drink de rigueur all over the world…but does it really deliver on all its life-extending promises?

Game of Thrones is the first book in his ambitious A Song of Fire and Ice series – 5 books and counting. Already made into a vivid HBO series, this saga of kings, princesses, dragons and magic isn’t your typical fantasy novel. It’s more like a fascinating soap opera set in an alternate reality; a world where greed, ambition, and honor motivate the characters.

Lord of the Rings fans will welcome this series as a gripping return to a finely detailed world, while Harry Potter fans will appreciate the independence of the young heroes and heroines who battle for survival in a hostile world. Martin’s writing style is unique – he devotes chapters to different characters so that you move through the story from differing points of view. Once you become vested in the story-line of a character, you can’t wait for them to reappear and take up the thread of the narrative once more!

Blockbuster book sales in the US and England have critics hailing Martin as the ‘American Tolkien’. While Martin sometimes gets bogged down with excruciating personal genealogies, his story is gripping. The HBO series is lush and dramatic; fascinating viewing which will have you impatient for the 2nd season.

REVIEW

Never trust a pretty girl with an ugly secret. Teen drama/mystery involves Aria, Emily, Spencer, and Hannah reunited and they have constantly been receiving messages (usually via cell phone text) from the anonymous “A”, who knows all the four girls dark secrets. They believed it was their missing best friend, Alison who also shared her secrets. However her corpse is found, yet again “A” continues stalking and watches their every move.

CAROL KEYROUZNINTENDO WII! is the

only interactive video game that requires you to be active

and therefore makes the games fun and entertaining

for the whole family! Wii Fit is an excellent way to keep fit and healthy as it records

your daily activities and provides you with a virtual

personal trainer! Wii Resort helps both you and your kids

engage in some physical activity while making it super fun. Creating your

own Wii characters makes it entertaining as you

DJ Staff Pick of the Month

WALAA AL-ATTAS For the past few years I have tried many different scrubs and finally i found a good one! St.Ives apricot scrub made my skin so soft and the oiliness went away. Yes, the beads are kinda big- that’s why you have to be very gentle when you use it so it won’t leave your face irritated. I love this product and I don’t think that I’ll ever switch to another scrub. Not too expensive, pretty package, and works beautifully removing dead skin cells and dirt.

NAZEEHA JACOBSMAC’s Studio Moisture Tint has recently become one of my favourite make up products. It evens out skintone while hydrating the skin, and feels soft and light on my face. With SPF 15 protection included, it really has all the characteristics of a good facial product packed into one. It comes in a variety of shades making it great for all skintones.

RASHAD KKMy pick of the month

is the 2011 Ducati Diavel - it’s a dramatic

departure for the Italian manufacturer known

for their sport-oriented bikes. Translating to

“devil” in English, the Diavel combines

sportbike powertrain and lightweight construction

with a cruiser-like layout.A Carbon model is 7

pounds lighter, and has carbon fiber trim and

lighter weight Marchesini wheels.

Just like the blooming cherry blossoms it is named after, Sakura, Jeddah's foremost Japanese restaurant is once again in full bloom in a new location and decor, as well as a new chef.

Chef Ho Dinh son, who's culinary experience spans eighteen years spent between Japan and Vietnam, has been flown in to titillate the most discerning palates with the best that Japanese cuisine has to offer.
