What is a NSN?

• A National Stock Number or also known as a NATO Stock Number (NSN) is the official label applied to an item of supply that is repeatedly procured, stocked, stored, issued, and used throughout the federal supply system.

• Today there are over 7 million active NSNs in the Federal Supply System.

• NSN data is stored in the Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS)

National Stock NumberIf NSNs somehow disappeared, we’d be in trouble. We could still place and fulfill orders based on the manufacturer’s part number, but managing those items through the supply chain would be a time-consuming process because our logistics systems and those of the services are all designed around NSNs.

NSN – Single Item Of Supply

Problem…multiple stock numbers, weapon systems, and names resulted in multiple buying activities and lack of interoperability / asset visibility

Solution…A single catalog system as the DOD item master,Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) and a

single item of supply identification “National Stock Number”

is structured for a NATO country as well as determining the 5th and 6th digit of a NSN

• Valid and authorized requirement for an item has been identified as needed:– Provisioning; a new weapon system is deployed by

a military service – Demand Planning; a non-stocked item is

repeatedly ordered– Requested by an authorized submitter

• Military Services and Federal Agencies will process the request for cataloging action IAW DoD policies and procedures

• Private industry, i.e. Manufacturers and Distributors must be sponsored by one of the below authorized submitters:

– DOD Component– Federal/Civil agency– International partner– Contractor Supported Weapon Systems

• Manufacturers and Distributors are NOT authorized to submit their CAGE and Part Number to DLA to be added to the NSN or request a NSN

Service NSN Request Process• All SSR (Supply Support Requests) for NSN

assignment or maintenance to an existing NSN will come systemically from the military service to DLA– Air Force: Submit a Base 86 (form) within their

D043/D143 system; Reason Code 1 (Request for NSN Assignment)

– Army: Submit SSR online at: http://www.peosoldier.army.mil/sep/

– Navy: Submit SSR online at: www.navy311.navy.mil

– Marines: Submit SSR to LOGCOM Customer Support– Authorized Service Cataloging Agents: Submit SSR via

DLA E-CAT (electronic cataloging) web portal

Each service has a supply and/or maintenance section to assist the service member in processing NSN requests for your CAGE and Part Number

DLA Troop Support uses the Tailored Logistics Support Program (TLSP) as a procurement vehicle to use commercial industry capabilities to efficiently acquire Fire & Emergency Services Equipment (FESE) and Special Operational Equipment (SOE).

Allows procurement under contract as opposed to a NSN buy.
