DMDG Round Up February 2017

DMDG ROUND UP

It is a genuine honour for me to be the

DMDG Chairman this year. It was exactly 30

years ago this year that I started my career in

DMPK and when I attended my first DMDG

training course in 1989 and first Open

Meeting in 1991, I quickly became in love

with it! I never believed back then that I

would one day become Chairman of such a

fantastic and important society. It is

certainly my intention, along with a brilliant

committee, to continue the great work of

previous Chairmen to constantly evolve and

improve the DMDG and deliver great quality,

good value for money events in 2017 for our

members.

We certainly have a fantastic and packed

programme of events for you this year, with

3 short meetings of diverse topics, 3 training

courses (including a brand new one) and, of

course, our ‘flagship’ Open Meeting which I

personally think will be one to remember

this year. Please do take some time to read

on and get some information on these

events and for an update on other matters

relating to your DMDG.

Technology is all around us and has certainly moved at quite a pace

since I started my career way back in the early 90’s; I remember

having to share a single computer with my colleagues and plotting

data with graph paper and a flexi rule! Nowadays recent advances in

technology provide greater ways to communicate and can be more

immediate than email. Therefore we are announcing 2 new ways to

keep in touch and share information in addition to the existing

website (www.DMDG.org) and our LinkedIn page (https://

www.linkedin.com/groups/4163095).

The first of these is an official DMDG twitter account

(@DMDG_Tweets) started in June of last year and the second is our

Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/342456192762595/).

Our aim is to use these forms of social media to keep you up to date

on our activities and to share useful links that are pertinent to our

members such as training courses and meetings plus upcoming

deadlines for registrations or abstract/poster/presentation

submissions. During the recent DMDG/GMP Open Meeting in Paris

last October we started using the Twitter and Facebook feeds to

share further information related to the agenda, speakers, travel

problems and even event photos. Welcome to those members that

have joined us already but we would encourage our members to

start following us on Twitter and Facebook.

Some of you may have noticed that our website has

undergone some changes. We hope that you like the more modern

feel and easier navigation. Our aim is to provide a more user friendly

site where some information can be accessed without the need to log

in such as the newly updated rules, our sponsors and meeting

announcements, whilst more detailed information can be accessed

with your user details (examples include job vacancies posted by our

members and detailed information for each DMDG event). Some of

the new improvements to the website include the DMDG Tweets

Twitter feed on the home page for those without Twitter accounts

and links to the Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

We are sure that many of you are familiar with Facebook and LinkedIn

but as some of the committee members had never used Twitter (they

shall remain nameless for now), here is a simple guide for anyone new

to Twitter. Further information can also be found on the Twitter help

pages.

How do I join Twitter?

Twitter can be accessed by the web (https://twitter.com), or using a smart phone and downloading the Twitter App, or going to https://m.twitter.com using a smart phone.

How do I get an account? 1. Find the Sign up box or go directly to https://twitter.com/signup.

2. Enter your name, phone number and password and click Sign Up for Twitter

@mention By placing the @ symbol in front of a username, you can tag another user in your tweet

@reply By starting your tweet with @username, you can reply publicly to a single user

Direct Message (DM) A private message to a user on Twitter that is already following you

Follower A follower is someone who follows you on Twitter and will see your updates on their feed

Retweet (RT) A way to share a tweet from another user’s account

Hash Tag (#) By using the # symbol in front of any word or phase will tag your tweets. Clicking on the # word or phrase will show all tweets using that # term

After another successful joint

Open Meeting with the GMP in Paris last

year, we continue to look for opportunities

to collaborate with like-minded learned

organisations. In May we are holding a joint

short meeting with the RSC – Biological and

Medicinal Chemistry Sector and SCI – Fine

Chemicals Group on the topic of

Transporters in Drug Discovery and

Development and later in the year we are

linking up with a group to hold a meeting on

Skin Metabolism. We are already in the

planning stages of the 2018 Open Meeting

which we hope will be another joint meeting

with a different DMPK society in a major

mainland European city. Watch this space

for more news later in the year!

I look forward to meeting you at a DMDG

event this year.

DMDG Round Up February 2017

Last year saw our 2nd joint meeting with the GMP in Paris entitled ‘Back to Le Futur of Drug Metabolism and Disposition’.

We had a record number of delegates at Espace Saint Martin, which contributed to a great atmosphere and along with the high quality scientific presentations the meeting was a great success. The meeting started with Prof. Zoltan Takats, our key note speaker from Imperial College London, who shared his perspective on mass spectrometric imaging.

The poster blitz at the end of day 1 was an excellent opportunity for PhD students to present new findings and get feedback from the highly qualified researchers from audience. The session was informative, efficient, interesting and entertaining by facilitating excellent communication between the speakers and the audience.

Over the 3 days we had 24 great presentations, covering areas from modelling through to regulatory aspects of drug development. On day 2, our 2nd Key note speaker was Prof. Michael Eddleston, from University of Edinburgh, who gave an engaging talk around the The TeGenero and Bial trials and the importance of pharmacology for taking medicines safely into humans.

The Gala dinner was held at M.Georges where the delegates and committee members continued their networking amidst jazz music and canapes. This year the open meeting will be in Cambridge, UK and look out for the 2018 open meeting where we hope to be visiting another mainland European location.

We are pleased to be running a brand new training course this year – Introduction to Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic Concepts. This is already proving to be a very popular course with the last few places remaining, so act quickly if you’d like to take part.

The Large Molecules course has recently been updated to include the most recent developments in this area. Find out more about the analysis, quantification and immunogenicity of these molecules, as well as their use in immunoassays and LC-MS plus how to assess PKPD relationships. Registration opening soon.

Our final course in 2017 is the ever-popular Fundamentals course, which gives a broad introduction to the DMPK sciences - perfect for those just beginning their careers in DMPK. Registration is now open.

Further details of all courses and meetings can be found on the DMDG website, or can be obtained by emailing [email protected].

Don’t forget, all of our training courses are now part of a Continued Professional Development (CPD) programme run in conjunction with the Royal Society of Biology (RSB). All those attending our meetings and courses this year can receive points which will contribute to their CPD profile. This CPD framework is not just limited to DMDG courses but all other courses accredited by the RSB (which includes ~80 different scientific training organizations). Skills obtained in day-to-day working life, e.g. giving a scientific presentation, mentoring a colleague, writing papers, can also contribute to your CPD profile. This means that DMDG members can plan and structure their own development whilst enhancing their employability and promotion prospects. To take advantage of this programme and begin collecting CPD points, it is necessary to join the Royal Society of Biology as an individual member. The annual cost will depend on the level of entry - affiliate (£66), associate (£74), member (£85 to £124 dependent on experience) and Fellow (£174). DMDG members will receive a 50% discount on these rates for the first two years. In addition, the DMDG would like to sponsor 10 memberships for a 2-year period. To apply for this offer, please complete the application form by clicking on this link —

DMDG Round Up February 2017

After a very successful training and event program in 2016 the DMDG finances are in a strong position. We

now have sufficient funds in place to cover us financially if for any reason we had to default on an Open

meeting or other courses. This has been possible by generous contributions from our sponsors and also

careful budgeting from course tutors and meeting organizers.

A challenge we faced last year was to carefully consider our position with regard to VAT registration and

take action as appropriate. Having taken further advice on this issue it turns out that the DMDG can be

considered VAT exempt. This is because we have no shareholders and members do not benefit financially

in the event of the DMDG ceasing activities. We need to consider what happens to any residual DMDG

funds in the event that the organization ceases activities, our current proposal is that residual funds would

be transferred to a kindred group or charity. Subject to membership approval we would propose updates

to the rules this year to indicate the fate of residual funds in the event of closure.

20th – 22nd September 2017—Robinson College, Cambridge, UK

Missed Paris in 2016? Or are you missing Paris

2016, as it was so great you can’t wait for the

next one!? Fear not, we are now planning the

2017 Open Meeting back at our ‘home-base’ of

Robinson College, Cambridge. The strap-line

reflects the fact that we will be using an ‘old’

tried, tested and successful venue, but there

will be a major new aspect this year in that we

will be utilising a brand new conference facility

within the grounds of the college.

The Crausaz Wordsworth Building (above and left) will be the

hub of this year’s Open Meeting with registration, main

poster session, trade exhibition and associated drinks

reception (no more slumming it in a marquee!), tea/coffee

and lunch breaks held here on the first 2 days of the

meeting. Any oral parallel sessions will also be taken in this

building. Plenary oral sessions will be held in the auditorium

in the main college as in previous years. As usual this Open

Meeting will be fully residential with the price including accommodation, all meals and some drinks, so will

represent an excellent value for money conference.

Registration will be opening soon, so please register ASAP to take advantage of the early bird rate. Come along,

get involved in the sessions with presentations and discussion, and encourage your colleagues to do the same,

for what we are confident will be another great DMDG scientific event!

The scientific organising committee for the 2017 meeting has been formed. If you are interested in presenting a

scientific poster or presentation, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected] to place you in contact with

the organisers.
