DMSC SHORT SHOTS ● The next meeting is January 24. There will be a surprise guest speaker. That means that, as of the publication deadline, no one is lined up. However, that has never stopped us from coming up with an interesting topic at the last minute. See you there. ● Tom Kramer, 5-Stand program manager, reports he has received the new transmitters and receivers for the set up and the operation should run smoothly this spring. In related news, DMSC has joined the PA Sporting Clays Association ● A note to black powder shooters: your sight- ins can be done from the benches on the lower pistol range, then confirmed with offhand shooting at the same location. This protocol is not available on the upper bench rest range because offhand shooting is pro-hibited to maintain the integrity of the target frames and backstops. ● The club logo is being redesigned to make it cleaner, crisper, and more relevant to club activities. The preliminary design is shown below, with the old logo shown for contrast.

DMSC 9-0 AT THE HALFWAY MARK ! The DMSC PSRL team book-ended the holi-days with two wins. The team delivered an early Christmas present with a win over a short-handed Murrysville team for the second time this season with a 1475 to 1177 score. Jason Piatt led DMSC with a 298.

In the first match of the New Year, the team shot a season low 1467, but still managed to beat Green Valley by 34, behind Dean Trew’s 297. DMSC took the Irwin make-up 1475- 1393, with Dean and Jason firing 298. Miles Ford’s 292 put him in the scorebook for the first time this year. Juniors Dominique Tho-mas, and D.J. and Greg Gerner were also able to get on the firing line. The big win came against Frazier-Simplex. DMSC shot its highest team score ever in beating the defending champs for the second time this season 1488-1484. Dean, Fritz Hem-pelmann and Tom Gerner shot 298, backed up by Rick Janoski and Jason at 297. It was good to see Club legends Mike Eddy and Earl Taylor show up as good luck charms.

MEETING NOTES FROM THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S LEAGUE AND THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S AND CONSERVATION LEAGUE (Delegates Mike Yanchak and Bob Kirsopp) Last fall, to encourage greater participation by area sportsmen, the ACSL established at

large memberships for individuals. At the December meeting, the league swore in Harry Lewellyn as an at-large member. As an active mem-ber of DMSC, Harry has spent a great

amount of time tracking legislative issues. In the accompanying photograph, that’s Harry on the left during the swearing-in ceremony. You know it’s him because he won’t wear white after Labor Day. Wildlife Conservation Officer Beth Fife pro-vided the following info points: √ The preliminary bear harvest count is 2366 (See additional information on page 10 under PGC News.) √ Porcupine quills found in skunks and rac-coons indicated the presence of rabies √ Anterless deer hunting is on in 2B until January 26 √ Thirty-five elk were harvested Beth also clarified the Mentoring Program re-quirements regarding tagging requirements. Sidenote: The National Wild Turkey Federa-tion selected WCO Fife as Conservation Offi-cer of the Year for PA. She is eligible for the NWTF national award in February. Waterways Conservation Officer Larry Fur-long reported grant awards of $2500 are available for grades K-12. Teachers can apply for this grant for fishing and aquatic education programs.

PENNSYLVANIA GAME COMMISSION NEWS PRELIMINARY BEAR HARVEST MOVES TO NINTH PLACE With an additional 291 bears taken during the extended bear season that was open last week in certain parts of the state, Pennsyl-vania Game Commission preliminary harvest reports accounted for 2,356 bears, which moves this year's harvest into ninth place in state bear harvests. Updated preliminary re-sults also now show that the second-ever, two-day archery bear season resulted in a harvest of 41, and the statewide three-day season resulted in a harvest of 2,024. Offi-cial total bear harvest figures for all three sea-sons won't be available until early 2008, after a detailed review of the each harvest report is completed. "While this year's bear kill is down from the 2005 and 2006 seasons, hunters still regis-tered an impressive harvest," said Mark Ternent, Game Commission bear biolo-gist. "This year's harvest falls in line with the harvests of 1998 through 2004." HUNTERS CAN BEGIN TO APPLY FOR SECOND SPRING GOBBLER TAG Beginning Jan. 1, Pennsylvania hunters who would like the opportunity to harvest a second spring gobbler could apply for a second spring gobbler license. Applications for the second spring gobbler license are available on page 38 of the 2007-08 Pennsylvania Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations, which is provided to each license buyer, or by going to the agency's website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), and clicking on "Spring Turkey Tag App." in the center of the homepage. Fees set by state law for the special license are $21 for resi-dents and $41 for nonresidents. Mailed appli-cations for special wild turkey licenses must be sent to: Pennsylvania Game Commission, Special Spring Gobbler License, P.O. Box 61317, Harrisburg, PA 17106-1317. The application period closes on April 1, so

that all applications can be processed and li-censes mailed to hunters in time for the spring gobbler season, which is set for April 26-May 26. PENNSYLVANIA FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION NEWS The Commission listed the approved waters that it will stock for winter fishing. Following is the county schedule for some nearby loca-tions.
