Provide a concise project description in the following box (one page maximum). Include the significant aspects of the project and their relationship to the judging criteria.

The Tanglewood Grille is one of the premier eateries recently added toTerminal E of the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston Texas. The vision for this open-framed steak house was developed by renowneddesigners who managed to bring a modern aesthetic to a traditionalstructural form. As the engineer of record for this project, Mulhern + Kulpwas tasked with developing innovative structural solutions to help bring theambitious concept to life.

Tanglewood’s primary structure is constructed of 49 aluminum trussesfinished to look as though they were framed with timber members. Thetrusses are each approximately 25 feet tall by 20 feet wide and areconnected to one another with a series of 14 continuous 3-in diameterpipes. These pipes act as the collector mechanism for the lateral system, support intermediate trusses (that are suspended above the main seatingarea), and serve as the main electrical conduits for the space.

The aluminum trusses are each designed to resist in-plane lateral loads, while the longitudinal lateral forces experienced by the structure areresisted by two multi-bay steel moment frames (one at each end), that havebeen hidden within the back-bar bottle displays. A combination of rubbergaskets and catalyzed acrylic polyurethane paint was utilized to preventgalvanic action at points of interaction between dissimilar metals.

The Tanglewood Grille is located above a pit framed into the concoursefloor that once housed a motorized people mover (conveyor system). Aspart of our scope of work, Mulhern + Kulp also designed infill framing thatcould adequately support the proposed structure with minimal impact to theexisting superstructure. This task was made more complicated by the needto share the tight space in the pit with several ducts, pipes, and conduits.

An intricate concept, an aggressive schedule, and several on-siteconstraints unique to aviation facilities all demanded an exceptionallycreative approach to our structural design. Through our ingenuity of design, and the dedication of the entire design team, the ambitious conceptintroduced at the onset of this project has been fully realized as it wasoriginally intended.
