Welcome to Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown merchants, restaurants, and

hotels in partnership with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is to communicate to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown has to offer. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful green spaces, and more. The redevelopment vision of the City of Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally as an example of a ‘state-of-the-art’ community in which to live, work, and play… which serves in itself as a national attraction.”

Mission accomplished.Downtown Greenville is home to more than 90 shops and 90 restaurants. If you can’t find it

here, chances are it can’t be found! Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all things local. Shop local.

Eat local. Support local. When you shop local, you help support our community. Many of our friends, neighbors, and families are employed by, or own, these businesses that bring special products, services, and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment to shop local this holiday season and know the joy of supporting our community – one of the greatest gifts of all.

Thank you to the Peace Center, Greenville Zoo, Greenville Chautauqua, Greg Beckner and

Tiffany Hart for contributing photos to this issue.

He’s wild about animals. But when strolling through the Greenville Zoo, Director Jeff Bullock admits it’s people he most wants to see.

“I come out here and people-watch,” he says, noting a typical crowd includes families with young children, of course, but also teens, tweens, couples and senior adults. “We offer a variety of events that encourage visitors of all ages to come the Zoo. This is a place where everyone can just enjoy being outside together – I like to see people interacting with each other and connecting with the animals.”

Nestled on 14 beautifully landscaped acres in the midst of Cleveland Park, the Greenville Zoo has been rated one of the best tourist attractions in South Carolina. Some 270,000 visitors come through the gates each year to enjoy up-close views of wildlife from all over the world including giraffes, monkeys, giant tortoises and elephants as well as an amazing assortment of reptiles.

“We work to attract many different demographics,” Bullock says. With its delightful array of animal exhibits, the Zoo – which takes approximately 1-1½ hours to tour – is an easy excursion for families. A stroll through the Zoo makes for a fun date, too, and the facility’s shaded walkways are a popular venue

for seniors taking their daily exercise. An emphasis on education ensures this is a favorite field trip for daycares and school groups while festive party packages bring out the 3-11 birthday crowd.

Bullock notes that while every season brings engaging programs, summer always promises a roaring good time.

“Summer is all about Zoo Camp for the kids,” he says, “but we also host events like Brew in the Zoo (a recent after-hours social for the over-21 crowd) to bring singles and young professionals out to the Zoo, too. … We want to make every visit here as memorable as we can.”

Festive events on tap this summer include:

Ice Cream Social: Friday, June 21, 10AM-2PMA chance to cool off on the first day of summer.

Entertainment for kids, face painting and an Ice Cream Dance Party along with ice cream, Kona Ice and other frozen treats for sale. Cost is regular Zoo admission.

Hot Dog Day: Saturday, July 13One of the Zoo’s most popular annual events. Hot dogs,

chips, ice cream and Pepsi for 50 cents each. Zoo Admission for Hot Dog Day is $7.75 for adults, $1.25 for children.

Zoo-B-Que: Friday, Aug. 2, 6-9PMGreenville’s mane event for Zoo-goers ages 21 & up. An

after-hours fundraiser, to benefit renovations to the Lion’s Den, featuring live music and free samples of local barbeque and beer. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for designated drivers.

Zoo-A-Palooza: Saturday, Aug. 24B93.7 takes over the Greenville Zoo and hosts a party with

plenty of food, vendors, free BEE prizes and more. Additional details TBD.

Sippin’ Safari: Friday, Sept. 6An annual fund-raiser, to benefit the Zoo’s education

programs, featuring beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Tickets available at area Bi-Lo stores in August.

Accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, the Greenville Zoo is open all summer long, seven days a week, from 9AM-5PM. For details, call 864.467.4300 or visit www.greenvillezoo.com.

W i l d A b o u t S u m m e rZoo Camp bigger, bolder than ever

A working mom’s trickiest “project,” according to Michelle Usher, is designing a summer childcare schedule that’s enriching, entertaining and, of course, a ordable.

“Zoo Camp is always the rst thing I schedule,” says Usher, who is VP/Marketing at Addison Homes. “My kids have been going since they were 3. ey love it, and it’s the highlight of their summer.”

e three Usher children – now 7, 11 and 13 – attend camp sessions with the same set of friends every year, making it a much-anticipated summer tradition. “ ey like it because it’s fun,” their mom says, “and I like it because they’re learning.”

Indeed, Zoo Camp combines education with entertainment, o ering a unique hands-on experience that connects children with the animals.

From KinderCamp when they were tiny to a Roars & Snores sleepover for her now-teen, Zoo Camp provides a break from routine childcare, Usher says, and this year’s multiple camp themes and extended hours make it a more accessible option for working parents.

e Zoo Camp schedule is bigger and bolder than before. While camps past featured one

overall theme for the entire summer, 2013 provides two or three di erent topics for each age group so kids can attend more than one session – perhaps combining a morning and afternoon camp to make it an all-day a air or attending multiple half-day programs over several weeks. Earlier drop-o times and an extended “Stay & Play” option for some sessions give working parents a little longer on the job.

“We heard this request (for extended hours),” explains Education Curator Leanne White, “so we’re trying it out. We want to make Zoo Camp an attractive option for everyone.”

Upwards of 700 kids, ages 3-14, come out to Zoo Camp every year, and while some sessions are already full, registration remains underway.

“Selection is now somewhat limited,” White says, “but we do still have spots available.”Kids who age-out of Zoo Camp—but still want to participate—can become camp

volunteers. ey assist with crafts, games and animals to help young campers explore the animal world.

“ is is a fun, hands-on opportunity for teens,” White says, and a training session is required. “It gives them a behind-the-scenes look at how a modern zoo works. Many of our campers return to volunteer – and we’ve had volunteers come back as interns and camp instructors.”

For Zoo Camp schedule and details, call 864.467.4850 or visit www.greenvillezoo.com/ZooCamp.

Nobody loves books more than a high school English teacher. But when it comes to history, well, Larry Bounds says it’s simply more powerful presented off the page.

“Chautauqua is ‘history that just won’t stay in a book,’” says Bounds, a well-loved English instructor at Wade Hampton High School who sidelines as an historical interpreter. This veteran scholar-performer has appeared as Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Harry Houdini, Ambrose Bierce and General Wade Hampton III, and he premiers his Davy Crockett later this month at Greenville’s 2013 Chautauqua Festival. “People sometimes think of history as dry or dull. We’re here to make it fun.”

Indeed, Greenville Chautauqua brings history to life through energetic, interactive theater featuring nationally-acclaimed actors portraying characters from our collective past. Along with Davy Crockett, this year’s theme, “American Legends,” brings Susan B. Anthony, Herman Melville and Malcolm X to town.

These dynamic figures hit the stage to spin their own tales while challenging our assumptions, our facts and our understandings – and then they open it up for the audience to ask questions. Compelling discussions often ensue and, ideally, stimulate critical thinking.

“I spend at least a year preparing for each role,” Bounds explains, detailing a rigorous protocol of study that yields a profound breadth and depth of knowledge enabling him to answer on-the-spot queries about everything from the character’s public persona to his personal philosophy, beliefs, preferences, even mundane grooming details.

“You just never know, from evening to evening, what the audience is going to ask,” he says. “So I need to learn more than just (a character’s) biography. I want to think his thoughts, speak with his words, truly understand his ideas. I have to know if he had a pet, and whether or not he wore socks.”

The goal, Bounds says, “is to be as true as possible when bringing historical figures to life on the stage.”

Greenville Chautauqua was founded in 1999 with a mission to celebrate the diversity of our culture through a variety of voices from the past. History belongs to everyone, according to Festival Administrator Caroline McIntyre, and that’s why Chautauqua performances are free and open to the public.

“We do a lot of fund-raising to make sure our events are accessible to the entire community,” McIntyre says, and thanks to strong financial support the Festival is able to bring in the country’s most acclaimed scholar-performers. “Our historical interpreters look like the characters, talk like the characters and know every intimate detail of their life – plus, they are

wonderful entertainers!” Greenville’s 10-day, two-

weekend festival—slated June 14–23—comprises 22 free shows and other events designed to engage the entire family. There’s a different outdoor performance each Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening at 7:30PM, either at Falls Park or under the Chautauqua Tent at Greenville Tech. Indoor shows are offered Monday through Friday at 11:30AM and Saturdays at 2PM at various local venues; and morning discussions take place June 15, 17, 18, 21 and 22 at 9AM at The Phoenix Inn. Special

events include a Celebrity Luncheon fundraiser (tickets required) on Sunday, June 16, from 12:30-2:30PM and “Legends of Camelot” on Friday, June 21, at 7:30PM. Chautauqua characters also make appearances in Spartanburg and Asheville.

Mark Twain once said, “Buy land, they’re not making it anymore.” What a great observation to tie to Land Trust Day. He’s right! They aren’t making it anymore, and that’s why it’s important to work extra hard to save family farms, open fields, watersheds, swamps, bogs, rivers, and other habitat areas. At the end of the day, Mast Store will donate 20% of the day’s sales to Up State Forever to help sup-port their work.
