First look out notice againstVijay Mallya neededcorrection, says CBINEW DELHI: The CBI said on Tuesday that the firstlook out circular against embattled businessmanVijay Mallya for his detention at airpor t was notsustainable in law and needed correction as therewas no warrant against him at that time. The agency reiterated its position that there wereno grounds to arrest Mallya on November 24, 2015when he returned from London on the basis of the look outcircular (LOC) issued on October 16, 2015 calling for hisdetention, agency sources said. The first circular needed modification as Mallya had beencooperating with the agency, the evidence were still beingcollected, he was a sitting MP and there was no warrantagainst him, the sources said. Realising the need for correc-tion in the notice, the agency wrote to immigration authori-ties to change it from seeking Mallya’s detention to inform-ing the CBI whenever he was travelling abroad. The cor-rected look out circular was issued on November 24, 2015and even after the issuance of the notice, Mallya continued toprovide documents and answer questions of the investigat-ing team, they said. Navjot Sidhu huggingPakistan Army chiefimpacts soldiers, saysNirmala SitharamanNEW DELHI: Defence minister Nirmala Sitharamansaid on Tuesday that Navjot Singh Sidhu’s gestureof hugging Pakistan’s army chief impacted soldiersback home and asser ted that the Punjab ministercould have “avoided it”.Cricketer-turned politician Sidhu had cour ted con-troversy by hugging Pakistan Army chief QamarJaved Bajwa during his visit to Pakistan for theswearing-in of Imran Khan as Prime Minister. He had claimed that he did so as Bajwa told himthat the Pakistan government was working for open-ing of the Kar tarpur corridor for Sikh pilgrims fromIndian state of Punjab.“Sidhu has a lot of admirers...somebody of that stat-ure going there and then hugging the chief of thearmy, an army about which in India we have very clearfeelings, it cer tainly has an impact on soldiers..., itdemoralises the people. I wish Sidhu would have avoided it(hug),” she said during an interaction at the IndianWomen’s Press Corp (IWPC).

TWO YEARS AFTER SACKING HIM OVER BRIBERYCHARGES, AAP WANTS CHOTTEPUR BACK

Kejriwal should apologise to Chhotepur for humiliating him: Khaira, SandhuCONTD. FROM PAGE 1Reacting to the meeting of the Delhi loyalist leaders with Chhotepur Sunday night urging him to return to the par ty fold, Bholath MLASukhpal Singh Khaira and Kharar MLA Kanwar Sandhu told mediapersons that they were happy that the central leadership of the party hadbeen forced to reach out to the leaders in Punjab. “However, this is not enough. There was a concentrated effor t against Chhotepurby cer tain leaders from Delhi who are also responsible for the poor showing of the par ty in the assembly elections. ArvindKejriwal must apologise to him and these leaders must be thrown out of the party. It is strange that these very leaders who causea rif t within the par ty are today reaching out to people like Dr Dharamvir Gandhi,” said Sandhu in an oblique reference to SanjaySingh, former state in-charge.Sukhpal Khaira said he was happy to see that due to the voice of autonomy raised by a group of MLAs and par ty workers inPunjab, the central leadership had now been forced to reach out to those very people whom they had sidelined and thrown out ofthe par ty. “These people had finished the political career of Sucha Singh Chhotepur. Now, I am glad to see that these three or fourleaders are going from house to house to placate him and Dr Gandhi. However, I am sure that Chhotepur will not be mollified soeasily because these people had vir tually tossed his turban by accusing him of bribery,” said Khaira.Khaira and Sandhu said while the dissident MLAs were open to holding talks with the leaders of the other faction yet this couldnot take place without the central demand of autonomy for the par ty. “There is no going back on the resolutions passed during theBathinda convention. Let these three or four leaders who are holding the so-called mediation talks we will show them the mir ror.We are not afraid of sitting and talking with anyone,” said Khaira.All-par ty meet called on September 21The dissident MLAs have called an all par ty meeting in Chandigarh on September 21 in which the issue of the implementation ofthe Justice Ranjit Singh Commission repor t will be discussed. Stating this here today, Sukhpal Khaira said that all par ties, including Congress, will be invited for the meeting. “We will especially invite the Congress Ministers Navjot Singh Sidhu, TriptRajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, because of the vociferous manner in which they had raised the issue ofaction against former CM Parkash Singh Badal and former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in the assembly,” he said. Khaira said thatit was very clear that was very clear that the Congress and the Akalis were hand in glove in letting the guilty go scot-free in thedesecration and police firing incidents and therefore it was impor tant for other par ties to come together and discuss a wayforward. He said that more than 50 political representatives had already been contacted to par ticipate in the meeting.

CONTD. FROM PAGE 1Speaking to The Indian Express, Sucha Singh Chottepur said that thiswas the first time that anyone from AAP had met him after he wasremoved in August 2016. “As far as I am concerned, I have told themthat I have not forgotten what the par ty did to me two years back. AndI minced no words in what I said. They were my guests so I had to berespectful towards them. However, I told them to convey my words tothe Delhi leaders including Arvind Kejriwal,” he said. When asked if the AAP leadership was not again veering towards theleaders it had once thrown out because of the approaching generalelections and the weak wicket that the par ty was on because of inter-nal rift, Chottepur said that the people of the state were very wise andcan see who is doing what with what reason. “It is the people who putyou on a pedestal and they bring you down too. As far as I am con-cerned I will hold discussions with my own party people and anydecision will be taken after consulting them,” he said.Chottepur had been sacked by the AAP after a sting operation sur-faced in which he was allegedly seen taking money from a par tyworker. He had contested the allegation and had said that this was aninternal plot by cer tain leaders to oust him. Chottepur had later floatedApna Punjab Par ty after his removal from AAP. His par ty candidatescontested on all seats in the 2017 Assembly polls in the state but didnot make any impact. Chottepur said that the no one, apart from KanwarSandhu, had been in touch with him from the dissident MLAs camp. “I

have high regard for Sandhu because he spoke up for me when I wasbeing hounded in AAP. And our culture dictates that whoever has stoodby you in hour of need, you must stand by him too,” he said.Speaking to The Indian Express, Sukhpal Khaira said this is not theway to reach out to those people who were thrown out of the par ty andhumiliated. “You have to make corrections to your ideology. People ofPunjab will not be run in autocratic manner. Once you decide that thepar ty will be run by people of Punjab, everything will settle down,” hesaid. He added that as far as he and other MLAs with him are con-cerned, the Delhi leadership has not approached them till now and allsuch repor ts are contrary to the truth.Reacting to the development, Kharar MLA Kanwar Sandhu said thatapproaching individual leaders will not help. “We believe that thebasic issue needs to be addressed. People can get together, but tillyou have autonomy for the state unit and the right organisational struc-ture nothing will help. They are on the wrong path,” he said.Patiala MP Dr Dharamvir Gandhi, who is also suspended from AAPfor the past three years, said that the AAP leadership knows what itdid to Chottepur and was now trying to make amends ahead of the2019 polls. “As far as I am concerned, my position is entirely differentthan that of Khaira or Chottepur. My demand is not for autonomy toPunjab unit of AAP. My demand is for autonomy to Punjab within India. If Kejriwal can adopt this demand and think on a larger canvas, I canhave truck with anyone,” he said.

UP should be divided into four states: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay SinghLUCKNOW: Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Par ty (AAP), Sanjay Singh on Tuesday in Lucknowdemanded that Uttar Pradesh (UP) be divided into four states for quick development, better law and order situation and easier administration of the state whichis as big as the country Uganda. Singh while addressing the media in the state capital said that AAP will launch a movement for this demand which is in tandemwith Rashtriya Lok Dal's (RLD) Ajit Singh's demand for 'Harit Pradesh.' Praising BSP supremo Mayawati's attempts to get the same done in 2011, Singh alsoreferred to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar's theory of dividing UP into three states that he had proposed in his book--Thoughts onLinguistic States--first published in 1955. Singh said, "UP is a big state and going by its population of over 20 crore people, itis the fif th biggest state in the world. To develop such a big state brings administrative chaos where on the ground levelschools, water, roads and hospitals are inaccessible.

Patrick will freeze proper ty taxes as his first order of business;" More Jobs - implementing an aggressive economic development program from the Mayor's office to makeBrampton the place to be for organizations looking to invest in new business ventures or to relocate their existing ones- not close like the Dixie Cup plant;" Better Healthcare - It's time to get Brampton the state-of-the-art healthcare facilities it needs, and deserves.Communities all around Brampton are getting new state-of-the-ar t hospitals, while ours are the most underfundedand overcrowded in Canada;" Affordable Housing - creating a city that encourages housing construction across all sectors and all levelsof affordability; and" Multi-dimensional spor ts stadium - As Mayor Patrick Brown will lead the effor t to build a world classcricket/multi-dimensional spor ts stadium right here in Brampton. One of the most remarked upon moments from the event came from Regional Councillor ElaineMoore, who spoke of the current Mayor's dysfunctional relationships with both Council and thePolice Chief.Said Councillor Moore: "I cannot express in strong enough terms the impor tance of Brampton votersputting their full suppor t and confidence behind Patrick Brown for Mayor. Brampton Council has 10elected Councillors . Upwards of 7 of the current councillors are NOT suppor ting the current Mayor. I'm goingto say that again - upwards of 7 out of 10 current councillors are not supporting the current mayor. This sendsa clear message about her failed leadership. It is obvious to at least 7 members of council that eithershe doesn't have the capacity to be a team player, or she is a 'my way or the highway' kind of person."

Protests, violence erupt at WorldHindu Congress in ChicagoCHICAGO: A small group of people raising anti-RSS and anti-VHP slogansinside the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center sought to disrupt the2nd World Hindu Congress in Chicago last week but the organizerssaid it caused “nothing more” than a momentary interruption of theproceedings. Inside, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief MohanBhagwat, who was among speakers headlining the Sept.7-9 Con-gress that drew more than 2,000 Hindus from 60 countries, includ-ing from Pakistan and the Caribbean, called for Hindu unity. Healso stressed the need for all Hindus to work unitedly and withcourage and conviction. Although there were other speakers, in-cluding India’s Vice President Venkaiah Naidu at the Congress thatwas publicized also as a commemoration of Swami Vivekananda’sspeech at the Parliament of World Religions 125 years ago, alleyes seemed to be rivetted on Bhagwat. Bhagwat addressed theCongress in English on September 7, elaborating on the themedrawn from the Mahabharat, “Think collectively, Act Valiantly.” Afew hours later in the afternoon after his morning speech, protests eruptedinside the conference room when about half a dozen young people, most ofthem identified as women belonging to Chicago South Asians For Justice, allegedly intruded the venue and raised slogans such as “RSS turn around,we don’t want you in town” and “Stop Hindu fascism” before they werestopped and ejected.

Indira Gandhi made two serious mistakes -Emergency, Operation Blue Star: Natwar Singh

Ever since she was a kid, Hima Das woke up every morningbefore the crack of dawn and would go to the local grazingground in a remote Assam village. With no proper gear or even

a playground, she practiced running at this grazing ground, around 50metres from her house, before the villagers let their cattle loose postsunrise.Daughter of rice farmers, the same teenager left the world awestruckwhen she ran at a track and field stadium in Finland during the 400metre final at the U-20 World Championships, becoming the first In-dian sprinter to win a gold medal at an international track event. The 18-year-old from Kandhulimari village in Dhing -- a small townsituated approximately 20 km from Nagaon -- followed that with a goldin the women's 4x400 metres and silver medals in the women's 400metres and mixed 4x400 metres events at the recently-concludedAsian Games at Jakar ta, Indonesia. There are numerous such stories of Indian athletes who came frompoor, underprivileged families but who showed true grit and foughtextreme odds to make their families and the nation proud.Swapna Barman, daughter of a van-rickshaw puller and tea-estateworker from Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, overcame extreme pover ty tobecome the first Indian woman to achieve a top podium finish in thegruelling heptathlon event at the Asian Games. The Indian Army rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal did all sor ts of odd jobsfrom digging wells to selling onions to working at a petrol pump in hisarduous journey to the gold in men's quadruple sculls event at theAsiad.Harish Kumar, who was a par t of Indian sepak takraw team that wonbronze at the Asian Games, used to sell tea at his father's shop inDelhi to suppor t his family. These are not isolated instances. According to one of India's mostcelebrated athletes Anju Bobby George, this is more a norm than anaberration. Perhaps because due to their tough lifestyle and the ab-sence of too many options in life, "they have insatiable hunger tosucceed", George told IANS.

"Children from rural areas or poor backgrounds engage in physicalactivities as par t of their normal daily routine. After returning fromschool, they either work in the fields or play spor ts. So naturally mostof our spor ts stars come from rural areas," he said.Recalling Hima's childhood, her mother Jonali recalled she was al-ways competitive and hated losing and related how she practicedrunning at a local grazing ground every morning before dawn as thevillagers came there with their herds of cattle after sunrise.Swapna Barman, from Jalpaiguri town in nor thern Bengal, was bornwith six toes. She never found a shoe that fit her per fectly and pain waspar t of her life ever since she star ted walking. But enduring that con-stant pain, she won gold at heptathlon at the Asian Games. Theheptathlon is a grilling seven-event contest which covers a range oftrack and field events and is spread over two days.Swapna's father Panchanan Barman has been bedridden for the lastfew years. "It was not easy for her. We could not meet her expectationsall the time but she would never complain," Swapna's mother Basonatold IANS in an emotion-choked voice. The extra width of her feet makes landing painful and shoes wear outquickly. She found it difficult to meet the expenses of her equipment, said her childhood coach Sukanta Sinha."I was her coach from 2006-2013. She comes from a very poor familyand could barely meet the expenses of training. I saw a spark in herwhen she was in the four th standard. I star ted training her," said Sukantawho could not get past the state level himself, his best being a thirdplace finish in triple jump in a inter district meet in Bengal in the 1980s."She was extremely stubborn and that worked in her favour. We atRaikot Para Spor ting Association club suppor ted her with all the equip-ment and shoes. Today I cannot express in words how happy I am," headded. In Maharashtra, Dattu Baban Bhokanal endured unimaginable suffer-ing and hardships before achieving the pinnacle of spor ting success. The Indian army rower won gold in the Men's Quadruple sculls eventat the Asiad. The 27-year-old, who had claimed a silver medal in themen's single sculls at the Asian Rowing Championships in 2015, iscurrently one of the top rowers in the continent.

But his upbringing and early struggles is typical of millions ofspor tspersons in the country. From digging wells to selling onions toworking in a petrol pump to representing India at the Rio Olympicswhile his mother was in a coma, Dattu has overcome every obstaclein life."We could not even afford two meals a day and it was then that Idecided to star t working with my father, who used to dig wells," Dattutold IANS.After the death of his father, Dattu joined the Indian Army, a decisionwhich was driven more by the need to feed his family than serving thenation."In 2013, I was selected for the Army Rowing Node (ARN) in Pune forbetter training. After six months of practice, I struck two gold medalsat the national championships and that was a confidence-booster," hesaid.Boxer Amit Panghal, another rising star, hails from the msall Maynavillage in Rohtak district of Haryana. His father Chaudhary BijenderSingh Panghal owns just an acre in his village and the family struggledto make ends meet."My elder brother was a boxer as well. He introduced me to boxing. But my family did not have the resources to suppor t both our careers. So my brother decided to sacrifice his dreams for me and joined thearmy," Amit said."He told me before going to the army that he will take care of thefamily and my training expenses and asked me to focus on my boxingcareer. His words lef t a deep impression on me and I have beenstriving to live up to his expectations ever since," he added. The 22-year-old star ted training in 2007 at the Sir Chhotu Ram BoxingAcademy in Rohtak. Trained by coach Arjun Dhankar, Amit enoyed anexplosive star t to his career at the national and international levels. The light flyweight (49 kg) boxer won the gold medal in his debutappearance at the national championships in 2017 and took bronze atAsian Amateur Boxing Championships in Tashkent in May last year.He took silver at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year beforedefeating reigning Olympic and Asian champion Hasanboy Dusmatovin the Asian Games final.

Indira Gandhi made two "serious mistakes - declaring the Emergency in 1975 and allowing Operation Blue Star to happen", butregardless of these she was a great and power ful prime minister

and a considerate humanist, feels veteran Congressman K NatwarSingh.Singh worked in her office from 1966 to 1971 as a civil servicesofficer before joining the Congress in the 80s and becoming a ministerin the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet."Ever so often, Indira Gandhi is depicted as solemn, severe, pricklyand ruthless. Seldom is it mentioned that this beautiful, caring, charming, graceful and sparkling human being was a consideratehumanist and a voracious reader, that she was endowed withcharm, elegance, style, good taste and, above all, gravitas," hesays about the former prime minister.Singh says Gandhi "made two serious mistakes - declaring theEmergency in 1975 and allowing Operation Blue Star to happen",but hastens to add, "And yet, regardless of these, she was a greatand power ful prime minister."Singh expresses these views in his new book, 'Treasured Epistles',a collection of letters. Those who regularly wrote to him includedfriends, contemporaries and colleagues, from the days of his for-eign service to ambassadorship, to recent days as the minister offoreign affairs. Some of whose letters feature in the book include Indira Gandhi,E M Forster, C Rajagopalachari, Lord Mountbatten, JawaharlalNehru's two sisters Vijaylakshmi Pandit and Krishna Hutheesing,

R K Narayan, Nirad C Chaudhuri, Mulk Raj Anand and Han Suyin. He says each of these luminaries influenced him in a differentway and consequently his "Weltanschauung" or world view wasvastly extended and enriched. The topics of Indira Gandhi's letters to Singh ranged from con-gratulating him for becoming a father to politics, books, bir thdaywishes and get-well-soon messages. After sweeping the Lok Sabha elections in 1980, Gandhi wrote toSingh, who was then the high commissioner of India to Islamabad:"The real difficulties now begin. The people's expectations arehigh but the situation - both political or economic, is an extremelycomplex one.""I cannot help being an optimist and I have no doubt that if onlyour legislators and the people as a whole have the patience andforbearance to climb the steep and stony path for the next fewmonths, we can get over the hump and arrive at a place fromwhich progress is possible once again."Among the several other nuggets in the book, published by Rupa,is Rajagopalachari once telling Singh that he had "sold" the ideaof Par tition to Lord Mountbatten as "Par tition was the only an-swer".When Singh persisted by saying that Mahatma Gandhi was againstthe Par t i t ion, Rajagopalachari said, "Gandhi was a very greatman but he saw what was going on. He was a very disillusionedman. When he realised that we were all for Par tition, he said, 'If youall agree, I will go along with you,' and lef t Delhi the next day."

Swapna Barman, from Jalpaiguri town in nor thern Bengal, was born with six toes. She never found ashoe that fit her perfectly and pain was part of her life ever since she started walking. But enduring thatconstant pain, she won gold at heptathlon at the Asian Games. The heptathlon is a grilling seven-eventcontest which covers a range of track and field events and is spread over two days.‘

FREELAND TO RETURN TO WASHINGTON THIS WEEK

TO CONTINUE NAFTA TALKS

‘Trudeau says he thought a dealwas close in Spring but turned outnot to be the case.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford With His PC Caucus after the International Plowing Match in Rural Ontario.

OTTAWA: Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says she's return-ing to Washington this week to continue negotiations with her counter-part, United States Trade Representative Rober t Lighthizer, in an effort toconclude negotiations to revamp the North American F ree Trade Agree-ment. "I've been in touch today with Ambassador Lighthizer and his teamand we agreed that we would continue to talk in Washington later thisweek — the specifics of our calendar we haven't quite worked out — butwe will be meeting in Washington later this week," Freeland told report-ers in Ottawa Monday. Freeland said her negotiators were in the U.S.capital Thursday and Friday continuing their work at a technical level;they are now back in Washington, where they will continue to negotiatethroughout the week. Freeland said Canada is in a continuous state ofnegotiation with U.S. officials and that it was "absolutely the right thing forus to meet this week." The negotiations are still looking for a break-through on contentious issues, such as protection for Canada's culturalindustries and the retention of a dispute resolution mechanism used tochallenge punitive anti-dumping and countervailing duty measures.Canada has used the mechanism in the past to challenge Americanduties on softwood lumber. Lighthizer has long opposed this chapter ofNAFTA as a violation of U.S. sovereignty. The U.S. also is trying to extractsome concessions from Canada on the dairy front, demanding more

access to a market that is largely protected from impor ts by supplymanagement. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said repeatedly that hewill not dismantle the country's farm policies. Speaking to Paul Wells ofMaclean's magazine later Monday, Tr udeau said that his governmentwas continuing to push for a good deal and would not be pushed into signing abad deal. "Every time we get momentum, every time we work together, we doknock off a few more things and move closer to an eventual decision point. We'renot there yet," Trudeau said. "There were points in the spring where we thought wewere perhaps days or weeks away. Turned out not to be the case. We might bedays or weeks away now. It might not be." News of Freeland's resump-tion of talks in Washington came as MPs returned to the House of Com-mons and opposition par ties took shots at the Liberals over their man-agement of the economy and the ongoing NAFTA negotiations.

AS LEGALIZATION LOOMS,CANADA'S POT COMPANIESABOUT TO BE TESTED

OTTAWA: For years now, Canada's cannabis compa-nies have grown in size, soared in value and existed ina sor t of ethereal middle ground waiting for that distantfuture when pot was legal. Now as legalization looms, one of the country's biggest licensed producers is brac-ing for life on the other side of that legal divide — wherepromise and reality will finally meet."There will be failures. There will be shor tcomings. There will be shor t shipments," said Vic Neufeld, CEOof Aphria, one of the largest and highest-valued can-nabis companies in the world. Founded in 2014, Aphriahas expanded and grown at breakneck speeds, makinginvestors rich in the process. And now, like every other cannabis producer in Canada,it's about to face its biggest test when recreationalmarijuana becomes legal on Oct . 17, launchingwhat's expected to be a major industry. Accordingto recent data from Statistics Canada, even withoutlegalization, Canadians spend about $5.7 billion onmarijuana annually. REWARI: After the shunting out of Rewari superintendent of police(SP) Rajesh Duggal, a woman assistant sub-inspector has been sus-pended over alleged delay in taking action in the gangrape case of a19-year-old woman. “The orders to suspend ASI Hiramani of thewomen’s police station, Rewari were issued on Monday. She hasbeen placed under suspension over allegations of delay in takingaction on the complaint and negligence,” a Rewari district police offi-cial said on Tuesday. Earlier, Duggal was moved out as the Rewari SPand Rahul Sharma was made the new district police chief. The victim’s family has alleged that the police failed to take promptaction on their complaint and delayed action by citing jurisdictionalissues between their units in Rewari and Mahendragarh districts. The family has alleged that the women’s police station in Rewari, after registering a “zero FIR” in the case, delayed action and failed topromptly hand over the probe to the Mahendragarh police, under whosejurisdiction the incident took place. A zero FIR can be filed at anypolice station and can later be transferred to the police station con-cerned. The case has prompted the opposition par ties to demandHaryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s resignation on moralgrounds, saying the state had failed to protect its daughters. The Congress on Monday demanded imposition of President’s Rule inthe state, alleging that the BJP-led government had utterly failed totackle the law-and-order situation. Meanwhile, residents of the vil-lage where the woman was allegedly gangraped, claimed that the thespot where the crime took place was infamous for nefarious activi-

ties. They alleged that there were incidents of girls being harassed byvagabonds at the spot in the past as well. “We demand an exemplarypunishment for the accused. However, our plea is that no innocentyouth of the village should be harassed by the police as many have been calledfor questioning,” one of the villagers said. Meanwhile, teams of Haryana policecontinued with their raids on Tuesday to nab the two prime accused in the case --armyman Pankaj and Manish. The Haryana police has so far arrested three menin the case, including Nishu, who, according to the police, is one of the three mainaccused. 2019 LOK SABHA POLLS: ASHOK GEHLOT

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Monday saidthe popularity graph of the Narendra Modi government has fallen andit will not be a surprise if the BJP faces a drubbing in the 2019 LokSabha elections. He was speaking at a press conference at his resi-dence in Jaipur. "Only two faces are ruling the country those ofNarendra Modi and Amit Shah. But it will not be a surprise if they aretrounced (in the 2019 general) elections," the former Rajasthan chiefminister said. He said the Bharatiya Janata Par ty (BJP) also knowswell that it will lose the upcoming Assembly elections in Rajasthan, which is why par ty president Amit Shah is using Modi's name and notchief minister Vasundhara Raje's to seek votes."They (BJP) have understood that seeking votes in the name ofVasundhara Raje will only lead to defeat. Therefore they are seeking

votes in the name of Modi. But that time has passed, the (popularity)graph (of the Modi government) has rapidly come down," Gehlot said."What Amit Shah and Vasundhara Raje are saying is a bundle of liesand people know it," he added. The Congress leader also demanded answers from the BJP on theRafale fighter jets deal and on the huge rise in the turnover of thecompany of Shah's son."They are not replying (to questions) about the Rafale deal and ratherpushing forward IAF officers (for statements). They should also re-spond on the matter of (assets of company of) Amit Shah's son," hesaid. Speaking about the proposed 'mahagathbandhan' (grand alli-ance) of opposition par ties to stop the juggernaut of the BJP-led Na-tional Democratic Alliance, Gehlot said it was necessary that all ofthem come on one platform.

PROPOSED TIE-UP BETWEEN AIMIM AND PRAKASHAMBEDKAR'S OUTFIT WILL HELP BJP: SHIV SENA

MUMBAI: Terming the proposed pre-poll alliance between the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Prakash Ambedkar-led Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) as "bogus", the Shiv Sena said Monday that such a political move is not a good omen. The alliance would only benefit the BJP, the Sena claimed, alleging that the move by the BBM chief, who is the grandson of late DrB R Ambedkar, is akin to betraying people of his own community. The political alliance of Owaisi and Ambedkar is only forsomeone's defeat and is a well-planned strategy," it said, without naming any par ty. Leaders of the AIMIM and the BBM had saidSaturday that both par ties will forge an alliance for the Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly polls in 2019.Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of the Hyderabad-headquar tered AIMIM, had said that preliminary talks held between the two par tiesyielded positive results. "The proposed political alliance of the AIMIM and Prakash Ambedkar's front of scheduled castes is not agood omen," the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana' Till now, both were carr ying out activities behind thecur tains in support of the BJP, but now they will come out openly to help the saffron par ty, said the Sena, which is an ally of the BJPat the Centre and in Maharashtra. It said instead of openly joining hands with the BJP, they have chosen to set up a new front, which has nothing to do with the line ofthinking of late Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. "Babasaheb fought against the wrong, unjust traditionsof Hindu religion but he never joined hands with radical Muslim groups. He even rejected an offer to conver t to Islam," the Marathipublication said. The AIMIM is a "corrupt version" of the Muslim League, it alleged, adding that it is involved in Muslim vote bankpolitics. "One Owaisi brother had allegedly remarked that 25 crore Muslims could easily overpower Hindus in this country. Thegrandson of late Babasaheb Ambedkar joining hands with such people is like betraying people of his own community," it said."However, any rational Muslim or a scheduled caste youth will not fall for such a bogus alliance," it added. Alleging that Owaisi'slanguage propagates "anarchism", the Sena asked Prakash Ambedkar to clarify if he is comfor table with it. "If someone construesthat BBM's joining hands with Owaisi would lead to instigating the scheduled caste youth and fuel riots in the state, then what answerdoes Prakash Ambedkar have for it?" it sought to know. Most of the scheduled caste community outfits are already affiliated to some mainstream political par ty. The leaders are moreinterested in their self-growth than helping the community, the Sena said. "The schedule castes are already divided into severalfactions, such as Athawale, Kawade, Gavai and Ambedkar. Instead of these factions floating their own front, P rakash Ambedkar isjoining hands with the AIMIM," it said, wondering if such a move will be accepted to the scheduled caste youth.

SUU KYI MUST STOP DEFENDING THE INDEFENSIBLENAYPYIDAW: Myanmar ’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, facing unprecedented criticism for her government’s handling of theRohingya refugee crisis in her nation, has finally conceded that the situation in Rakhine state “could have been better handled”.This, however, will be cold comfor t for the more than 700,000 Rohingya who fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh to escape acrackdown by the Myanmar Army — a campaign so brutal that United Nations rights officials have described it as nothing shor tof ethnic cleansing. A recent repor t by the United Nations Human Rights Council even recommended that Myanmar ’s top generalsbe investigated and prosecuted for “genocide” in Rakhine state. Repor t af ter repor t by rights activists and journalists hasdocumented extrajudicial killings and rapes by Myanmarese troops and the destruction of complete villages in Rakhine, with mostestimates putting the death toll in last year’s bloodshed at 10,000. Ms Suu Kyi rarely speaks at public events about the situation in Rakhine, oraccepts questions from the media about the Rohingya refugees, or even utters the word “Rohingya”. Even in her latest remarks on the issue at aninternational forum in Hanoi, Ms Suu Kyi sought to imply that her civilian government wields “only 75%?of the power” in a power-sharing arrangementwith the military, but it is hard to square her remarks with her reputation as the person who almost single-handedly took onMyanmar’s junta and paved the way for democratic reforms that culminated with the 2015 elections, which was swept by herpar ty. Even more damning was Ms Suu Kyi’s defence of the jailing of two Reuters repor ters — Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo — lastweek for, as she put it, breaking the Official Secrets Act. Most rights groups and journalists’ bodies believe the two repor ters weregiven seven-year jail terms for their role in exposing the massacre of 10 Rohingya men at Inn Din village in Rakhine last year.

BREXIT: UK PM IRRITATED BY CHALLENGERS AS LONDONMAYOR CALLS FOR FRESH REFERENDUMLONDON: Prime minister Theresa May used an interview to mark the six-month countdown to Brexit to convey her irritation atspeculation in herpar ty about her future, while London mayor Sadiq Khan called for another referendum on EU membership.Uncer tainty has mounted as official and other assessments predict adverse impact on daily life in the United Kingdom if Londonand Brussels fail to reach a deal on their future relationship. Any such deal can also be potentially voted down by the UKparliament. The UK is due to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019, after decades of being a frontline member that influencedand contributed significantly to the bloc. The close 2016 vote to leave the EU, however, has divided the country down the middle.Speaking to BBC in a special interview to be telecast on Monday, May criticised her former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, whohas been attacking her Brexit plan outlined in Chequers since resigning in July.

STREE, SANJU, PADMAAVAT, GOLD: THIS YEAR’S 100-CROREFILMS HAVE BROKEN GENRE BARRIERSMUMBAI: Last year it seemed that Bollywood’s obsession with period films had reached its zenith, but this year, filmmakers showcasedan even greater mix of genres. The nine films that have crossed the ?100 crore mark thus far belong to different genres. The latest oneis the horror-comedy Stree, which continues to set the cash registers ringing. Producer Bhushan Kumar, who backed romantic comedySonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and crime action thriller Raid, which was based on a true incident, calls this a clear sign of the fact that “we havematured as storytellers.” He explains, “We’re willing to tackle different kind of subjects. With exposure to international cinema andthemes, [I feel] the audience has also evolved.” He adds, “We have always believed in backing content-driven subjects, and ourupcoming films also promise a variety, which, in the current times, is truly the spice of life for the cinema-loving audience. If this year’ssuccess is anything to go by, it looks like the filmmaking community and the audience are in for a great ride ahead.”

INDIA BEAT HONG KONG BY26 RUNS IN ASIA CUP

Batting first, India had posted 285 runs against the minnows. However, Hong Kong opening pair of Nizakat Khan(92) and skipper Anshuman Rath (73) added a record

174-run par tnership to raise the visions of a major upset beforeinexperience cost them dear as they managed 259 for eight. One of the biggest drawbacks of the 2018 Asia Cup is the factthat teams will be forced to play matches on consecutive days. And these aren't T20 matches that conclude in a few hours. These are full-day, 50-overs-a-side games. And that too in scorchingtemperatures of over 40 degree Celsius. India play Hong Kong on Tuesdayand Pakistan, which is inarguably the match of the tournament, the follow-ing day. Ideally, India would've wanted to bat first against Hong Kong sothat their batters had a chance of playing the full quota of 50overs. But keeping an eye on the fact that Pakistan await thevery next day, India might look to chase against Hong Kong andfinish the game much sooner to get rest.

‘I’m more excited to be in thedriver’s seat’: Imran Khan onhis directorial debut and more

Imran Khan, who was last seen on the big screen in Katti Batti(2015), has now turned director. The suave actor has writtenand helmed Mission Mars: Keep Walking India, which islaunched by Johnnie Walker — The Journey and produced byDharma 2.0. The short film, which releases digitally on Sep-tember 20, revolves around The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM),(also known as Mangalyaan), which was launched by the In-dian Space Research Organisation. Since September 24, 2014,India’s rover successfully began orbiting Mars, marking thecountry’s first venture into interplanetary space. Imran, who is‘a self-confessed space geek’, talks about his transition froman actor to a director, being influenced by Steven Spielberg, andhis future plans. Excerpts...What prompted you to become a director?Everyone had been asking me for the past 10 years whenwould I direct a film, so I thought it was finally time (laughs). What attracted you towards this unconventional subject?I’ve always been fascinated by space exploration. Ever since Iwas a kid, it has fired my imagination. In 2013, I was followingthe Mangalyaan mission closely. Late last year, filmmakerPunit Malhotra asked me if I would be interested in making ashort about it. I jumped at the idea. My friend Abhishek Sahaand I co-wrote the screenplay over a span of four-and-a-halfmonths. This was followed by two months of pre-production. Ithas been exciting because I’m telling the story of somethingthat I find inspirational. This is a huge achievement by Indianscientists which needs to be celebrated. What kind of research went into it?Unfor tunately, we didn’t get direct access to the agencies in-volved. So, I watched interviews, documentaries and scannedarticles. I also read Reaching For The Stars: India’s Journey To TheMars by Pallava Bagla from where I got a lot of structure for the film. How challenging was it to capture everything within a short film? That was the tricky aspect, which took us time to crack. Thank-fully, there was a cinematic structure in the actual event. It took300 days for the spacecraft to travel to Mars. In the mission’sfinal leg, it had to slow down and enter the orbit around the redplanet. That manoeuver had to happen when the craft wasbehind Mars, so there was a 25-minute period where the sci-entists could neither see nor communicate with it. We’ve setthe film in the control room during those 25 minutes when wecan show viewers flashbacks.

‘I’ve never focused on the results’:Shraddha Kapoor on 'Stree' success,Batti Gul Meter Chalu and moreThe spark in Shraddha Kapoor’s eyes is unmistakable. The actress isjustifiably upbeat because she is fresh off the back of her superhitouting Stree and has Batti Gul Meter Chalu (BGMC), which releasesthis Friday. “For every film I do, I focus on giving it my 110 per cent andhope people will go to watch it and be entertained,’’ the light-eyedbeauty says when we catch up with her for a tête-à-tête. She also tellsus about her upcoming films, sweating it out for her turn as SainaNehwal in the national badminton champ’s on-screen memoir, rumours of a link-up with photographer Rohan Shrestha, and more.Excerpts...The success of Stree must have come as a career boost afteryour films last year didn’t fare too well...I’ve never focussed on the results. Hits and misses are not inyour hands. When a movie succeeds, it feels great. At the sametime, I can’t be complacent about it. I have to keep working hardand do the best I can. I find it shocking yet amazing that Stree hasbecome a blockbuster. I had hoped for it to do well, but didn’tknow it would be such a huge hit.Your next release is BGMC. What was your first reaction to thescript? My first reaction was, ‘Wow!’ The content is so special. It’s awell-written story on a prevalent issue about how power compa-nies can affect big as well as smaller towns. This is the first timeI’ve been offered something with a social connect. I had lovedShree Narayan Singh’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which conveyedan important message in an enter taining manner without beingpreachy. How was it working with Shahid Kapoor again after Haider? It was a great experience — especially on something that is sodifferent from our first film together. Haider was an adaptation ofWilliam Shakespeare’s play, while this is a socially-relevantsubject. It was great to explore this genre with Shahid. Havingworked with him in the past, there was a comfor t level thathelped us essay our parts effortlessly.Tell us about your experience of shooting in a small town like Tehriwhere the comforts you’re used to are not available easily. As a matter of fact, I don’t want things to be available easily. I alsoneed a good dose of nature every now and then to keep me calm.Uttarakhand is such a fabulous place that you feel you’re inheaven because there are no crowds, traffic and constant honking.I didn’t want the shoot to end. I just wanted to stay there and discon-nect from everything. After the shoot or on a day off, I would sit inmy balcony and lose myself to nature for hours. Even as a shotwould be readied, I would take off to look around. I felt I needed it.

DISTURBS YOUR SOUL TO PORTRAY AHARD-TO-SWALLOW REALITY!

M O V I E R E V I E W

Love Sonia is a story set somewhere far away from the cry andchaos of metropolitan cities. It’s the story revolving around twosisters Sonia (Mrunal Thakur) and Preeti (Riya Sisodiya). Their

farmer father Shiva (Adil Hussain) is burdened under the monetarypressure of Dada Thakur (Anupam Kher). Shiva, a poor farmer, ishelpless against the nature’s curse and hence decides to do the worstthing a father can do (No, suicide isn’t the worst).Shiva sells Preeti out to Dada Thakur and he then transpor ts her toMumbai in a whorehouse. Sonia loses herself on a quest of findingPreeti in a place full of inhumanity. The brothel is managed by Faizalaka Baabu Bhai (Manoj Bajpayee) and Madhuri (Richa Chadha). Ma-jor of the story is about how Sonia makes every possible effor t, evenif it was against her conscience, to reunite with Preeti.SCRIPT ANALYSISThis is one such film you cannot revisit again! It’s very good in cer-tain depar tments but it wrenches your emotions enough in a singletime. Very disturbing at places but that’s what makes it stand out fromrest of the films made on similar lines. Tabrez Noorani has designedthis compilation of shocking facts in a film. The story is knotty andclassy but the idea behind it is stretched.A very late interval point exhausts your thinking power, and in thesecond half everything just falls at right places very convenientlywhich takes the essence created in the first half. Ritesh Shah’s Hindidialogues are as barbaric as the script which go very well with thestory. Some situations are so well depicted they are too dark to betrue. Special mention for Shahid Aamir who as designed costumesfor the film, they are authentic in every sense. Also, Seema Kashyap’ssets in India are an illusion of the reality.STAR PERFORMANCEMrunal Thakur is a gifted actress and this should go down in the list ofamazing debuts in the history of cinema. It’s said an actor’s test iswhen he/she can cry well and Mrunal along with Riya Sisodiya (Sonia’ssister Preeti in the film) score full marks in this depar tment. Mrunal,

with her performance, was a perfect choice to por tray what Tabrezneeded to say. Though having a limited scope, Riya Sisodiya shineswith her edgy por trayal of Preeti.Manoj Bajpayee as the cold-blooded brothel owner Baabu Bhai makesyou hate him. Loved the way how he has worked with his voice forthis role, a very wicked addition. Richa Chadha as Madhuri adaptsthe very peculiar characteristics of a pimp flawlessly. Freida Pintooverplays her role at places but is a treat to watch because of herphysical kinesics. Rajkummar Rao, in a little role, is very limited. This fling also might be because of the recent explosion of Rao’stalent; everyone wants to see the maximum of him.Anupam Kher as Dada Thakur leaves the desired impact and sup-por ts the disturbance building up in the first half. Sai Tamhankar –why you not doing Bollywood films on a regular basis? She hasmarvellously adapted all the mannerisms; from walk to talk. AdilHussain does a fine job too; as a helpless farmer and father he ex-presses well.DIRECTION, MUSICTabrez Noorani makes his debut as a director with Love Sonia andmakes you wonder why he took this decision so late. His direction istop-notch which gleams this infernal story. One of the best thingsabout the film is the metaphorical end in which Sonia writes out toevery girl in this world who is suffering from the trafficking.Nies Bye Nielsen’s background music is ‘just there’ throughout andthere is nothing path breaking. One feels it might be a consciousdecision to not go all out with the music given the rawness the mak-ers needed with the scenes. A.R. Rahman ends the movie on a highnote with his song I Am More per formed by Bishop Briggs.THE LAST WORDAll said and done, Love Sonia is a special film backed by someexceptional names. It falls shor t at places but is very informative andit portrays a hard-to-swallow reality in a very genuine way. Watch itonly if you have the appetite to digest such dramas.

Thugs of Hindostan logoand release date out,Amitabh Bachchan trumpsAamir Khan for top-billing

Yash Raj Films has officially kicked off promotionsfor what is shaping up to be the studio’s most ambi-tious film ever, Thugs of Hindostan. On Monday, theyofficially released the logo for the film and announcedthe release date. Starring Aamir Khan, AmitabhBachchan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Katrina Kaif,Thugs of Hindostan has officially been slated for aNovember 8 release.Star ting this week, YRF will release motion picturesfor characters, which will lead up to a teaser. Withless than two months to go till its release, they’recutting is closer than usual, considering not even asingle image from the film has been released so far.Touted as India’s answer to Pirates of the Carib-bean, the animated logo has similar iconography, with swords and emblems merging into each otherto reveal the steely title: Thugs of Hindostan.Curiously, though, it is not Aamir who has receivedtop billing but Amitabh. Aamir, who has deliveredsome of Hindi cinema’s biggest hits in Dangal, 3Idiots and PK, said that he was starstruck workingopposite Amitabh.Thugs of Hindostan has been budgeted at approxi-mately Rs 300 crore. “Thugs of Hindostan is a bigaction-adventure film. There’s no message in that. Iam playing a character who cannot be trusted at all– [so it’s the] very opposite of Dangal … He’s avery slippery character. He has no scruples at all –for money he can sell his mother out. He’s like that,”Aamir earlier told South China Morning Post aboutthe film.Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who also directedAamir in Dhoom 3, the film has been shot aboardships, too. Said an insider, “Since sea and shipsplay an integral par t in the plot, Aamir as well as(producer) Aditya Chopra were sure that they wouldgo all out to present the biggest spectacle that Hindicinema has ever witnessed. The film’s budgets areyet to be ascertained, but the cost for the two shipseasily runs into several crores.”That’s how two mammoth ships — weighing twolakh kilos — were built by over 1,000 people, in-cluding international designers and ship makers. “Ittook over a year to build these two ships off thecoast of Malta (in Europe). Director Vijay KrishnaAcharya wanted to go the whole hog in terms of scaleand create a huge visual experience. Authenticityand aesthetics have both been kept in mind giventhe fact that it’s a period film.”

Shahid Kapoor: My character in Batti Gul Meter Chalu isdiametrically opposite to what I played in Padmaavat

He may have proved his mettle as a performer with films such asKaminey, Haider and Padmaavat, but Shahid Kapoor says ini-tially it was not easy for him to score versatile characters. The37-year-old actor, who made his Bollywood debut with collegeromance Ishq Vishk, said it was tough for him to break out of the"chocolate boy" image."I have always tried to get good and versatile roles. I wanted toshow my versatility. But nobody used to offer me such scripts. They used to think that I am only suitable for chocolate boy andcollege student roles. There were no other options," Shahid saidin an interview. The actor said it was sheer hard work and perse-verance that helped him in convincing the filmmakers that he hasmuch more to offer than just being a lover boy. "It's been 15 yearssince I have been working in the industry and after much hardwork, now I am being offered diverse roles. It's been a long jour-ney and I have made a lot of effor t. Today, I feel very for tunate thatpeople also think of me as an actor who plays a variety of charac-ters," he said.Shahid's next film, Batti Gul Meter Chalu is another addition to hisdiverse filmography and the actor says his character in the newfeature was unlike others he has played on screen. "It is diametri-

cally opposite to what I played in Padmaavat. Sushil Kumar Pant,my charac ter, has verbal diarrhea. He is completely immoral and has novalues." Directed by Shree Narayan Singh, the film is set in Uttarakhand's TehriGarhwal district and narrates a story of electricity theft in rural areas of India."There are many such issues that people face in those areas andwe have addressed these in the film," Shahid said.

Kajol: '#MeToo can't berestricted to Bollywood, not justone section of the society'Actor Kajol said that while she is strict with her chil-dren, husband Ajay Devgn is the one who spoilsthem. The actor said though they play the 'good cop-bad cop' routine in real life, Ajay has realised theimpor tance of setting their kids - daughter Nysa andson Yug - straight."I'm a Hitler mother... I'm a bad cop, Ajay's a goodcop... But the percentage of the good cop has droppedin him. He has realised that it is necessary to be abad cop sometimes. That he can't always look at themother to say 'no'. I'm 30 per cent bad cop, 70 percent good cop," Kajol said during a session at NDTV'sspecial youth conclave, 'YUVA'.The actor said parenting does not come with amanual and no amount of training can help a person. "It's avery much a hands-on job... You have to do an internship witha child... You have to know that you will make mistakes andthat others will make mistakes. You'll have to forgive themand yourself. It is one of the most rewarding jobs... To see yourchildren growing up to become good human beings."Kajol said TV and films have established an image of idealmother, which many first-timers try to achieve. "An ideal isthere. That a good mother cooks food, does this and doesthat... She sacrifices her life for their kids. If your child thinksyou are a good mother, that's the opinion that matters."The actor said social media has changed everything and onecannot protect their children from its impact. "The least youcan do is encourage them to be who they are, irrespective ofshape, size, colour... That 'you matter, you're loved and you'rebeautiful inside out." Kajol said her children never stopped herto go to work. "Maybe in childhood, they asked 'Why you haveto go away?' But today when my daughter says 'I'm so proudof you', I cannot be more proud of myself for having earned thatrecognition. I hope my kids are not affected by my celebritystatus. I have tried my best to keep them as normalas possible. I believe they have their head on theirshoulders. I think I've done a good job."

Manmarziyaan, which in Hindi translates to ‘do what pleasesyour hear t’, is a complicated, confusing and a beautiful lovetriangle between Vicky (Vicky Kaushal), Rumi (Taapsee

Pannu) and Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan). Now, Vicky ‘believes’ thathe and Rumi are star-crossed lovers but is a very irresponsible per-son. When he’s given a day to come & confess his feelings to Rumi’sparents, he decides to keep it postponing.Enters a successful banker from London, Robbie. He’s the kind of guyyou get in arrange marriages but Rumi is someone you love. Annoyedat Vicky’s carelessness, Rumi warns him that she’ll get married toRobbie if he doesn’t man up. Rest of the story just builds up a curiousityalong with a tad bit of confusion of what will be the fate of this trio.Whatever the result is, it comes with a package of entertainment &thrills.SCRIPT ANALYSISKanika Dhillon is the salient star of the film! Script, screenplay &dialogues – she has mastered each and every depar tment. Yes, shefaces some misses in the midway but by the end everything fallsright into its place. You might think it’s a redux of Bollywood films likeDhadkan, Hum Dil Chuke Sanam & Tanu Weds Manu but there’s avery thick line that sets this apar t from everything – Anurag Kashyap. The dark under tone to the scenes, displaying love in a very realisticway and uproarious dialogues make Manmarziyaan a treat to yourhear t even at the length of 155 minutes. Both the halves of the filmhave been granted equal amount of interesting elements, where thereis madness & crazy fun in the first half, the second one is a bit dark &melodramatic. All depends on your taste but whatever it is you’regoing to enjoy either of the halves better than the other.STAR PERFORMANCETaapsee Pannu deservingly gets a song on what she really is – Bijlee! She’s thunderous in the film & her character of Rumi gets the mostmeat of all. Rumi is very well written and brilliantly por trayed byTaapsee. There’s no stopping for her from here & we’ve a superstar inmaking. Vicky Kaushal – “Kabhi kabhi lagta hai yai’ch acting ka

bhagwan hai.” What star ted from a pure & unadulterated DeepakChaudhary in Masaan has turned into a rumbling roar as Vicky inManmarziyaan. This wasn’t easy even for Vicky Kaushal because his character neededthat touch of madness. For tunately Kaushal has managed to pull Vickyoff with this unmatched talent. Since the posters of Manmarziyaanwere released, I was rooting for Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek’sRobbie is the biggest takeaway for me in the film. His silence, hisbreakdown, his definition of love – everything well por trayed by Jun-ior Bachchan. Saurabh Sachdeva as Kakaji (Marriage Bureau guy)and Vikram Kochhar (Robbie’s brother) though have a very limitedscope but are gifted some hilarious one liners. Ashnoor Kaur (Rumi’scousin) plays her sweet little role with innocence.DIRECTION, MUSICManmarziyaan gifts us one changed Anurag Kashyap! The man whohas given us Gangs Of Wassruy, Ugly, Black Friday, Dev D; it’s veryhard to believe he had it in him to come up with something like this.Bets are high on what he’s doing next because with that RichardLinklater inspired finale, I’m atleast hoping something very differentfrom his next project. He aces his par t with the backing of SylvesterFonseca’s authentic cinematography and Meghna Gandhi’s produc-tion design. You need someone like Amit Trivedi to execute 12 songs into a screen-play in which there’s a lot of things happening around. Daryaa &Hallaa tops for me (Yes, I’m a sadist) and they’re very well placed inthe film. Dhayaan Chand is quirky, Bijlee helps to shape up the Rumi’scharacter and I wish it had more of F For Fyaar. Rest of the songs arestiched to suppor t the screenplay and not extend it. Kashyap has justpulled a (Anurag) Basu with Manmarziyaan’s album.THE LAST WORDAll said and done, Manmarziyaan is not your hunky dory love story. Ithas love in a more realistic form backed by some outstanding per for-mances. The music lifts up the purpose of the film proving the pointKashyap wants to say i.e. Do what pleases your hear t!

Joaquin Phoenix’s first lookas The Joker revealedIt seems like only yesterday that fans were reacting divi-sively to the first look reveal of Jared Leto as the Jokerfrom Suicide Squad, and now we have a new take on thecharacter to form opinions about. Director Todd Phillipshas shared the first official look of Joaquin Phoenix as theClown Prince of Crime, hot on the heels of several setvideos and pictures being leaked online. While the picture doesn’t show Phoenix in full makeup, weget a sense of the direction they’re taking with the charac-ter. But most impor tantly, we get a name. Karen Gillian teases a surpriseteam up for Nebula and thischaracter on Avengers 4

Actor and owner of a perfectly round head, Karen Gillian isback on the sets of Avengers 4. Karen, who plays the brightblue Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, posted apicture from her make up room upon her return and teasedher fans with an exciting development. This will sound weird but Karen took a selfie of herselfholding co-star Pom Klementieff’s decapitated head. Notreally, she is holding a fake red clay model of Pom’s headbut it is still quite unnerving. “Back on @avengers. [email protected] to keep me company.#nebulaandmantis,” she captioned the photo. Pom playsthe all-feeling Mantis in the movies. The picture has sent ripples through the Marvel fan com-munity who are wondering if this could mean a possibleteam-up for the two ladies in the upcoming film. Will bequite difficult considering Thanos turned Mantis to dust inAvengers: Infinity War in The Snappening. Nebula and IronMan were the only two people who could survive the lethalsnap on Thanos’ home planet, Titan. After the new picture, an old interview has resur faced onTwitter which shows Karen talking about her ‘new BFF’ inAvengers 4. “I know who her new BFF is and I can’t tellyou. I can’t. But I promise you it’s brilliant and unexpectedand just so good,” she says in the interview.Nebula is expected to be on a mission to find her genocidalmaniac of a father and end him before he creates more chaos. Thelast time we saw her, she was the one who unwittingly lead him tothe Soul Stone in Vormir. What happened afterwards wasthe mass murder that we are still crying over.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA GIVES NICK JONAS THESWEETEST BIRTHDAY KISS EVER

‘Priyanka Chopra gave her fiance,Nick Jonas, the sweetest birthday kissever in a new Instagram pic.

A day after they were spotted kissing publicly for the first time, newlyengaged couple Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas celebrated his bir th-day at a football (the American kind) game in Texas. Priyanka wishedher ‘baby’ on Instagram with a picture in which she can be seenaffectionately kissing him.Priyanka also posted three videos from the game on her Instagramstory. She seemed amazed at the cheerleaders’ moves in the videos, and wrote ‘woah!’ on one of them.Nick and Priyanka were spotted showing some serious PDA at astadium in Anaheim, California on Saturday, a day before Jonas turned26. Priyanka, Nick and many of his friends and family, including brotherJoe Jonas, had gathered for celebrations in California.Priyanka shared a picture of the group on Instagram, playing cardsand have a great time. For the festivities, Priyanka looked chic in arust ensemble and tied her hair in a sophisticated updo to reveal herglowing skin, while Nick wore a casual grey tee.Priyanka also shared a series of photos on her Instagram story, in-cluding a side shot of Nick beaming, with the caption, “Bir thday week-end begins”. Just a few days ago, the couple was spotted holdinghands, snuggling up and laughing while having dinner with their friends

Hollywood producer Brian Grazer, his wife Veronica Smiley Grazerand Priyanka’s manager Anjula Acharia at Malibu’s Nobu restaurant. After sharing their globe-trotting romance with the world — they’vegone from Mumbai to Mexico to Singapore — Priyanka and Nickended up in LA.Priyanka and Nick made their engagement official on August 18 inMumbai with a traditional roka ceremony in which their families par-ticipated as well. It was held at her residence. Later, they postedpictures from the ceremony on their Instagram profiles and let theworld know. The pair has reportedly been dating since May 2018, andmet at the 2017 Met Gala. Dating rumours began swirling after Priyankaand the American singer ar rived to the 2017 event together, bothdecked in Ralph Lauren.

Abhishek Bachchan: I’ve done more films with Aishwaryathan any other female co-star, she brings out the best in meAbhishek Bachchan doesn’t “really like talking about romance”. For him,“it differs from relationship to relationship”. Yet, in his latest release,Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan, he plays a romantic character. Thefilm marks his comeback to the big screen after two years and that toowith Anurag, with whom he had a rather unpleasant past. That they bothhave moved on is evident, given that the film-maker’s much-talked-about production, Gulab Jamun, will witness the return of hit pair Abhishek-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan [wife-actor] after eight years. Amidst a busy schedule,Abhishek sits down for a quick chat around his work, family and more:What was Anurag’s brief to you regarding your character, Robbie?Film-=making is a collaborative ar t, and Anurag is a collaborative direc-tor. He likes the involvement of his actors, and that helped. Regarding mylook, he sprung it up on me last minute. ‘Why don’t you wear a turban’ iswhat he said. Robbie is a mona Punjabi. He wears the turban out ofrespect for his parents. What I liked about him is that he isn’t atraditionalist but he has a great sense of values and morals.Your next is Gulab Jamun, also with Anurag. It seems youboth have left the past behind...Once you work with Anurag, it turns out to be a very emo-tional experience. He is definitely one of the most givingdirectors I’ve ever worked with. He is very gracious. Hemakes you feel very comfor table to share your soul witheverybody. It’s also the film that’ll see you and Aishwarya together afterover eight years…It’s the comfor t level. I don’t have to forge a relationship, which most actors do with their co-stars. Also, I thinkI’ve done more films with Aishwarya than any otherfemale co-star. She has always brought outthe best in me. I am excited to get in front of

the camera with her once again.Growing up in a family filled with creative individuals, is your daughter,Aaradhya also creatively inclined?Well, yes she is a creative child. But she is only six so she does every-thing. There’s a lot of time still she decides what she wants to do.Many people feel Agastya (sister Shweta Bachchan Nanda’s son) lookslike you...No, [Agastya] does not look like me. He looks like his father. If you seeNikhil’s [Nanda] childhood photos, you will see they look the same. There is speculation that Agastya and Navya Naveli Nanda (Agastya’selder sister) might venture into acting? Not that they have told me. Navya (21) is busy with her University. She isstudying communication and marketing. And from what I know she is

busy being a student right now, and so is Agastya (18). He is inschool. I think it’s too early for them to decide what their career

should be.Talking about your exit from Paltan, JP Dutta told us that

the wound is too fresh for him to comment.JP sahab introduced me to cinema. He is my mentor andis like family to me. My relationship with him goes be-yond films. He treats me like his son. It was devastatingfor me to not be able to stand by him during this journey of

Paltan and not be a par t of it. I’m so excited that the filmreleased. There were circumstances that were beyond

my control. He knows I’m always there for him. Thathe is still emotional about the incident is com-

pletely understandable. I will have to meethim, and he will have to get it out of his

system. He means a lot to meand I know I mean a lot to him.

Anushka Sharma, Virat Kohli’s PDA is a victory for paparazziVirat Kohli and Anushka Sharma were spotted at the airpor t, wherethe paparazzi’s hounding paid off and the couple hugged for the cam-era before depar ting in separate cars.In a video shared by photographer Viral Bhayani on Instagram, theIndian cricketer and his actor wife can be exiting the airpor t terminal. They’re blinded by flashing cameras, but luckily they’re wearing darkglasses, even though it is dark outside. But to everyone’s delight, the two hug briefly before heading out inseparate cars. When someone asks Virat if Anushka will be travellingwith him, he can even be heard saying that no, she’s already left.In a recent interview, Anushka said that the key to their relationship isthat they do not let their professions come in between and live life likeany other normal couple."We try to create a proper work-life balance. Both of us really lovedoing what we do professionally. Our priorities are very clear in life. But at the same time we try and find time to do something together. We don't take our professions or our career too seriously. "We don'tdraw our identity only from that. We are very simple and like doingnormal things. For the world it is about our professions. But in realityit is just normal. It is as normal as any one would be in a relationship. We don't see each other in terms of our profession," Anushka saidduring a session at the India Today Mind Rocks 2018.

She was promoting her upcoming movie Sui Dhaaga: Made In India atthe event along with co-star Varun Dhawan.Varun described Virat as one of the most humble persons he has evermet. "He is really humble. I knew him even before I became friendswith Anushka. He is very down to earth and a great player," he added.Anushka and Virat tied the knot last year in December in Italy.

ASIA CUP: DESPITE CHAMPIONS TROPHY WIN, PAK CAPTAIN

SARFRAZ AHMED CAUTIOUS BEFORE INDIA CLASH

A comprehensive win over Hong Kong is a per fect start butPakistan captain Sar fraz Ahmed says his team will have toraise the game by several notches to outwit arch-rivals India

in the much-awaited Asia Cup clash on Wednesday.Pakistan defeated Hong Kong by eight wickets Sunday night in theAsia Cup. Sar fraz said his team needs to iron out a few thingsbefore the clash against India."As a captain, I saw a couple of things which we should work on.For us to go the distance in the tournament, we should have wonthis game (against Hong Kong) by nine or 10 wickets."We also need to ball better with the new ball. We need to getearly wickets with the new ball. It didn't swing for us with the newball, that is alarming for us," Sar fraz said af ter the match."We will work on it in our next practice session. It's a good winbut to win against India we have to be at our best in all the threedepar tments," he added.Lef t-arm pacer Usman Khan was the star per former for Pakistanand was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match for picking up three wick-ets in an over that helped Pakistan bowl out Hong Kong for apaltry 116.

Pakistan chased down the target with consummate ease, scoring120 for 2 in 23.4 overs."When I came to bowl in the first spell, I tried to pick wickets withthe new ball, but luck was not with me. In the second spell, I got the ballto reverse swing and I managed to take wickets," Usman said.Usman, however, was pulled out midway through his eighth overand hobbled off the ground raising fitness concerns. However, the 24-year-old said it was a case of minor bleedingwhich he suffered after slipping on the field."It's alright. I was bleeding from my feet but all is fine right now.I just slipped a little bit so I thought it would be safe to get itchecked," he said.Hong Kong skipper Anshuman Rath blamed his batsmen for notbeing able to put enough runs on the board."Lots of soft dismissals. 120 (116) was not enough. It was a goodwicket. Credit goes to the Pakistan bowlers," he said."Our off-spinners are top class, but we just didn't have enough runson the board. I think early on, it swung a bit, there was a bit of bounce."We got through the start, but we couldn't conver t it. One fif ty-runpar tnership is not enough to post a good total," he added.

‘While Virat Kohli recently said thatmentoring youngsters was anintegral part of his job as captain,MS Dhoni had promised to be Kohli’s‘unofficial’ vice-captain afterstepping down as skipper of thelimited-overs team in 2017.

MUMBAI: Regular skipper Virat Kohli might have been rested for theongoing Asia Cup, keeping his workload in mind, but for the young-sters in the team, they have their favourite ‘Mahi bhai’ to fall on forany problem. Ambati Rayudu had said on Saturday that MS Dhoni’spresence was a big boost for this team in Kohli’s absence. Interest-ingly, Rayudu isn’t the only one who feels that Dhoni plays per fectsecond fiddle to skipper Kohli in this Indian limited-overs unit when itcomes to the role of mentoring the players and helping them copewith the pressure of international cricket.Speaking to Hindustan Times, a member of the current set-up saidthat the best part about the combination of Dhoni and Kohli is howthey make the youngsters feels at home.“Mahi bhai is very suppor tive of the young players coming into theteam. Not even for a moment do you feel that you are entering into ateam of champions. Even at the nets, you will see him always helpingthe bowlers. He guides them on how to prepare for a game from hisown experience and what he has seen on the wicket. The best par t isthat when we walk out to field, after a couple of overs he will tell thebowlers exactly which are the areas to bowl on and how the bowlerneeds to work on his speed and variations. Similarly, Virat bhai likesto give the players freedom to express himself and not get boggeddown by the pressure of representing the country,” he said.Kohli had recently in an interview said that his job was as much to

mentor youngsters in the team as it was to take the team forward inits journey to become the best in the world across all formats.Another youngster in the Indian set-up said that the duo of Kohli andDhoni make it a delight to be a par t of the squad. “When you come ininitially, you feel a little wary to approach them. But you soon realisethat they are very approachable and welcoming. The decisions aretaken in unison and Dhoni bhai is always there to bring up any ploy orstrategy that might strike him on the field. He is almost like the field-ing vice-captain who is constantly guiding us. Leading a team isn’teasy, but Dhoni bhai plays the per fect second fiddle and makes thejob that much easier for Kohli bhai,” he revealed.

ABU DHABI: Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim joinedan elite list after he slammed a brilliant 144 off 150 balls toguide his team to victory over Sri Lanka in the openingmatch of Asia Cup 2018 in Dubai on Saturday. By vir tue ofhis innings, Mushfiqur became joined Indian cricket teamcaptain Virat Kohli and former Pakistan cricketer YounisKhan in the list of highest individual scorers in Asia Cup history.Kohli leads the list with 183 that he scored against Pakistan in 2012while Younis Khan is second with 144 against Hong Kong in2004. On Saturday, Mushfiqur leapfrogged compatriot ShoaibMalik (143 in 2004 vs India) and Virat Kohli (136 vsBangladesh in 2004) to claim the third position in the list.

Here's why VirenderSehwag resigned fromDDCA cricket committee

Former India opener Virender Sehwag Monday said heresigned from the Delhi and Districts CricketAssociation's cricket committee keeping the body's in-terests in mind.Sehwag, along with committee members Aakash Chopraand Rahul Sanghvi, had recommended the retention ofManoj Prabhakar as bowling coach but it wasn't ratifiedby the management. It couldn't be confirmed if that was the trigger for Sehwag'sresignation. However, as per DDCA sources, the trio'sresignation was accepted because the state body willsubmit a new constitution as per Supreme Cour t ordersin the next two days and fresh panels need to be ap-pointed. When Sehwag was asked whether Prabhakar'snon-appointment led to his resignation, he gave an open-ended reply. ''We had come together and given time andeffor t with the idea of contributing and helping in theimprovement of Delhi cricket within the framework ofour role as a cricket committee," Sehwag told PTI.''However, looking at the best interest of Delhi Cricket,we would like to inform you that all three of us would notbe able to continue with the assignment of Cricket Com-mittee of DDCA any further due to our busy schedule inday to day life," he added. It is believed that skipperGautam Gambhir is against Prabhakar's appointment ashe had been named in the 2000 match-fixing scandal."Gautam has always followed this principle that he doesn'twant anyone remotely involved in malpractice likematch-fixing to be a part of Delhi dressing room," a DDCAofficial said on condition of anonymity."However, it is wrong to say that Sehwag and Gambhirhad a tiff on Prabhakar issue as the latter was specialinvitee to the panel. "After the new constitution is adopted,Sehwag would have been hit by Conflict of Interest clauseas he is an exper t in the DDCA president's channel. Simi-larly, Sanghvi is associated with Mumbai Indians. Sothey knew they had to go," the official said. However, whenasked why Gambhir didn't protest in 2007-08 when Delhi wonRanji Trophy and Prabhakar was the bowling coach at thattime or for that matter last year, the official known for hisproximity to Gambhir gave a different reply.

VIRAT KOHLI: PROLIFICBATSMAN, YES. BUTINSPIRING LEADER?There is no denying the fact that Virat Kohli, the batsman, hasmanaged to overcome demons of 2014 horror show in England, especially against his nemesis James Anderson. His 593 runs with the help of two hundreds and three half-centuries have put him along with some of the great playerswho have scored under every conditions and on all surfaces. But, can the same be said of Kohli, the captain? That's the debate right now after the Indian team wasoutplayed 1-4 by the not-so-superior English team. Kohlihas the habit of over-reacting to a situation. If, as a skipper,he is demanding more from his team, as was the case afterthe Lord's Test debacle, then he has to realise that it's askipper's job to push his players to per form at their maxi-mum.Questions have been asked about the qualities he lackedas a captain. His inability to set field placements duringtense moments, team selections on many occasions havecome to the fore. One would say that it could be lack of experience to handleleadership under pressure. But, the fact remains that Kohlihas failed from team selections to field placements to man-management to reading the conditions/pitch and even tothe use of Decision Review System (DRS).One would say that former chief coach Anil Kumble wasright in his assessment that "Kohli does need someone toshow him the mirror". Unfortunately, that's not happening atthe moment as the man who could do so in the dressingroom (read Ravi Shastri) is only playing along with him. There is none in the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) right now to do so.

Usman Khan took three wickets before opener Imam-ul-Haq hitan unbeaten fifty as Pakistan notched up a dominating eight-wicket win over minnows Hong Kong in a group A match of the

Asia Cup ODI tournament in Dubai on Sunday.Electing to bat, Hong Kong folded for a paltry 116 in 37.1 overs, cour-tesy Usman's 3 for 19 and two-wicket hauls by Shadab Khan (2/31)and Hasan Ali (2/19). Pakistan then returned to overhaul the target, scoring 120 for 2 in 23.4 overs, built mainly around opener Imam's69-ball unbeaten 50 that was laced with three fours and a six.Chasing 117 to win, Pakistan made a good star t with Imam and FakharZaman sharing a 41-run par tnership in 8 overs for the opening wicket.Pakistan lost their first wicket when Fakhar was caught by McKechnieoff Ehsan Khan's ball in the 9th over.Imam and new man Babar then added 52 runs to take the team closeto the target. Babar hit three fours and a six in his 36-ball 33 beforebeing caught behind by Mckechnie for Ehsan's second wicket. ShoaibMalik (9) hit the winning runs, blasting Aizaz for a boundary in the24th over.Earlier, seamer Usman (3/19) emerged as the highest wicket-taker,while Shadab Khan (2/31) and Hasan Ali (2/19) also snapped twowickets and Faheem Ashraf accounted for one as Pakistan thoroughlyexposed the weakness of Hong Kong, who won the 2018 Asia CupQualifier to make it to the tournament. Kinchit Shah (26) and AizazKhan (27) were the top-scorer for Hong Kong, while skipper AnshumanRath contributed 19 as Hong Kong couldn't negotiate the top qualitybowling from Pakistan.

Electing to bat, Hong Kong couldn't put up a resistance, losing wick-ets in regular intervals to end up with a lowly score. It star ted with arun-out as Nizakat Khan (13) walked back to the pavillion after failingto make ground with Shadab Khan knocking the stumps off from pointin the 5th over.Skipper Anshuman Rath (19) was the next to go when he was caughtbehind by wicketkeeper Sar fraz Ahmed off Faheem Ashraf as HongKong slipped to 32 for 2 in the ninth over. Hasan Ali then got intoaction, removing Christopher Car ter (2) cheaply in the 14th over. Look-ing to chip it over extra cover, Car ter ended up giving an easy catch toImam-ul-Haq as Hong Kong lost their third wicket.Leg-spinner Shadab Khan then struck twice in three balls -- dimissingBabar Hayat (7) and Ehsan Khan (0) -- as Hong Kong lost half theirside in 16.3 overs. Hayat couldn't pick up Shadab's googly and wasstumped by a huge margin by Sar fraz when the batsman danceddown the pitch. One ball later, another googly earned Shadab anotherwicket as Ehsan was trapped in front of the wicket.Kinchit Shah () and Aizaz Khan (27) then shared a crucial 53-runpar tnership for the sixth wicket to take Hong Kong closs to the 100-mark. In the 31st over, Usman Khan picked up three wickets in fivedeliveries, removing Aizaz, SS Mckechnie (0) and Tanwir Afzal (0), tofur ther reduce Hong Kong to 97 for 8.Last specialist batsman Kinchit too was back to the hut after he hit aHasan Ali ball to Shadab at backward point. Ehsan Nawaz (9) andNadeem Ahmed then took Hong Kong across the 100-mark before theformer was runout as Hong Kong was bundled out.

ABU DHABI: Mushfiqur Rahim’s superb hundred complemented by acollective effor t from the bowlers saw Bangladesh thrash Sri Lankaby 137 runs despite Lasith Malinga’s brilliant international comebackin the Asia Cup opener here Saturday.Mushfiqur scored a career-best 144 off 150 balls with 11 boundariesand four sixes for his sixth ODI hundred as Bangladesh scored 261 allout in 49.3 overs after opting to bat.Save the 131-run stand with Mohammed Mithun (63) for the thirdwicket, the former skipper didn’t get any assistance from otherBangladesh batsmen as the wily Malinga showed that he is still aforce to reckon with.Malinga, whose last ODI was against India in a home series in Sep-tember 2017, took 4/23 on his return.Chasing 262 for a win, Sri Lanka suffered a batting collapse with noneof their batsmen showing intent to stay at the crease as they were allout for 124 in 35.2 overs. This was Sri Lanka’s lowest ODI total ver-sus Bangladesh. There was no rotation of strike and no par tnership wor th the name. The highest partnership for Sri Lanka was the 27 for the eighth wicket.Sri Lanka showed the intent of a strong star t as opener Upul Tharanga(27) struck a six and three fours in the first two overs but he and his

par tner Kusal Mendis (0) perished in quick succession.Mendis was the first to go in the final delivery of the second overbowled by Mustafizur Rahman while Tharanga depar ted the next overoff Mashrafe Mortaza to leave Sri Lanka at 28 for 2 in the third over.Sri Lanka needed a top order batsman to stick around but one downDhananjaya de Silva (0) was not able to do that as he was trappedLBW off Mor taza as the ball nipped back in from off -stump. Sri Lankawere 32 for 3 then. The next four overs gave just four runs as Sri Lanka went into a shellbut Bangladesh still found a way out to get a wicket as Mehidy Hasansent Kusal Perera (11) back in the dressing room.Perera went forward to defend but the ball beat the bat and struckthe pad for the umpire to raise his finger. Sri Lanka were in deeptrouble then as they were 42 for 4 after the first powerplay 10overs. Sri Lanka survived for another six overs with captain AngeloMathews (16) and Dasun Shanaka (7) trying to settle down andstitch a par tnership. But just as it seems they were on course forthat, Sri Lanka put themselves in fur ther trouble with Mathewsmaking an error of judgement. He f i rst cal led and then sentShanaka back after working the ball to the leg side off a Shakib al-Hasan delivery.
