Do now! Can you

complete the sheet “Different

Properties” you started yesterday?

Page 2: Do now!

Today’s lesson

• Know how good metals and non-metals are at conducting heat and electricity

• Know which metals are magnetic

• Know some of the other properties of metals and non-metals

• Know that different metals have different uses because of their properties

Page 3: Do now!

Properties of Metals?

Page 4: Do now!

Properties of Metals

ALL metals are good conductors of heat and electricity

Electrons can easily move from atom to atom in the metal carrying energy

Page 5: Do now!

Properties of Metals

Non metals tend to be poor conductors of heat and electricity.

Their electrons are bound tightly.

with the exception of graphite (carbon)

Page 6: Do now!

Properties of Metals

Some metals are magnetic

Only iron (steel), cobalt and nickel

Page 7: Do now!

Properties of Metals

Metals generally have high melting points

With the exception of mercury and the alkali metals (Lithium, sodium, potassium….)

Tungsten melts at 3422 ºC

Properties of metals

Most metals are also malleable and ductile

Uses

Their properties dictate their uses

Page 11: Do now!

Gold

Unreactive, malleable and a good conductor of electricity

Jewelry, wires in computers, gold leaf

Page 12: Do now!

Aluminium

Light, and a very unreactive oxide layer forms over the reactive metal means it does not corrode

Aircraft, cars, cutlery etc.

Page 13: Do now!

Steel (mainly iron)

Strong, fairly cheap.

Building

Page 14: Do now!

Copper

Ductile, unreactive and a good conductor

Saucepans, wires etc.
