Journals – What are they Good for?

1) Journals will serve as a place for less-structured writing assignments.

2) Most of your homework will be written in the journal.

3) They will be graded two times a marking period (1/2 way through and at the end).

Why do we need to annotate a text? (REVIEW)

Expert readers know that deep understanding comes from interacting with a text and from multiple reads *.

What does it mean to “annotate” a text?

Annotation: - a way of adding notes to a text. The notes assist a reader’s understanding of the text.

We need a system for annotating . . .

1) Informational texts (essays) require a slightly different system than works of literature (stories, novels, etc.)2) It also makes a difference upon whether we can write on the text or not.

What are the Common Core Learning Standards?

1) The standards were developed by the collective states (including NY) to have a common (nation-wide), college-ready set of skills that students need to master when graduating from high school.

1) The standards are broken up according to the grade.

2) Let’s familiarize ourselves with the standards.

We need to connect the standards with a rubric/grading

1) Look at the rubric for your grade-level.

2) TAKE 2 minutes, look at the rows and columns of the rubric, and write down any observations in CN.

1) Look at TRAIT 1: Focus Position

The criteria for success (4 score) consists of the following:

A) A precise and credible position (claim), grounded in evidence and reasoning.

YOUR TURN (5-7 MINUTES)

1) Pick one TRAIT FROM THE SIDE COLUMN.

2) Evaluate the student essay, to the best of your ability, according to the criteria described in the TRAIT row.

3) Assign a score (0-4).

FINAL STEP

1) Turn to the CCLS standards descriptions.

2) Find the standard that best corresponds to the TRAIT from the rubric (if you can’t find one, hypothesize about a matching standard).

3) In the summary section of your CN, explain how the rubric score DEMONSTRATES A SKILL OR ABILITY FROM THE STANDARD.
