LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Compare the 3 major fingerprint patterns of

arches, loops, and whorls, and their

subclasses

CREATE A GRAPHIC ORGANIZER / concept map / flow chart

Must include• The 3 major classes and subclasses of fingerprints• All of the parts of fingerprints• All of your table partner’s fingerprints – in the correct location• Any other information you think is important

Your table can ask me for help ONE TIME. Everyone will get the same grade

THIS IS A FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT (5 MINUTES)

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

DESCRIBE HOW FINGERPRINTS ARE ANALYZED

How are fingerprints analyzed?

• Level 1 is the ridge flow and the layout of the ridges. This can rule out but not convict.

• Level 2 is ridge characteristics and placement and this can allow an individual to be matched.

• Level 3 looks at the angle of the paths, width, shape, pores, edge contours, breaks, scars and cuts and this can lead to prosecutions.

How are fingerprints analyzed?

-Identify characteristics / Minutiae/ Galton Details

-Find whether the characteristics match on each print

How many details make a match?• Minutia or Galton Details make up the

individuality in a fingerprint• A match is up to experience and knowledge of

the examiner but usually 8 to 16 are needed.

Computer software compares the location of these minutiae.

AFIS The Automated Fingerprint Identification System - a

computer system for storing and retrieving fingerprints Began in the early 1970’s to:

Search large files for a set of prints taken from an individual Compare a single print, usually a latent print developed from a

crime scene By the 1990’s most large jurisdictions had their own

system in place. The problem - a person’s fingerprints may be in one AFIS but not in others

IAFIS—the FBI’s Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification system which is a national database of all 10-print cards from all over the country

NOTES

•Staple or tape these in your notebook – right page

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

IDENTIFY CHARACTERISTICS (AKA MINUTIA OR GALTON DETAILS) OF FINGERPRINTS

LEFT PAGE – formative assessment

Answer for 7 fingerprints:1) Loop, whorl, arch? PLUS the subclass… 2) Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 match?

1) Why?2) How many matching minutia? USE THE

ACADEMIC VOCAB FROM NOTES I GAVE YOU

3) Which minutia, and where are they located?

PLUS any other relevant details.
