DO NOW

• What is a frame of reference and relative motion?

Page 30: DO NOW Take out a clean piece of paper to write on. At the top answer, what is motion? Objective: describe the components needed to describe motion completely

Frame of Reference

• In order to describe motion a frame of reference is needed

• A frame of reference is a system of objects that are not moving with respect to one another.

• How fast something is moving is dependent on the frame of reference

• Relative motion is movement in relation to a frame of reference

Page 31: DO NOW Take out a clean piece of paper to write on. At the top answer, what is motion? Objective: describe the components needed to describe motion completely

Distance

• Distance is the length of the path between two points.

• The SI unit is meters and large distances use kilometers

Page 32: DO NOW Take out a clean piece of paper to write on. At the top answer, what is motion? Objective: describe the components needed to describe motion completely

Displacement

• Is the direction from the starting point and the length of a straight line from the starting point to the end point.

• It is good to use displacements for directions• You may need to combine displacements

which can be done using vector addition since displacement is an example of a vector.

Page 33: DO NOW Take out a clean piece of paper to write on. At the top answer, what is motion? Objective: describe the components needed to describe motion completely

Combining Displacements Along A Straight Line

• If in the same direction you add them • If in opposite directions you subtract them

Page 34: DO NOW Take out a clean piece of paper to write on. At the top answer, what is motion? Objective: describe the components needed to describe motion completely

Displacement Not Along A Straight Line

• When the vectors have different directions they may be combined by graphing.

• The straight line from the start to the end point is called the resultant vector and that is the displacement.

Recap

• Displacement is….. • Direction from the starting point and the

length of a straight line from the starting point to the ending point

• Distance is…… • The length of the path between two points.
