When you use a literal equation you may be asked tosolve it for one variable in terms of the others
To do this--pretend that all the other variables except forthe one you are solving for are numbers and proceed as follow the stepsfor solving equations.
Consider:
2x + 5 = 15 Solve for x: ax + b = 3b
Pretend that a and b are numbers and the variable is x.Solve using the steps you used in the numerical equation.

Practice:
Solve for x:x - a = b
Solve for x: 2ax = 10a2 - 3ax (a≠0) Why do we say that the value of a cannot equal 0?
