CHEAT SHEET FOR: “DO YOU KNOW YOUR CAMERA?” GAME

A. IMAGE PLAYBACK (Image Review)

1. Review an image: press Image Playback button to review an image you’ve taken

2. View other images:

a. Canon: press left and right on the Arrow Keys (aka Cross Keys)

b. Nikon: press left and right on the Multi Selector

3. Cycle through various image information screens (basic shooting info, histogram, highlights):

a. Canon: each time you press the DISP (Display) button, the display format will change

b. Nikon: press up or down on the Multi Selector to view different display formats

B. CHANGE IMAGE PLAYBACK SETTINGS

1. Go to the Menu / Playback Display Options

2. Enable Highlights (aka “Blinkies”) and Histogram display modes if they were not already selected.

3. Note: this option not available for some cameras, i.e., the image display modes are already fixed. If you can see both Highlights and a Histogram when you review an image, then you are all set (they may be on the same or separate screens)

C. CHANGE SHOOTING SETTING – GRIDLINES

Canon:

o go to the Menu / Shooting Display Options

o next, enable Gridlines

Nikon:

o go to the Menu / Custom Setting Menu

o next, choose Shooting/display

o then find Viewfinder grid display and turn ON

D. SHOOTING MODES

1. Find the Shooting Mode Dial and set shooting mode to Automatic

a. Canon: Set to Full Auto or Scene Intelligent Auto

b. Nikon: Set to Full Auto

2. Keep shooting mode on Automatic but turn off Flash

a. Canon: Turn mode dial to Auto-Flash Off or use Arrow buttons to turn flash off

b. Nikon: Turn mode dial to Auto-Flash Off

3. Set Scene Modes (pre-programmed shooting settings designed to work for specific scenes)

o Scene modes may be located on the Shooting Mode Dial itself or

o You may have to first choose SCENE (or SCN) on the dial, then press the Arrow Keys, the Multi Selector, or rotate the Command Dial to toggle through the different Scenes

a. Set scene mode to Portrait (camera selects a wide aperture to get background blur)

b. Set scene mode to Landscape (camera selects narrow aperture for deep depth of field)

c. Set scene mode to Sports (camera selects a fast shutter speed to freeze action)

4. Locate the following Creative modes on the Shooting Mode Dial (use the Command Dial or use the Arrow Keys to change the value)

a. Shutter Priority: Tv (“time value”) on Canon | S on Nikon – change the shutter speed

b. Aperture Priority: Av on Canon | S on Nikon – change the aperture size

c. Manual: M on both Canon and Nikon (you will likely have use 2 different controls, one to change aperture value and the other to change the shutter speed)

E. OTHER SHOOTING SETTINGS

1. Find and change ISO (controls the sensitivity of your camera’s image sensor to light)

o Locate ISO and put on Auto ISO (this is the default for most cameras)

2. Find and change shutter Release Mode (tells camera what to do when you press the shutter button)

o Select S (for single shot)

o Select Continuous (camera takes multiple shots as long as you hold down the shutter button; good for wildlife and action shots)

3. Find and use Timer Button (very useful to prevent camera shake or to include yourself in group portraits when shooting on a tripod)

4. Turn on Live View shooting mode (i.e., you use the rear LCD screen to shoot instead of the viewfinder)

o On some cameras, you may need to first enable Live View mode in the Shooting Menu, then

o Canon: - set dial to still photo, then press the < START/STOP > button

o Nikon: - pull Live View (LV) lever towards you; push lever back to exit Live View

o Note: On point & shoot cameras without out a viewfinder, you will always be shooting in Live View

5. Locate Exposure Compensation controls & change values

Note: Exposure compensation is not available in Automatic Mode; you must be in one of the following shooting modes to use it: A (Av), S (Tv), M, or P
