You may be the parent of a child with additional needs, the partner of someone with memory problems, the neighbour of someone with an illness. Whatever your caring situation, we are here to help.

The support that you give may include:

• Helping around the house—cleaning, cooking, household chores.

• Assisting with personal care.

• Providing emotional support.

• Helping with forms and paperwork.

• Making or attending appointments.

• Assisting with or administering medication.

• Providing transportation.

Taking care of someone else and getting the right support for them often means that you forget about your own wellbeing. We are here to support you.

A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.

Connecting with Carers Our groups, Carers Cafés and training workshops allow you to take a break, meet carers who understand your caring experiences, learn something new and support your wellbeing.

Supporting your Wellbeing Our trained staff can provide you with individual support, the opportunity to apply for an NHS Carers Grant, counselling and relaxation therapy.

What is the Carers Lounge? The Carers Lounge is a confidential space in the hospital where you can get information and support.

In the Carers Lounge we can offer you emotional support as well as give you advice and information. This may be about the hospital discharge process and continuing care following discharge. We can also tell you about ongoing support available from Carers in Bedfordshire as well as other local and national services.

Where is the Carers Lounge? We are opposite the Faith and Belief Room in Bedford Hospital’s South Wing. You don’t need an appointment to visit us--just drop in!

Who are Carers in Bedfordshire? The Carers Lounge is run by Carers in Bedfordshire, a local charity who help unpaid carers of all ages to cope with the emotional and physical stresses which arise from their caring role.

“ There is always someone to talk to. Coming to the Carers Lounge for half an hour for a cup of tea and a chat makes me feel better.” – June, Adult Carer
