Divine Service Sunday – 8:30 & 10:45 AM

February 12, 2017 Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany

Welcome to Peace! – The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone.

Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer:

Prayer of the Day Lord God, in mercy receive the prayers of your people. Grant them the wisdom to know the things that please You and the grace and power always to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service.

Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side.

The Divine Service with Holy Communion Rite 2, p. 60

Opening Hymn: #224, “The Only Son from Heaven”

The Invocation P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

The Confession of Sin P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God,

our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord;

4

P: Let us bow before the Lord and confess our sins.

C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I a poor, miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: I ask each of you, in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins?

C: I do.

P: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in His name?

C: I do.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. May He comfort your heart by His holy Absolution, and strengthen you by His Sacraments, that your joy may be full. Peace be with you!

C: Amen.

The Introit P: Worship Him, all you gods; Zion hears and is glad. The daughters of Judah rejoice

because of Your judgments, O Lord. The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of the isles be glad.

The Salutation

The Collect P: Let us pray…one God, now and forever.

The Lesson – Deuteronomy 30:15-20 15See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16For I

command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

17But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

19This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The Epistle – 1 Corinthians 2:6-13 6We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the

wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9However, as it is written:

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"—

10but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11For who among men

knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

8:30 – Adult Choir, “Halle, Halle, Halle” Refrain: Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

1. Oh God, to whom shall we go? You alone have the words of life. Let your words be our prayer and the song we sing: Hallelujah, hallelujah. [Refrain]

2. My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord. When I call them, they follow me. I will lead them to rest by the restful streams: Hallelujah, hallelujah. [Refrain]

3. I am the light of the world, says the Lord. Walk in the light of life. All who follow my words shall have life indeed: Hallelujah, hallelujah. [Refrain]

10:45 – Youth Choir, “Bless the Lord” Bless the Lord Oh my soul, oh my soul Worship His holy name Sing like never before Oh my soul I’ll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning It’s time to sing Your song again Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me Let me be singing when the evening comes

You’re rich in love And You’re slow to anger Your name is great And Your heart is kind For all Your goodness I will keep on singing 10, 000 Reasons for my heart to find

And on that day when my strength is failing The end draws near and my time has come Still my soul will sing Your praise unending 10,000 Years and then forever more

The Holy Gospel P: The Holy Gospel for the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany is written in the 5th chapter

of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the 21st verse.

The Gospel – Matthew 5:21-37 21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and

anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, 'is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

25"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

31"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' 32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

33"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' 34But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; 35or by the earth, for it is his

12

footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Creed P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead;

13

Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. Amen.

The Chief Hymn: #441, “O that the Lord Would Guide My Ways”

The Sermon: Matthew 5:21-37 Do You Really Think You Are Good?

P: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus unto everlasting life. Amen.

The Preface P: The Lord be with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

16

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

The Proper Preface and Sanctus P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give

thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; and now we praise You that You sent us Your only-begotten Son and that in Him, being found in fashion as a Man, You manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Holy, Holy, Holy

17

The Lord’s Prayer P: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will

be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

18

The Words of Institution P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when

He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: “Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

In FPU, you will learn how to communicate with your spouse about money, put together a spending plan that works, and completely eliminate debt. While completing the class, the average family through FPU pays off more than $5000 dollars in debt and saves almost $3000.

FPU teaches you how to apply biblical principles to the way you handle money and how to start truly managing all the resources God has given you. This class breaks down the process into easy steps that will help you no matter where you are. Sign up at http://www.daveramsey.com/fpu/classes/1029454
