Doane Baseball 20122

The Doane baseball team continues to build on a strong foundation made for success and the Tigers reached new heights in 2011. Doane claimed a share of the regular season conference title, their fi rst since 1989, and won the GPAC post-season tournament. The post-season tournament title advanced the Tigers to their fi rst-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance as they qualifi ed for the Opening Round bracket in Oklahoma City.

Doane will enter the 2012 season with expectations that will either equal or exceed what they accomplished last year. The conference coaches picked Doane as the preseason favorite for the regular season crown, just ahead of Northwestern College. For the second straight year, the team set a new mark for wins as they posted 37 a year after notching 30. Doane opens the season receiving votes in the NAIA poll, only the second time in school history that Doane has received votes. Last year, the Tigers were recognized for a week in mid-April.

Coach Jeremy Jorgensen returns for his fi fth year at the helm of the baseball program. He will return several starters from a year ago. If they remain healthy, this year’s team could be one of the deepest in talent in school history.

INFIELDThe Tigers lone spot to fi ll on the infi eld will be at fi rst base. Following the graduation of Jason West and an injury to Mike Korsakas just before the season opener, the Tigers will have to fi ll the position with a new player. Chris Manning and Justin Povich are the front runners for the position.

AJ Spanel returns at second base and hit .350 last year for the Tigers. He fi nished third on the team with 37 RBIs and had 94 defensive assists.

Anthony Hincy returns at shortstop where he was named the GPAC Gold Glove recipient for the second straight year. He batted .337 and led the team with 61 runs scored and 26 stolen bases. Hincy added a team-high 132 defensive assists.

At third base, Ethan Schroeder posted solid numbers in his fi rst season. Schroeder batted .287 with 28 RBIs and 87 defensive assists.

Anthony Dunn is back behind the plate for Doane where he threw out 28 (37-percent) attempted base stealers. Dunn hit .305 with 35 RBIs and led the team with six sacrifi ce fl ies.

OUTFIELDThe Tigers return all three outfi elders from last year’s team but may reshuffl e the outfi eld slightly and utilize the designated hitter position to allow players to get at-bats if they are not out for defense.

The mainstay is in right fi eld where Mike Albert returns after earning a Gold Glove last year. He converted all 90 opportunities he had in right fi eld for a 1.000 fi eld percentage. In addition to leading the team on defense, Albert posted team highs in batting average (.389), hits (72), RBIs (62), doubles (16) and home runs (4).

Thomas Albert is expected to move from left fi eld to center fi eld this season. In his fi rst year with the Tigers, Albert batted .269 and was second on the team with 23 stolen bases.

Dylan Flott returns and will serve as a utility outfi elder and also fi ll in at the designated hitter position in some games. He hit .267 and scored 28 runs a year ago.

In left fi eld, newcomers Alex Arkfeld and Andres Rivera will compete for playing time as well as serve in the designated hitter role in various games.

PITCHINGThe strength of the team may be in the pitching staff, in particular the starting pitching. Last year, Doane pitching posted a 3.47 earned run average (ERA) with 15 complete games.

Chance Brull was the GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Year and a NAIA All-American selection last year after posting a 1.62 ERA with an 8-2 record. He was chosen as a pre-season All-American in November as the Tigers’ prepared for the 2012 season.

Nick Dawson posted a 6-3 record and a 1.92 ERA last year after transferring in for Doane. He tied for team-high honors in strikeouts with Brull with 66. Sophomores Elliott Engle and Tim Carlson will round out the rotation heading into the season. Engle was the winning pitcher in Doane’s championship game against Midland in the GPAC Tournament.

Head Coach Jeremy Jorgensen Head Coach Jeremy Jorgensen took over the Doane baseball program in June 2007 and is working to build a strong baseball tradition at Doane College. The transition is off to a strong start as Doane won the conference regular season and post-season titles in 2011 and qualifi ed for the NAIA National Opening Round for the fi rst time in school history.

In his fi rst season, Jorgensen’s Tigers went 22-28 overall, 11-13 in the GPAC. Statistically, the Tigers saw an improvement in all three facets of the game, offense, defense and pitching. The team’s batting average, fi elding percentage and earned run average saw improvements. The Tigers had six players earn All-GPAC honors, including one First Team selection in Mike Mendenhall. Dean Henson earned the GPAC Gold Glove for defense in left fi eld, the fi rst Tiger to be honored with the award.

Year Two saw a similar season for the Tigers under Jorgensen as they went 18-28 and 12-12 in the GPAC. Pitching and defense continued to improve as the offense held steady. Four players received All-GPAC honors, with Mendenhall receiving First Team honors once again. Anthony Hincy and Blake Snow brought home Second Team honors. Doane missed the conference tournament by a single game as they dropped three of their fi nal four to end the year.

The 2010 season was one for the record books. Doane posted a 30-18 overall, a school record for wins in a season. The Tigers also went 13-11 in the GPAC and qualifi ed for the conference tournament for the fi rst time since the 2003 season. The Tigers swept Nebraska Wesleyan on the fi nal day of the regular season, notching a pair of 2-1 victories. Doane set a school record for batting average in a season as they hit .330 on the year.

Eight players received conference honors with Dexter Spitsnogle earning First Team Honors. Anthony Hincy and Thomas Frinkman posted Second Team honors for the Tigers. Spitsnogle excelled in the classroom as well and earned Third Team Academic All-American honors from ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA. Hincy and Snow received GPAC Gold Glove honors at shortstop and right fi eld, respectively.

In a season full of victories, one of the most impressive came against Warner University during the Tigers’ Spring Break Trip to Florida. Warner was ranked No. 20 entering the doubleheader and Doane took game one, 17-2. The Tigers had 14 hits in that game, including a 3-of-4 effort from Mike Albert as he scored three runs and drove in three. Doane’s fi nish in conference play is even more impressive after opening the GPAC 0-5. They went on to win 13 of their fi nal 19 conference games.

Once again, a new year brought new records in 2011 for Jorgensen’s Tigers. Doane went 37-19 overall and 16-6 in the GPAC. Doane fi nished in a three-way tie for the regular season crown and came out of the consolation bracket to win the GPAC post-season tournament and a berth to the NAIA National Opening Round for the fi rst time in school history. A school record was set once again for overall wins and a new mark set for wins in conference play. The pitching staff posted a 3.47 earned run average, a school record. During the season, Doane was receiving votes in the NAIA national poll, a fi rst in school history.

For Jorgensen, he went over 100 career victories as the Tigers’ head coach during the season and became only the second coach in school history to lead a Doane team to a GPAC regular season title.

Individual honors were plentiful for the Tiger players as well in 2011. Chance Brull earned NAIA honorable mention All-American honors after earning GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Year recognition. Anthony Hincy and Mike Albert received First Team honors as well as Gold Glove honors, Hincy at shortstop and Albert for right fi eld. Nathan Roth received First Team honors as a pitcher. In total, 10 players were recognized by the conference.

In post-season play, Doane went 5-1 in the GPAC Tournament. After an opening game win over Mt. Marty, Doane fell by a run to Sioux Falls. The Tigers proceeded to win four elimination games, defeating Hastings and Midland on Championship Saturday. The NAIA Opening Round appearance for the Tigers took place in Oklahoma City. The Tigers faced off against the University of Texas-Brownsville, who was making their second appearance. Doane came away with a 9-2 victory in their fi rst ever Opening Round game. The Tigers eventually bowed out with losses to Oklahoma City and Fresno Pacifi c.

In Jorgensen’s four years, Doane has compiled 107 wins. There have been 28 players to earn All-GPAC honors as well as fi ve Gold Glove winners. The Tigers have had 28 GPAC Scholar-Athletes, seven NAIA Scholar-Athletes, one Academic All-American and four Academic All-District honorees. In 2011, the Tiger baseball team was recognized as a NAIA Scholar-Team for posting a grade point average above a 3.0.

2011 Season in Review

Page 33: Doane Baseball Media Guide 2012

Media & Recruit Guide 31

The 2011 season was the most successful in school history as they team won a school-record 37 games and received their fi rst NAIA Opening Round Tournament berth. Doane tied for the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season title and won the post-season tournament. The regular season crown was the fi rst since the 1989 season and the tournament title was the second in school history, last happening in 2002. Ten players received all-conference honors, also a school-record.

The Tigers longest win streak on the season was nine games, from April 1 to April 10. Doane also opened conference play with 10 straight victories. In the GPAC Tournament, the Tigers claimed four elimination-game victories. In the NAIA Opening Round Tournament, Doane defeated the University of Texas-Brownsville in the opening game.

Chance Brull was the fi rst Tiger pitcher named GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Year. He was named a NAIA All-American, only the fourth Tiger to earn the honor. Anthony Hincy and Mike Albert were named to the GPAC Gold Glove team. Albert was joined by AJ Spanel on the Capital One Academic All-District team presented by CoSIDA. Albert and Anthony Dunn were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Coach Jeremy Jorgensen reached 100 coaching victories as the Tiger head coach in Doane’s win over Concordia University in game two on April 22.

Welcome From the GPAC Commissioner...Welcome to the GPAC website! The membership of the Great Plains Athletic Conference welcomes you to our on-line home. We hope that you fi nd all the infomation you need about the GPAC on this site, but if you have additional quesitons please contact me at [email protected]. The GPAC is extremely proud of our athletic accomplishments, but we are also pleased to announce that in 2010-2011 our league totaled 528 NAIA Scholar-Athletes! Our student athletes work very hard to balance academics with athletics and this is a testament to the administrators, faculty, and coaches in the league. 2011-12 marks our 12th year as the Great Plains Athletic Conference, with the league founded originally as the Nebraska-Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) in 1969. Thank you again for taking the time to visit our website and supporting the more than 4,000 student-athletes in the GPAC! The History of the Great Plains Athletic Conference...The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affi liated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 11 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retains fi ve of the six charter members - Concordia, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001.Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. Both schools are in Sioux City, Iowa.In the summer of 2010 Dana College ceased operations and in 2011 The University of Sioux Falls left the GPAC to join NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The GPAC sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports - nine for women and ten for men - and awards an All-Sports Trophy based on the fi nal league standings and conference meet results at the end of each school year. Wrestling has added as a sanctioned GPAC sport for 2006-2007. The GPAC is the only NAIA conference in the country to sponsor wrestling.Beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, the GPAC started awarding the Christopherson All-Academic Award. The award is a traveling trophy to be presented annually to the GPAC institution with the best academic performance by its student-athletes in all sports. The award is named in honor of Dr. Myrvin Christopherson, who recently retired as President of Dana College. Christopherson had served as the fi rst chair of the GPAC Council of Presidents. The GPAC has 19 NAIA National Champions...In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in fi ve years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. On the Road

The Tigers will take to the road at several points during the 2012 season, both for non-conference play as well as in GPAC action. In total, the baseball team will travel through eight states during the regular season. The season opens about as far straight south of Nebraska as the team can travel with a trip to Brownsville, Texas, in January. In February, Doane will travel to Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. Over Spring Break in March, they will hit the road to Florida for some baseball in the Sunshine State. In April, the team will add trips to South Dakota and Iowa.

Ben Grimes Memorial ScholarshipThe Ben Grimes Memorial Baseball Scholarship is awarded annually to a senior-to-be varsity baseball player who exhibits the love of the game of baseball as Ben did. Ben Grimes, Doane ‘99, was a four-year starter (pitcher and fi rst baseman) for the Tigers and was team captain during his junior and senior year. Tragically, he passed away in September of 2000.

In the spring of 2001, his memory was honored by retiring his number 13 at a pre-game ceremony at Tuxedo Park. A banner with Ben’s #13 now hangs on the right fi eld fence at the Ledon Baseball Field. Steve and Beth Grimes, Ben’s parents who still live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, have returned to Doane every year when the recipient of the scholarship is named. They were also on hand when the Tigers made their fi rst-ever appearance in the NAIA National Baseball Tournament in 2011 in Oklahoma City.

Ben posted a career .243 batting average with 42 runs scored and 32 RBIs. He also had a .977 fi elding percentage. On the mound, he held a 10-7 career record in 46 games. He threw 95.0 innings and struck out 74 batters.

The Doane College mission is to provide an exceptional liberal arts education in a creative, inclusive, and collaborative community where faculty and staff work closely with undergraduate and graduate students preparing them for lives rooted in intellectual inquiry, ethical values, and a commitment to engage as leaders and responsible citizens in the world. When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s fi rst private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of fi rst president David Brainerd Perry to the current 12th president, Dr. Jacque Carter, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. Today, the college serves more than 3,200 students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Crete, Lincoln, and Grand Island, Neb., and focuses on providing an exceptional educational experience for all students. The Crete campus serves approximately 1,000 residential students on 300 scenic acres. Designated a state arboretum, the once treeless landscape now boasts more than 100 varieties of trees, numerous plantings, ponds, and swans. Doane College offers bright, ambitious, and service-minded students a world-class liberal arts and sciences education grounded in the uncompromising pursuit of leadership through academic excellence, innovation, community, and the creation of a special sense of place for each individual. Leadership development underscores the students’ experience in all aspects of the college. Doane’s unique Hansen Leadership Program works with students to help enhance their leadership skills and talents, through speakers and events, alumni mentors, course offerings, community service, and other activities. Additional highlights include the four-year graduation guarantee for students…graduate within four years or the college will pay for a fi fth year of course work. A travel scholarship for students provides opportunities to travel on college-sponsored trips in the U.S. or abroad. Doane College was the fi rst institution in the nation to initiate a warranty for its education graduates to hiring school districts, and guarantees teacher education graduates a position. Doane College also offers three graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Management (MAM), Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC), and Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership.

DOANE ACADEMICS

Page 58: Doane Baseball Media Guide 2012

Doane Baseball 201256

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORTThe transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC).

In contrast to many students’ high school course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to substitute for required readings.

Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefi t of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and fi nals are all critical to any student’s academic success.

Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center.

The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance.

Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notifi cation of eligibility is sent to new students in the fi rst few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.
