2010 Doane Cross Country4

The 2010 Doane Men’s Cross Country team is looking to build off the success of qualifying for the NAIA National Championships a year ago. Led by Head Coach Brad Jenny, the Tigers will attempt to qualify for the national meet as a team for the third straight year.

The top returner for the Tigers is junior Edwin Ronoh. His 2009 season was highlight by a third place fi nish at the GPAC Championship Meet. Ronoh was a top two fi nisher for the Tigers in most of the meets last year.

A host of sophomores who gained valuable varsity experience last year will help the Tiger squad. Jarid Holliday was a top fi ve runner and Jordan Pieper regularly fi nished in the top seven. They will be asked to step in and fi ll the positions vacated by the graduating seniors.

Jory Pfl asterer, Jamil Chehade and Omar Fernandez are other runners who hope to crack the top seven, looking for a varsity spot. Steve Jerina, a senior who spent last fall studying abroad, also hopes to help the Tigers with his return.

The 2010 version of the Women’s Cross Country team will be an extremely young squad, led mostly by freshmen and sophomores. Coach Jenny lost two NAIA individual qualifi ers from a year ago.

Marysol Cazares returns to the women’s team after spending a year studying abroad and is the lone senior on the squad.

Sophomore’s Lizzie Kolbo and Jillian Ourada were both varsity runners for the Tiger’s last year and will lend valuable talent and leadership to the women. Halie Smith will return for her second season after a good track season in which she saw much improvement. A newcomer to the cross country scene will be sophomore Katherine Roemmich who will compete in cross country for the fi rst time.

A change for the Tigers and the GPAC in 2010 will be the loss of one qualifying spot due to the number of conference members this year. The GPAC Championship winners are the only teams guaranteed to advance to the NAIA National Championships in Vancouver, Washington. Other teams could qualify through the national poll and individuals can also qualify with high conference fi nishes.

Head Coach Brad Jenny took over the Tiger cross country program in 2002 after serving as an assistant the previous three years. The Tiger program has continued to excel as six athletes have earned All-American status and 30 have been NAIA Scholar-Athletes. In 2006, Brad was named the GPAC Men’s Coach-ofthe-Year after leading the Tigers to a runner-up fi nish at the conference championship meet.

The 2002 women’s squad was named to the NAIA Scholar-Team, placing 5th overall with a 3.52 grade point average. In 2004, the men’s squad placed third with a 3.60 GPA. The 2005 men’s squad also placed third, posting a 3.53 GPA.

The NAIA Scholar-Team Award was changed during the 2006-2007 season, taking in account all athletes that were out for the sport, not just the varsity athletes. The 2006 women’s team posted a 3.50 GPA. In 2007 and 2008, both the men’s and women’s squads earned the Scholar-Team Award. The women’s team earned the honor again in 2009 and posted the best GPA in the athletic department.

Brad, a 1994 Doane graduate, serves as the assistant athletic trainer and as the long distance coach for the track and fi eld team in addition to his cross country duties.

He is married to Jennifer (Einspahr) Jenny, 1999 Doane graduate, and they reside in Crete with their son, Miles.

Prior to coming arriving at Doane, Ziola was an assistant at Midland Lutheran College and taught at Arlington Public School. He has been familiar with the conference for several years, running for Hastings College while the Tigers were a member of the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (now GPAC).

He resides in Crete with his wife, Sandy, and they have one son, Ryan. Ryan is a Doane graduate and was a member of the Tiger Track & Field program.

David Dunnigan

David Dunnigan is the self-declared as the No. 1 bus driver. A throws coach and professor at Doane, Dunnigan assists the Tigers in their early season travels to meets. He also supervises the fi nishing gate for Dean White Invitational.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affi liated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 12 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retained all six of its charter members - Concordia, Dana, Doane, Hastings, Midland Lutheran and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001. Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. On June 30, 2010, Dana closed to give the GPAC 12 members.

The GPAC has 17 NAIA National Champions...In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in fi ve years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. In March of 2010 Northwestern’s women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. The GPAC has now won nine of the last ten NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championships! The GPAC has many individual NAIA and NCAA Division III National Champions in track and fi eld (Nebraska Wesleyan is dual member of both the NAIA and NCAA Division III).

Corey Westra of Sioux City, Iowa, is the GPAC Commissioner and Information Director.

DOANE CROSS COUNTRY HISTORY

Doane cross country has a long history of excellence dating back to the 1920s.

The Doane men’s cross country team has qualifi ed in 24 NAIA National Championship Meets. Several individuals have qualifed as well in years that the entire team did not. The best fi nish at the national meet was in 2004 when the team fi nished 10th overall. Headlining the men’s list of national performers is Dean White. White ran for the Tigers from 1960-63 and was a four-time All-American. In 2003, Sam Malmberg became the second male in school history to earn All-American honors. Sufi an (Kimo) Kalil joined the exclusive list, earning All-American honors in 2008 and 2009. Doane has won six conference titles through the years, claiming their titles while in the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Doane women’s cross country team has qualifi ed in 13 NAIA National Championship Meets. The best fi nish was national runner-up in 1993 and a third place fi nish in 1992. Numerious individuals have qualifed for the national meet as well. Lynn Mack was the fi rst Tiger woman to earn All-American honors in 1980. Seven years later, Kathy Waggoner earned her fi rst of two All-American honors (1987-88). In total, 11 women have earned All-American honors. Joining Waggoner with multiple All-American honors are Suzanne Weeder (1992-93), Christina Barber (1995-96), Mary Livengood (1999-2000), and Melissa Joel (2001-02). The Tigers have won seven conference titles, including fi ve straight from 1992-96.

Academic success has also been a strong point for the Tigers through the years, both as a team and individually.

In 1994 and 1995, the Tiger women posted the top grade point average in the NAIA. In 1994, Doane recorded a 3.73 GPA and in 1995 they raised the average to 3.80. In 2001, the Tigers equalled the 1995 GPA and topped the NAIA once again. In 2002, the Tigers were fi fth in the NAIA with a 3.52 GPA. The men have three Top Five fi nishes as well. In 1997, the men fi nished fourth with a 3.40 GPA. In 2004 and 2005, the team fi nished third in each year. A 3.60 GPA was the top mark by the men, posting the average in 2004.

Individually, 73 NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors have been received. Twelve men and 20 women have received the honor on more than one occassion.

NAIA HALL-OF-FAMERS

Dean White - Class of 1983Dean White was a leader on the Doane College cross country team. He fi nished in 6th place in the NAIA National Cross Country Meet in 1959, 10th in the same meet in 1960, and fourth the year after that. In 1962, White placed third in the NAIA National Cross Country Meet, third in the NAIA National Track & Field 3000 meter Steeple-Chase, and fi fth in the NAIA National Track & Field three-mile run. Also in 1962, White was presented with the AAU Outstanding Distance Runner Award. In 1963, his accomplishments in intercollegiate athletics earned him the title “Star Athlete of the Year.” For his outstanding achievements, Dean White was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1996, Doane College

initiated the “Dean White” Cross Country Meet, honoring their former athlete. A mere three years later he was inducted into the Doane College Hall-of-Fame.

Fred Beile - Class of 1987Fred Beile came to Doane College in 1961 and served as head cross country and assistant track coach. He was an assistant track coach for 12 years before becoming the head coach in 1973. His fi rst two years at Doane, Beile coached fellow NAIA Hall-of-Fame inductee Dean White. Beile also oversaw the addition of women’s cross country in the 1970s. His women’s teams became a national power in the 1990s, earning runner-up honors in 1993 and third place in 1992. During his time as the Tiger’s track head coach, Beile’s womens team won two team National Titles (2001, 2002). He coached 327 All-Americans, 60 individual National Champions, and 101 All-American Scholar Athletes. His squads won a combination

of 51 conference titles. Biele was named NAIA National Coach-of-the-Year six times and is a member of the NAIA & Doane Hall-of-Fame. Follow his “retirement” in 2002, Beile continued to coach the Tigers sprints, hurdles, and relay teams while adding more All-Americans to his already lofty resume. He offi cially retired following the 2010 track and fi eld season.

Suzanne Weeder Einspahr - Class of 2008Suzanne Weeder Einspahr is a fi ne example of the type of student-athlete that is the hallmark of the NAIA. A 1994 cum laude graduate of Doane College, she earned her degree in Business Administration and International Studies. True to the liberal arts tradition, her undergraduate studies included a year abroad studying in Japan. The year hiatus proved to be valuable for Einspahr from both an academic and athletic perspective. Riddled with injuries her fi rst two years in both cross country and track, the time in Japan provided the relief she needed. When she returned, she became one of the most dominant distance performers in her era. Einspahr became a seven-time NAIA All-American in track and fi eld

and two-time All-American in cross country. She claimed national titles in the indoor mile and outdoor 3000 meters in 1994 and took home runner-up fi nishes in the 1993 and 1994 outdoor 1500 meters. Her leadership contributed to unprecedented success for the Doane women’s cross country and track and fi eld teams. The Tigers took home a third place fi nish in cross country in 1992 and a second place fi nish in 1993. The track and fi eld team earned a 1994 third place indoor fi nish and a runner-up title at the 1994 outdoor national championship. Einspahr’s competitive spirit inspired others wanting to stretch themselves to new levels of excellence. She was inducted into the Doane Hall-of-Fame in 2009.

Dr. Mary Livengood Sutherland - Class of 2010Dr. Mary Livengood is a 2001 graduate of Doane College and was an excellent example of the type of scholar-athlete that is a hallmark of both the NAIA and Doane. Livengood’s individual accomplishments are extensive in both cross country and track & fi eld. From an institutional perspective, none of those accomplishments are more important than her performances at the 2001 National Outdoor Championships. In 2001, Livengood was National Champion at both 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Those performances were instrumental in Doane winning the 2001 Women’s Outdoor Championship, a fi rst in school history. Livengood’s athletic accomplishments reveal a person who persisted over her

four years at Doane, placing virtually fi rst in every major event during her senior year. In addition to her athletic success, Livengood was a model student, achieving Dean’s List recognition each of her eight semesters. Livengood’s collegiate career was a unique combination of academic brilliance, athletic success and an unyielding determination to improve.

2010 Doane Cross Country50

When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s fi rst private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of fi rst president David Brainerd Perry to the current 11th president, Jonathan Brand, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. Today, the college serves more than 3,200 students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Crete, Lincoln, and Grand Island, Neb., and focuses on providing an exceptional educational experience for all students. Doane College is one of only two schools in Nebraska to be ranked among the top 25 institutions in the Midwest and as one of the Midwest’s “best values” in the 2007 U.S. News & World Report College Guide. The Crete campus serves approximately 1,000 residential students on 300 scenic acres. Designated a state arboretum, the once treeless landscape now boasts more than 100 varieties of trees, numerous plantings, ponds, and swans. Doane College focuses on providing a student-centered, innovative environment for students and employees. Forty-plus major fi elds of study are offered, as well as pre-professional programs. More than 80 co-curricular activities and organizations are also available. From national championship athletic programs to music, theatre, and service clubs, students pursue many varied interests outside the classroom. Leadership development underscores the students’ experience in all aspects of the college. Doane’s unique Hansen Leadership Program works with students to help enhance their leadership skills and talents, through speakers and events, alumni mentors, course offerings, community service, and other activities. Additional highlights include the four-year graduation guarantee for students…graduate within four years or the college will pay for a fi fth year of course work. A travel scholarship for students provides opportunities to travel on college-sponsored trips in the U.S. or abroad. Doane College was the fi rst institution in the nation to initiate a warranty for its education graduates to hiring school districts, and guarantees teacher education graduates a position. Doane College also offers three graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Management (MAM), Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC), and Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership.

DOANE ACADEMICS

Media & Recruit Guide 53

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORTThe transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC).

In contrast to many students’ high school course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to substitute for required readings.

Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefi t of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and fi nals are all critical to any student’s academic success.

Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center.

The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance.

Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notifi cation of eligibility is sent to new students in the fi rst few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.

The Doane College athletic facilities continue to change and improve each year.

Simon Field was constructed in 1929 following a generous gift from G. Eli Simon, a Cambridge, Nebraska, attorney and father of a graduating senior. Simon Field is located on the north side of the campus and is home to the football and soccer teams. Lauritsen Track surrounds the fi eld and is home to the track & fi eld teams.

Field turf was installed in 2000. As part of the renovation, a new outdoor, polyurethane track was also installed. Both the fi eld and track are used by the Crete community and Crete High School. The press box was wired with Internet capabilities in the summer of 2004.

Located on the eastern end of campus, The Den is the alternate home to Doane soccer. The fi rst home of Doane Soccer, The Den is a grass surface used mostly for practices.

The George & Sally Haddix Center opened in Fall 2010 and is the home for Doane volleyball, basketball and dance/cheerleading. Now the center point between all athletic facilities, the Haddix Center also hosts the coaches’ offi ces, weight room and fi tness center. You can fi nd interactive computers in the front lobby that will introduce Doane Hall-of-Fame and Honor D receipents. Doane Athletic Club (DAC) memberships allow all members to utilize the weight room and fi tness center as well.

Located on the northeast end of the Doane campus, Fuhrer Field House is home to Tiger indoor track & fi eld. The Field House is also used for early season practices for baseball, softball, and tennis and will serve as an alternate practice facility for volleyball and basketball following the completion of the Haddix Center. The renovation of the athletic training room is the most recent improvement to the facility. Renovations are scheduled to increase the track size to 200 meters while redesigning the layout for tennis courts, batting cages and seating.

The Jose M. & Elizabeth Ledon Ballfi eld Complex opened in March 2007. The complex is located on the east end of campus and is home to Tiger baseball and softball. The facility includes batting cages, a two-story press box and concession stand.

Rick Schmuecker joined the Tiger team in August 2001 as Assistant Sports Information Director, following four years as a student at Midland Lutheran College. In May 2006, he was named head of the Sports Information Department by Athletic Director Greg Heier.

In Fall 2010, Dave Ziola became Assistant Sports Information Director. An assistant cross country and track & fi eld coach, Ziola will specialize in those two sports for the offi ce. He also teaches in the physical education department at Doane.
