Amendment & other ordering notes
• Editors define publication order independent of working group public timelines:– Since official timeline is volatile and moves around– Publication order helps provide stability in amendment numbering,
figures, clauses and other numbering assignments– Editors are committed to maintain a rational publication order
• Numbering spreadsheet 802.11-11/1149:– Succeeding amendments to do their respective updates– Must match the official timeline after plenaries

MIB style, Visio and Frame practices
• I’m going to suggest going forward we use a single style with appropriately set tabs, and use leading Tabs to distinguish the syntax and description parts. (Adrian Stephens Feb 9, 2010)
• Keep embedded figures using visio as long as possible– Near the end of sponsor ballot, turn these all into .wmf (windows
meta file) format files (you can do this from visio using “save as”). Keep separate files for the .vsd source and the .wmf file that is linked to from frame. There is likelihood we should use .emf
• Frame templates for 11aa, 11ac, 11af • Text version of MIB is available (2012, ae2012, aa2012,
ad2012, acD5.0, afD5.0. mcD3.0)Adrian Stephe

Work Completed• Architecture work
– Reviewed “Distribution System Access Facility” concept, as ‘upper part’ of an AP (between the STA and the DS)• Need similar understanding for mesh STAs, and various types of
‘relays’– Discussed proposal to make DS_SAP normative; move Annex R into a
main-body clause• Would be helpful to also show Portal to anything other than 802.3,
like 802.15.4 or 802.16• Annex Q also needs work to align terminology
– Discussed REVmc’s Figure 5-1, and clarifying the arrows in the role-specific following figures.
• MIB Design Pattern work item– Good concepts being discussed, but work is moving slowly– Consider a two-track approach, to provide specific guidance to TGs
actively doing amendments, and “boil the ocean” on a separate track

Work Completed (con’t)
• IETF/802 coordination update– No news
• Joint meeting with TGak, and 802.1– Discussed coordination of project dates between
802.11REV, 802.11ak, 802.1Qbz and 802.1AC– Concepts shared between 802.11REV and 802.1AC are
generally agreed and stable– Concepts shared between 802.11ak and 801.1AC are still
being formulated, and will be subject of joint discussions in January

Report
The SC discussed the outcomes of the SC6 meeting in London
• Thank you to the IEEE 802 delegation– Bruce Kraemer (HoD)– Adrian Stephens (HoD in training)– Stephen McCann– Jodi Haasz (IEEE staff)
• The SC6 agenda/attendance in London was very light– IEEE 802 provided updates under PSDO process– 802.22 WG allocated maintenance responsibility for 8802-22– No discussion on TePA or EUHT proposals ... are they finished?– Limited discussions on “Virtual AP” and “Optimization technology
in WLAN” … they will be dealt with in WG7 in teleconferences– SC6 will make a greater use of teleconferences in future

IEEE 802 wants to work with 3GPP to achieve consensus on 802.11/LAA sharing
• IEEE 802 would like the opportunity to review the 3GPP coexistence simulation studies related to LAA and 802.11 and provide feedback
• IEEE 802 would also like to review a range of documents throughout the period of the study item
• Examples of information that IEEE 802 is interested in reviewing include,– The SI schedule as it develops– Details of the fairness criteria – The simulation scenarios– The LBT related parameters– The simulation methodology– Other coexistence mechanisms for fair sharing
• Our goal is for IEEE 802 and 3GPP to build towards a consensus on the best way for LAA to fairly share the same spectrum with 802.11 systems

IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA is better suited to sharing unlicensed spectrum than TDMA-like systems
• CSMA/CA works in ISM bands (such as 2.4 and 5.8 GHz band) where there is uncontrolled energy in the band
• IEEE 802.11 attempted to use TDMA-like systems (PCF and HCCA), and they have failed in the marketplace for a variety of reasons– It is impractical to coordinate access between low-cost independent
systems, particularly for mobile devices moving across networks– The performance provided by CSMA/CA has proven by its wide
adoption in the marketplace to be good enough for the vast majority of use cases
• License-exempt wireless systems cannot rely on the guaranteed reception of radio management and control traffic

IEEE 802.16h: it is challenging to make scheduled systems, like 802.16h, compatible with 802.11 systems
• Note: Of all the 802 systems, 802.16h is the closest analog to LTE in unlicensed bands
• The time-synchronization requirements of 802.16h systems are incompatible with deployed 802.11 systems
• Coordination access required a high-cost high-speed control channel between 802.16h and 802.11 systems, which may be impractical
• Coordination of policy between 802.16h and multiple 802.11 systems is challenging since 802.11 systems are often independently managed
