2.4GHz is already overcrowded

• The 2.4 GHz band only has only 3 or 4 (depending on region) non-overlapping channels

• There are 11 channels in North America for the 2.4 GHz band. 3 non-overlapping channels are designed long before Wi-Fi and can support other wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth (5 MHz wide)

5GHz looks like good but might not enough

• 5 GHz band offers up to 21 separate channels (Originally 24 available channels in North America)

• Comparing to 2.4 GHz, 5GHz offers 7x more available channels.

• 802.11n and 802.11ac allow bonding of channels to get high data rates

• 802.11ac operate only in the 5GHz.

5GHz: Expansion and new comers

• FCC officially proposed to add up to 195 megahertz of additional spectrum in the 5 GHz band (a 35% increase) available to unlicensed wireless devices. 

• The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking would open up 195 MHz of additional spectrum at 5350-5470 MHz (120 MHz) and 5850-5925 (75 MHz), with the use of spectrum-sharing technologies.
