Alternative Assessment at QUEST:
QUEST Elementary is dedicated to assessing students
based on adequate levels of learning. With the
encouragement of highly trained professionals, QUEST
students explore curriculum and develop more than just
their education. The school is organized into four main
levels:
Kindergarten (years Pre-K through K)
Primary (traditionally grades 1&2)
Elementary (3&4)
Intermediate (5&6).
“Students are taught where they ought to be, not based on
grade level,” says Karen Spillman, Principal, QUEST
Elementary.
Spillman says that teachers at QUEST believe that
learning is a social process and students must be
challenged by their education, not bored.
What is Alternative Assessment?Multi-Level Learning
In this way, teachers provide curriculum for students
to explore at their own pace, providing families with
the support they need for their child’s success. Each
student develops his or her own goals and works
with parents and teachers throughout the learning
process. They share portfolios and hold conferences
to track progress and demonstrate independence and
responsibility for their own educational and social
development.
“Classes work together a lot within the same level,”
said one QUEST Student.
QUEST Elementary was developed by teachers,
growing into a local phenomenon. QUEST students
develop communities through learning and are not
given letter grades rather they earn performance-
based assessments that are collaboratively created.
“We are not a traditional school,” said Mackenzie Reed, Intermediate student, “We don’t sit in
desks and chairs and read text books all day.”
“We like to work at our own pace, individually
and with small groups,” – Loni Butlin (Above),
