2 Safety directions Never forget that even the safest pistol can be a danger to you and to others if not handled correctly. Before handling the pistol, first thoroughly familiarize yourself with its functions and handling procedures by carefully reading this technical information sheet. Always handle an unloaded pistol as if it were already loaded. Caution: Never forget to keep your finger off the trigger until you actually wish to fire a deliberate shot. Always hold the pistol in such a way that neither you nor bystanders are endangered. Never use force when operating, checking, stripping or assembling the pistol. Incorrect handling will impair the functioning and safety of the pistol. Safety and correct functioning are only assured while both the pistol and its ammunition are in technically perfect condition. Always have the pistol inspected by a qualified gunsmith if it has suffered from external influences, such as corrosion, being dropped, etc. Do not forget to wear ear protectors and safety glasses during practice shooting. Remind any persons in the vicinity that they should wear ear protectors.

3 Product description

3.1 Main features The WALTHER self-loading pistol P99 DAO has been developed using the latest knowledge for use by the police and other authorities. The automatic pistol P99 DAO works on the principle of the mechanically locked recoil loader. The P99 DAO is a striker fired (hammer-less) pistol offering the convenience of a modern Double Action Only trigger with linearly increasing trigger pull. The striker is inside the slide and has no external parts. A clearly visible advantage is the slim and rounded outward shape of the pistol without projecting parts. The ergonomic shape of the frame fits variably into the hand of the user. The easily interchangeable backstraps of varying size permit adjustment of the frame size to the needs of the user. The distance between the core axis of the barrel and the crook of the thumb has been reduced to a minimum. This considerably reduces the upward kick of the pistol when a shot is fired. This plays a major role in shortening the intervals between shots, since the extended line of sight can be quickly resumed. The P99 DAO has the following distinguishing features:

4 Technical description

4.1 General The pistol is in loaded, de-cocked and in automatically safetied condition. When the trigger is pulled back, the striker is released and the round is fired. The gas pressure resulting from this ignition propels the projectile out of the barrel. Some of the resultant gas pressure acts in the opposite direction on the breech face of the slide and causes a rearward movement of the barrel and slide. The joint rearward movement of the barrel and slide ends after 4 mm when the barrel swings downwards and the slide moves back to its stop alone, while the casing is ejected to the right. When the slide has reached its rear stop position, its rapid forward movement is initiated by the recoil spring. In this forward movement, a new round is drawn by the slide out of the magazine and fed into the chamber. During the slide movement the striker safety is activated. This prevents an inadvertent shot being fired when the slide is not completely closed.

4.2 Function description of the trigger assembly

4.2.1 General The trigger system features a generally familiar double action system (DAO - Double Action Only). The pistol is always in the de-cocked state and cannot be pre-cocked. Accordingly, no striking energy is stored in the trigger mechanism that might be released or that requires a de-cocking mechanism and hence additional controls. The trigger characteristics are identical for every shot. In the event of a misfire (dud round), pulling the trigger again permits further striking of the primer. The trigger assembly is enclosed by a trigger guard generously dimensioned on the inside, with a clear width in its front part of approx. 30 mm. It permits shooting without restriction while gloves are worn. The front part of the trigger guard affords optimum support for stabilizing the pistol for a rapidly aimed two-handed shot. The magazine catch, operable from either side and quick to reach, is integrated into the rear part of the trigger guard.

4.2.2 DAO trigger The pistol is in loaded, de-cocked and automatically safetied condition. When the trigger is pulled, first the trigger safety is de-activated. At the same time, the trigger bar is set in rearward motion. The striker, completely de-cocked at this moment, is now cocked. Immediately before the shot is fired, the function of the striker safety is de-activated, so that the striker springs forward and fires the round. Once the shot has been fired and the trigger returned, the striker safety locks the striker directly in front of the tip of the striker. The trigger safety and the drop safety also immediately come back into action. The striker is de-cocked again, meaning that there is no residual energy stored inside it. This ensures optimum safety for the user. To fire another shot, pull the trigger right back again from its rest position. This is done with a pleasantly rising trigger pull and unchanging trigger travel for every shot fired.

4.3 Safety features The P 99 DAO has three safety features acting automatically and independently of the pistol user: • Striker safety

Release of the striker travel when the trigger is pulled right back. • Trigger safety

Release immediately when the trigger is pulled. • Drop safeties

These safeties act when the pistol is dropped from a variety of heights and positions. They prevent inadvertent firing of a round.

4.4 Status indicators The loaded chamber indicator and cocking indicator considerably improve the safety.

4.4.1 Loaded chamber indicator The extractor recessed on the right-hand side shows that a round/casing is in the chamber when the pistol is loaded. The indicator is in the form of a coloured marking that is clearly visible to the eye (1). In addition, the extractor position can be clearly felt.

4.4.2 Cocking indicator The technical status (cocked/de-cocked) is shown by the rear and colour-coded end of the striker. In the de-cocked state, the end of the striker can be neither seen nor felt (2). When the trigger is pulled, the emerging end of the striker becomes clearly visible.

4.4.3 Magazine When the magazine is removed from the frame, the number of rounds can be seen from the holes provided laterally on both sides.

5 Handling the pistol

5.1 General Dry the barrel and de-oil the pistol before you fire a live round. Always point the muzzle of the pistol downwards and forwards when performing all actions with it. Keep your finger off the trigger, and instead stretched out above the trigger and along the side of the frame.

5.2 Ammunition Use only the ammunition officially issued to you.

5.3 Filling the magazine The magazine, once removed from the pistol, can be loaded with up to 15 rounds. Insert these rounds into the magazine in conventional fashion, with the projectile tip pointing in the direction of shooting. For easier loading of the magazine, the user is advised to hold down the rounds that are already in the magazine with his index finger or thumb to allow further rounds to be inserted (5.3 fig. 1). Do not use force, as this will cause damage to the magazine. Defective magazines cause malfunctions, making the pistol unserviceable. 5.3 fig. 1

5.4 Loading the pistol Hold the pistol in the basic position. Insert the loaded magazine into the pistol until the magazine catch engages. To do so, hold the pistol frame angled to the left (in the case of left-handers to the right), insert the magazine into the frame of the pistol with the non-shooting hand, and audibly engage it. Then return the pistol to the vertical position. With your free hand grip the grooved lateral surfaces of the slide with your thumb and index finger, pull the slide all the way back, and then let it spring forward (5.4 fig. 1). Do not guide the slide forward with your hand. Alternatively, when the slide is already opened, press one of the slide catches provided on either side downwards with the thumb of your shooting hand or with the thumb of your non-shooting hand. The slide springs forward by itself and chambers a round. After that the pistol is loaded, de-cocked and automatically safetied.

Caution: The pistol is ready to fire. Keep your finger off the trigger. The trigger finger stays above the trigger, stretched out along the side of the frame.

5.5 Shooting To do so, the pistol loaded as described under 5.4 is brought upwards onto the target. Once the target is in your sights, move your trigger finger to the trigger and pull it steadily with continually increasing force until the shot is fired. When the trigger is released (around 14 mm), further shots can be fired using the DAO trigger. The trigger should be pulled with the last joint of your index finger. Make sure the movement of the finger is transferred to the trigger in lengthways direction of the pistol. Doing so will de-activate the trigger safety to allow movement of the trigger.

5.6 The slide stop Once the last round has been fired, the slide is automatically held in the rear position.

5.7 The pistol with empty magazine The slide is in the rear setting. Operating the magazine catch, from either side, allows removal of the empty magazine and its replacement by a full one if required. After the magazine change, the slide stop lever provided on the left-hand and right-hand sides can be operated quickly and without complication. The slide springs forward and the pistol is ready to shoot again.

Caution: The pistol is ready to fire. Keep your finger off the trigger. The trigger finger stays above the trigger, stretched out along the side of the frame.

5.8 Unloading the pistol To unload, return the pistol to the basic position and turn it so that its frame is inclined to the left (to the right in the case of left-handers). Remove the magazine and put it away. Then angle the pistol frame to the right such that the ejection port, pointing left, can be covered with your non-shooting hand, and draw back the slide as far as it will go. As you do so, the chambered round slides into your cupped palm (the other way round for left-handers). This is followed by a deliberate visual check of the chamber. Only then is the slide released. While the user puts the pistol into the holster device, his thumb is inside the recess of the slide end cap.

5.9 Unloading the magazine To empty the magazine, hold the latter in your non-shooting hand with the rounds pointing upwards. Slide the rounds out forwards and singly with your shooting hand.

Never carry or keep loose rounds in pockets. Self-ignition is possible.

6 Care and maintenance of the pistol

6.1 Stripping the pistol

Remove the magazine and check that both the pistol and the magazine are unloaded.

The pistol can be stripped down without tools into its main components (slide, barrel and frame). The pistol must not be stripped down further than shown in this technical information sheet.

Remove the magazine and close the slide. Now grip the takedown catch from above on both sides and press downwards (6.1 fig. 1). Remove the slide forwards from the frame. Hold the slide with its sights downwards and the muzzle towards you. Now grip the recoil spring unit underneath the chamber and lift it upwards and out (6.1 fig. 2). Then remove the barrel.

6.2 Assembling the pistol Assembly is in the reverse order to stripping. Place the barrel inside the slide and fit the recoil spring unit. Firstly, place the smaller recoil spring end into the spring mounting of the slide, and secondly insert the large surface of the recoil spring into the lower barrel recess, against the spring pressure (6.2 fig. 1). 6.2 fig. 1 Push the slide from the front into the slide guides of the frame, far enough for the takedown catch to engage (6.2 fig. 2).

6.3 Cleaning the pistol Ensure every time before cleaning that the pistol and the magazines are unloaded and the chamber is clear.

To retain its operational safety and prolong its useful life, the pistol must be cleaned and cared for every time it has been used and also after being subjected to extreme weather conditions: - Strip the pistol into its main components - Clean the parts with the cleaning agents provided - Clean the barrel starting from the chamber side until the barrel is completely clean - Lightly oil the metal parts - Reassemble the pistol and check it for easy action and flawless operation

6.4 Function check

6.4.1 Checks before use Check that the pistol and the magazines are unloaded before a function check.

Function check: a) Remove the magazine, and pull the slide back as far as it will go. After the slide is

released, the recoil spring must bring the slide forwards into its rest position. b) Insert the empty magazine, and pull the slide back as far as it will go. The slide must be

held in this position by the slide stop lever. c) Take out the magazine and operate the slide catch. Allow the slide to spring forward. The

recoil spring must move the slide back into the rest position. d) Hold the pistol in the basic position. e) Pull the trigger. The striker must operate. f) Now release the trigger and then once again pull it right back. The striker must operate.

6.4.2 Check after use Make sure by a deliberate visual check that the pistol is unloaded after use (barrel and chamber empty) and the magazine is empty.

7 Adjusting the pistol to its user

7.1 Sights The rear sight and front sight are easy to change and the point of impact is vertically and laterally adjustable. The rear and front sights have contrast markings for rapid target acquisition. Polymer sights or steel sights are available. Lateral adjustment: If the shots group to the right, turn the rear sight windage screw clockwise, and if they group to the left counter-clockwise. Adjustment by one click moves the hit point some 2 cm over a 25 m distance from target. The drift adjustable steel rear sight may be adjusted using the rear sight installation tool. If shots group to the right move rear sight to the left, if they group to the left move rear sight to the right. Elevation correction: Using front sights of varying height corrects the elevation of the hit point. If the shots group low, use a lower front sight, for high grouping a higher one. The front sights are numbered. The higher the number, the higher the front sight. Each stage results in a correction of the hit point by about 5 cm. To change the front sight, remove the slide from the frame as described in 6.1 and remove the barrel. For polymer sights remove the front sight screw using the Allen key and press the front sight upwards and out. Assembly is in reverse order. For steel sights remove the front sight screw using a screw driver and press the front sight upwards and out. Assembly is in reverse order. Remember to make sure the screw and the tread inside the steel front sight are free of oil or grease. The thread of the front sight screw is to be secured using Loctite 648.

7.2 Frame To adjust the frame of the pistol optimally to the user's hand size, you can attach backstraps of differing size. To do so, press the pin in the bottom part of the backstrap out to the left or right using a drift and put it back in after the required backstrap has been fitted.

7.3 Eyelet The pin used to fasten the backstrap forms, together with a recess in the backstrap, an eyelet for attachment of a lanyard. To do so, press the pin in the bottom part of the backstrap out to the left or right using a drift and insert the lanyard. Then replace the pin.

8 Technical faults and their rectification Function faults usually have the following causes:

• Insufficient preparation of the weapon for shooting • Incorrect handling • Incorrect filling and insertion of the magazine • Faulty ammunition

Make a deliberate check before any troubleshooting measures that the pistol and the magazines are unloaded and that safety is assured.

Point muzzle in a safe direction. Remove the round after one minute, chamber a new round. If the round is still not fired, assure safety and perform a function check as per 6.4.1, if necessary have pistol repaired by gunsmith.
